BACKGROUND: We sought to assess the impact of bladder neck dose (BND) on patient reported urinary toxicity, and feasibility of relative urethral sparing technique in prostate brachytherapy (PB).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We retrospectively identified bladder neck as a point dose on post-implant CT scans in patients treated with 131Cs PB. Urinary symptoms were assessed through EPIC questionnaires. Patient cohorts were identified based on mean BND as a percentage of prescription dose with toxicity assessment at each time point.
RESULTS: In our cohort of 542 patients, BND was associated with clini

A 43-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man were referred separately from primary care to the urology service with short histories of frank haematuria. In both cases, histology from transurethral resection of their bladder tumours demonstrated the rare clear cell variant of urothelial/transitional cell carcinoma. Staging scans found the former patient had low-volume local disease, and the latter had locally advanced disease. The former patient went on to have partial cystectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection (with the endoscopic portion of the partial cystectomy undertaken by holmium:YAG laser

We report the imaging findings of a patient with Paget's disease in metastatic carcinoma bladder evaluated by Tc99m-Methylene diphosphonate (MDP) bone scintigraphy, F18-Fluoride positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and F18-fluorodeoxy glucose (FDG) PET/CT. Tc99m-MDP bone scan showed intense uptake in the skull bones without any other abnormal tracer distribution. F18-Fluoride PET/CT revealed intense uptake in the pelvic bones along with skull bones, but F18-FDG PET/CT showed intense multifocal FDG uptake in the bladder and bilateral inguinal lymph nodes, with no abnormal u

The utility of intraoperative frozen sections for determining ureteral and urethral margin status is controversial. In this study, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of frozen section diagnosis with the corresponding final tissue diagnosis in a series of 364 patients undergoing radical cystectomy for urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder. Multiple definitions of a positive diagnosis were analyzed. We then used clinical follow-up data to determine the effect of various frozen section diagnoses, frozen/permanent section discordance, and surgical margins on overall survival and di

The urinary tract likely plays a role in the development of various urinary diseases due to the recently recognized notion that urine is not sterile. In this mini review, we summarize the current literature regarding the urinary microbiome and mycobiome and its relationship to various urinary diseases. It has been recently discovered that the healthy urinary tract contains a host of microorganisms, creating a urinary microbiome. The relative abundance and type of bacteria varies, but generally, deviations in the standard microbiome are observed in individuals with urologic diseases, such as bl

From 1975 to 1990, we treated 118 patients with urinary epithelial cancer, including 100 with primary bladder cancer, 13 with primary upper urinary tract cancer, and 5 with both diseases. Thirty-five patients with primary bladder cancer underwent total cystectomy. Upper urinary tract urothelial cancer developed in 4 patients (4.0%) and was detected only after cystectomy. Three patients had multiple bladder tumors before cystectomy and recurrent tumors under long-term bladder-preserving treatment. The other patient had had cystectomy for the primary bladder lesion. Our present policy is to perf

Ultrasound is effective in evaluating pathologic entities in and around the urinary bladder. Abnormalities may be classified into 2 groups: lesions primarily affecting the bladder, including the bladder wall; and perivesical lesions, which secondarily affect the urinary tract. Intrinsic bladder diseases include inflammatory lesions, stones, and tumors, both primary and metastatic. Extrinsic perivesical abnormalities include lesions of the prostate, seminal vesicles, urethra, rectum, and perivesical soft tissues. Since the bladder is routinely visualized on pelvic ultrasonography, awareness and

INTRODUCTION: Plain x-rays and contrast urography are important for diagnosing urinary tract diseases. The first plain film of the urinary tract was made in 1896, and the first tests using contrasts started in 1904. Excretory urography has been used since 1930.
PLAIN FILM OF THE URINARY TRACT: Plain films of the urinary tract are used in the kidney area, the area of the ureter and urinary bladder. They also show structures (lumbar and sacral spine and pelvis), muscles (m. iliopsoas) as well as calculi.
EXCRETORY UROGRAPHY: X-ray visualization of the urinary tract with contrast substances is

Regeneration of the urinary bladder is a complicated task, due to organ dimensions and diseases (cancer, interstitial cystitis) when autologous bladder cells cannot be used. Cancer is the most frequent indication for bladder removal (cystectomy). Stem cells can be used with the guarantee of the sufficient cell number for the in vitro construction of the urinary bladder wall. Tissue engineering techniques hold great promise for regeneration of dysfunctional urinary sphincter. Denervation following surgical procedures or injuries results in weakness of the urethral sphincter and stress urinary i

OBJECTIVE: To explore imidafenacin's effects on bladder and cognitive function in neurologic overactive bladder (OAB) patients.
METHODS: Sixty-two subjects (25 men, 37 women; mean age 70 years (25-86) with OAB due to neurologic diseases) were enrolled in the study. We conducted a urinary symptom survey and cognitive tests (MMSE, FAB, ADAS-cog) in all patients. We performed urodynamics in 35 patients and measured real-time near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-urodynamics in eight patients before and after the administration of imidafenacin, an anticholinergic agent, for 3 months at 0.2 mg/day.

The objective of the study was to describe the ultrasonographic findings of urinary bladder urolithiasis and to determine the diagnostic value of the technique in feline lower urinary tract diseases (LUTD). Physical examination of the urinary system and routine clinicopathological analysis of the blood and urine were performed on 32 cats presented with clinical symptoms of LUTD. Cystosonography was done on all of the cats, while plain radiography was performed on 8 and double contrast cystography on 2 cats. Sonography of the bladder provided the following diagnoses: urolithiasis and chronic cy

The current management of diseases of urinary bladder requiring resection is by augmentation cystoplasty or transplantation of ureters. Transplantation of ureters is associated with morbidity and mortality. Ideal management will be by regenerating urinary bladder in vivo. Neo-regeneration of tissues and organs like abdominal wall, aponeurosis etc., has been attempted and patented. After neo-regeneration of mesoderm tissues and organs, regeneration of urinary bladder (developed from endoderm) was. In vivo surgical techniques were developed in dogs. It is known that the embryonic morphogenesis o

In most episodes of urinary tract infection bacteria reach the bladder through the urethra and then may ascend to the kidneys through the ureters. Bacteria periodically enter the female urinary bladder from the urethra in small numbers. Whether infection ensues depends on the virulence and inoculum size of the microorganism and the adequacy of most defense mechanisms. Human urine is frequently inhibitory and sometimes bactericidal for the bacteria that cause urinary tract infection. Inhibition of bacterial growth coupled with voiding serves as a very effective antibacterial defense mechanism.
