Hepatozoon ursi n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Hepatozoidae) in Japanese black bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus).

Morphological and genetic features of a new Hepatozoon species, Hepatozoon ursi n. sp., in Japanese black bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) were studied. Schizogonic developmental stages were observed in the lungs of Japanese black bears. The schizonts were sub-spherical in shape and 45.7+/-4.6 x 42.7+/-4.5 microm in size. Each mature schizont contained approximately 80-130 merozoites and 0-5 residual bodies. The merozoites were 7.0+/-0.7 x 1.8+/-0.3 microm in size. Intraleukocytic gametocytes were slightly curved, cigar-like in shape and had a beak-like protrusion at one end. The size of the

Occurrence of Trichinella spp. infestations in black bears in Quebec, Canada.

Trichinella spp. are parasitic nematodes with a worldwide distribution that infect mammals, birds, and reptiles. Trichinella is composed of at least 13 taxa; the latest taxon, T13, was identified in wolverines in northwestern Canada in 2020. Trichinella is of public health importance because trichinellosis (trichinosis) is a zoonosis transmitted by eating undercooked meat from wild or domestic animals. In Canada, wild game species are the main source of infection; outbreaks in people originate almost exclusively from consumption of bear and walrus meat. Black bears (Ursus americanus), with a p

A review on ecological and physiological studies in bears from a One Health perspective.

The Hokkaido brown bear is the largest terrestrial mammal in the Hokkaido ecosystems and now inhabits almost all forests in Hokkaido, Japan. These bears have evolved through a unique shift from carnivorous to omnivorous feeding habits, which are of interest to their ecology. However, human-bear conflicts, such as human injury and crop or livestock damage, have become a serious concern, which requires ecological research for its mitigation. The hibernation behavior of bears has unique characteristics that differ from those of other small hibernators, including minimal decrease in body temperatu

Growth pattern analysis of the internal cranial structure in the male Hokkaido brown bear (Ursus arctos yesoensis) by computed tomography.

Forty male brown bear heads were non-destructively analyzed by computed tomography. Skull, frontal, and cranial cavity volumes were measured, and growth curves and regression lines were constructed. The morphological dynamics of the frontal sinus were also examined. Skull volume increased rapidly from 0 to 11 years of age, then grew more slowly until 21 years, when it plateaued. The frontal sinus also increased rapidly from 0 years, reaching approximately 300 mL by 10 years, after which growth ceased. The frontal sinus-to-skull ratio rose quickly from 0 to 4 years, then increased more graduall

Rosette-forming multicentric B-cell lymphoma in a giant panda.

Literature covering diseases of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is either in Chinese or focuses on infectious agents. Here we describe the clinical signs, gross and microscopic findings, and immunohistochemistry results of a B-cell lymphoma in multiple organs of a 35-y-old captive male giant panda. The animal was euthanized because of prolonged anorexia and vomiting. Postmortem examination revealed ascites, generalized lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, and thickened gall bladder mucosa. Histologically, the architecture of these organs was effaced by a densely cellular neopl

The unique gut microbiome of giant pandas involved in protein metabolism contributes to the host's dietary adaption to bamboo.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), a global symbol of conservation, are believed to be involved in the host's dietary switch to a fibrous bamboo diet. However, their exact roles are still largely unknown. RESULTS: In this study, we first comprehensively analyzed a large number of gut metagenomes giant pandas (n = 322), including 98 pandas sequenced in this study with deep sequencing (Illumina) and third-generation sequencing (nanopore). We reconstructed 408 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), and 148 of which (36.27%) were near complete. The most abun

An exploratory spatial contaminant assessment for polar bear (Ursus maritimus) liver, fat, and muscle from northern Canada.

Since the industrial era, chemicals have been ubiquitous in worldwide ecosystems. Despite the discontinued release of highly toxic persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the environment, the levels of some POPs are still being measured in the Canadian Arctic. These contaminants are of great concern due to their persistence, toxicity, and levels of bioaccumulation in food chains. Animals occupying top trophic positions in the Canadian Arctic, particularly polar bears, are exposed to these contaminants mainly through their diet. Our study investigated the levels of 30 metals (including total an

SEROLOGY AS A TOOL TO INVESTIGATE SARCOPTIC MANGE IN AMERICAN BLACK BEARS (URSUS AMERICANUS).

Black bears (Ursus americanus) have historically been considered an uncommon host for sarcoptic mange. However, over the last 25 yr, sarcoptic mange has been increasingly reported in black bears in the northeastern US. Syndromic monitoring is the most common surveillance approach for mange in bears, but tools to monitor exposure to Sarcoptes scabiei in bear populations have not been thoroughly evaluated under field conditions. In this study, we validated a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), designed to detect antibodies against S. scabiei in dogs, for use in blac

Tool-use in the brown bear (Ursus arctos).

This is the first report of tool-using behaviour in a wild brown bear (Ursus arctos). Whereas the use of tools is comparatively common among primates and has also been documented in several species of birds, fishes and invertebrates, tool-using behaviours have so far been observed in only four species of non-primate mammal. The observation was made and photographed while studying the behaviour of a subadult brown bear in south-eastern Alaska. The animal repeatedly picked up barnacle-encrusted rocks in shallow water, manipulated and re-oriented them in its forepaws, and used them to rub its nec

Spinal cord compression in two related Ursus arctos horribilis.

