[Nonspecific pyelonephritis and the formation of urinary calculi in urogenital tuberculosis].

The course of urogenital tuberculosis is complicated by unspecific bacterial infections of the urinary tract and nephrolithiasis. Among 605 patients with bacteriological or histological verified urogenital tuberculosis, 122 patients (20%) developed unspecific bacterial urinary infection--commonly caused by E. coli, proteus and pseudomonas--and 57 patients (9.4%) showed nephrolithiasis. In 42% of the lithiasis patients an urinary tract infection simultaneously occurred. 22 calculi are analyzed by the combined crystal-optical and x-ray-diffraction method with following results: 9 X struvite/carb

A review of urinary calculi in children in the Bristol clinical area.

We have undertaken a detailed retrospective study of urinary calculi in the Bristol clinical area from 1950 to 1978. Most calculi in children are detected in the upper urinary tract and the majority are associated with urinary infection. There were two predominant aetiological groups. First the children under 5 years of age, usually male, with a Proteus infection and triple phosphate calculi of the staghorn type in the renal pelvis and calyces. Of the 7 children with a sterile urinary tract in this age group, 4 were discovered to have a metabolic cause for the their calculi. These included 2 p

Novel Methods of Determining Urinary Calculi Composition: Petrographic Thin Sectioning of Calculi and Nanoscale Flow Cytometry Urinalysis.

Accurate determination of urinary stone composition has significant bearing on understanding pathophysiology, choosing treatment modalities and preventing recurrence. A need exists for improved methods to determine stone composition. Urine of 31 patients with known renal calculi was examined with nanoscale flow cytometry and the calculi collected during surgery subsequently underwent petrographic thin sectioning with polarized and fluorescent microscopy. Fluorescently labeled bisphosphonate probes (Alendronate-fluorescein/Alendronate-Cy5) were developed for nanoscale flow cytometry to enumerat

Risk factors of calculi in upper urinary tract after radical cystectomy with urinary diversion.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The study was conducted to identify the risk factors of upper tract stone formation in patients with diversions after radical cystectomy (RC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with diversion after RC were collected in our center from January 2005 to December 2013. Three different common diversions were included: Orthotopic neobladder (ON: 168 patients), Ileal Conduit (IC: 93 patients) or Ureterocutaneostomy (UC: 104 patients). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis were conducted to identify the independent predictors of stone formation in t

Management of urinary tract calculi by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

From July 1989 to April 1993, Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL) was performed on 642 patients, of which 21 were from the pediatric age group. All treatments were done on a second generation lithotriptor-Siemens Lithostar, which does not require any modification for positioning of children. Fragmentation was achieved in all the patients (100%). A complete stone free rate was achieved in 17/21 patients (80.9%). Three (14.3%) patients had insignificant residual fragments whereas 1 (4.8%) had a residual fragment approximately 4 mm in size. 5640 shocks were required on an average. We have

Pathophysiological aspects of ureterorenoscopic management of upper urinary tract calculi.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Indications for ureterorenoscopy are expanding without hard scientific evidence to support its efficacy. Therefore, it is extremely important to focus on potential harmful effects of the procedure itself. This review explores how physiology of the upper urinary tract reacts to ureterorenoscopy, potentially translating into harmful effects, and how such pathophysiological processes may be minimized. RECENT FINDINGS: Complications to ureterorenoscopy and postoperative pain seem to be related to intrarenal pressure and/or access. Mean intrarenal pressures in the range of 60-10

Factors affecting urinary calculi treatment by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is still the treatment of choice for most renal and upper ureteric stones; however the outcome depends on multiple factors. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of stone density, as measured by Hounsfield Units (H.U) by non-contrast Computerized Tomography (CT), stone size and stone location on ESWL treatment outcome of urinary calculi in Jordanian patients. 65 patients underwent clinical, biochemical and radiological assessments followed by ESWL treatment. Statistical analyses including chi-square, analysis of variance (ANOVA)

Distribution and drug resistance of pathogens causing urinary tract infection in patients with urinary calculi.

OBJECTIVE: This study set out to clarify the distribution and drug resistance of pathogens causing urinary tract infection (UTI) in patients with urinary calculi. METHODS: Pathogens were isolated from urine samples of patients with urinary calculi also complicated with UTIs, during the period from 2015 to 2019, and the samples were cultured for drug sensitivity testing to study the drug resistance of pathogens. The results were analyzed by SPSS 22.0 software. RESULTS: Gram-negative bacteria were the main pathogens found in patients with urinary calculi complicated with UTI (84.52%). Escheric

Urinary calculi and pattern of fertility among women. A retrospective study.

The aim of this study is to reveal the relationship between urolithiasis and pattern of fertility among women as indicated by the age at first pregnancy, the number of pregnancies and the use of contraceptive pills as well as to determine the lateralization of stone. The study was conducted on 250 female patients suffering from urinary stones and a similar number of control randomly selected from the same hospital. Data were obtained by an interviewing questionnaire. The study demonstrated that the mean number of pregnancies of cases is significantly higher than that of control (t = 3.5797). H

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for the treatment of urinary calculi in the elderly.

Renal calculus in the elderly patient is associated with the same symptoms and risks as in other patient populations. With the recent development of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), many older patients can now be treated for renal calculi. The Department of Urology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has performed 107 ESWL treatments on a total of 96 patients over 70 years of age. This represents over 12% of all patients treated at our institution. No deaths related to ESWL treatment have occurred in this group, nor has increased morbidity been observed in comparison t

Incidence of struvite urinary calculi in two ancestral lines of beagles.

In the last 17 years, 55 of 2,125 (2.6%) purebred beagles maintained in a closed colony had urolithiasis. Males comprised 72.7% of the affected animals. All the uroliths except one set in the kidneys were in the urinary bladder, the urethra, or both. All uroliths were nearly pure magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate. Partially inbred beagles had a 10.7% incidence of urolithiasis, compared to a 2.0% incidence in an outbred line.

Recurrence rates of urinary calculi according to stone composition and morphology.

Few studies have examined the relative risk of recurrence of different stone types. The object of the present study was to evaluate the tendency for stone recurrence as a function of major mineral composition of the stones and morphological characteristics of the stones. This study was carried out using 38,274 stones for which we had data available to specify if the stone was from the first or a subsequent urinary stone episode. Stones were analyzed for morphology by stereomicroscope and for composition by infrared spectroscopy. Overall, 42.7% of stones were from patients who had had a previou

Urethral calculi: A rare cause of acute urinary retention in women.

Urinary retention is defined as the inability to void; frequently the patient is able to void partially, thus can not completely empty the bladder and diagnosed by increased post-void residual urine (PVR) volumes. It is usually seen in men, but a rare condition in women. The etiological factors may be neurological, anatomical, infectious or pharmacological. It can be encountered after gynecological or incontinence surgery. Urethral calculi associated with acute urinary retention in women is a very rare condition, because of the anatomic structure of female urethra. In this study, a case of acu