Two 15-yr-old grizzly bear littermates were evaluated within 9 mo of each other with the symptom of acute onset of progressive paraparesis and proprioceptive ataxia. The most significant clinical examination finding was pelvic limb paresis in both bears. Magnetic resonance examinations of both bears showed cranial thoracic spinal cord compression. The first bear had left-sided extradural, dorsolateral spinal cord compression at T3-T4. Vertebral canal stenosis was also observed at T2-T3. Images of the second bear showed lateral spinal cord compression from T2-T3 to T4-T5. Intervertebral disk di

Adaptation of the hindlimbs for climbing in bears.

The hindlimbs of the Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), the polar bear (Ursus maritimus), the brown bear (Ursus arctos) and the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) have been anatomically and osteometrically studied. The Musculus tibialis cranialis of the Malayan sun bear and the giant panda possessed a well-developed rich fleshy portion until the distal end of the tibia. In the polar bear and the brown bear, however, the fleshy portion of the M. tibialis cranialis was not developed until the distal end of the tibia. The tendon of the M. tibialis cranialis inserting on the proximal end of

Acute gastric dilatation and volvulus in a free-living polar bear.

A large, adult male polar bear (Ursus maritimus) was found dead on a barrier island north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska (USA), in June 1987. There were no external signs of trauma. A twisted distended stomach, distinctive parenchymal and fascial congestion, and significant difficulty in repositioning the anterior abdominal organs, indicated that gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) was the proximate cause of death. Polar bears frequently consume large quantities of food at one time and have large stomachs that are well adapted to periodic gorging. The scarcity of food in winter and early spring, combine

SARS-COV-2 Vaccination Response in Non-Domestic Species Housed at the Toronto Zoo.

Background: Due to the wide host range of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), vaccination has been recommended for susceptible species in zoological collections, particularly to protect endangered species. The Zoetis® Experimental Mink Coronavirus Vaccine (Subunit) was temporarily authorized in 2021-2024 for emergency use in North America for this purpose. However, there are limited data regarding its safety or efficacy in non-domestic mammals. The present study was conducted to assess the ability of this vaccine to elicit serum neutralizing titers against SARS-Co

General introduction and epidemiology of trichinellosis.

All studies on trichinellosis have been based on the assumption that there is only one cosmopolitan agent of human and animal trichinellosis; Trichinella spiralis (Owen, 1835). In the past, swine and only a few synanthropic animals were considered reservoirs, and the presence of the parasite in sylvatic animals was considered rare. Breeding experiments before, and then biochemical approaches (isoenzymes and DNA analysis), showed the presence of a high genetic variability inside this genus, suggesting it be considered as polyspecific. At present, eight gene pools, named from T1 to T8, have been

Melatonin suppresses the seasonal estrus in female giant pandas.

In mammals, the pineal gland secretes melatonin, which serves as a crucial signal for interpreting photoperiod cues. As a seasonal breeder, the giant panda typically mates during the spring. To fully elucidate melatonin's influence on the seasonal estrus of female giant pandas, we conducted an in-depth analysis of urinary hormones. First, we found that urinary melatonin and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) levels exhibit distinct seasonal variations over the annual cycle. From January to April, melatonin levels decline sharply from their annual peak, while GnRH levels rise rapidly and rem

Hibernation and plasma lipids in free-ranging brown bears-implications for diabetes.

Brown bears (Ursus arctos) prepare for winter by overeating and increasing adipose stores, before hibernating for up to six months without eating, drinking, and with minimal movement. In spring, the bears exit the den without any damage to organs or physiology. Recent clinical research has shown that specific lipids and lipid profiles are of special interest for diseases such as diabetes type 1 and 2. Furthermore, rodent experiments show that lipids such as sulfatide protects rodents against diabetes. As free-ranging bears experience fat accumulation and month-long physical inactivity without

Performance evaluation of E-nose and E-tongue combined with machine learning for qualitative and quantitative assessment of bear bile powder.

Bear bile powder (BBP) is a valuable animal-derived product with a huge adulteration problem on market. It is a crucially important task to identify BBP and its counterfeit. Electronic sensory technologies are the inheritance and development of traditional empirical identification. Considering that each drug has its own specific odor and taste characteristics, electronic tongue (E-tongue), electronic nose (E-nose) and GC-MS were used to evaluate the aroma and taste of BBP and its common counterfeit. Two active components of BBP, namely tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) and taurochenodeoxycholi

Chronic kidney disease in a giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in captive wildlife species. However, CKD has been rarely documented in giant pandas. CASE PRESENTATION: The following report describes a case of an eight-year-old female giant panda showing clinical signs of epistaxis, bloody diarrhea, polyuria, azotemia and anemia. The animal died despite of supportive treatments. Necropsy was performed. Grossly, both kidneys were shrunken and scarred with pallor. Subcutis edema and petechia on the epicardium of the heart were observed. The tissue samples were made into pa
