Clinical applications of penetrating neural interfaces and Utah Electrode Array technologies.

This paper briefly describes some of the recent progress in the development of penetrating microelectrode arrays and highlights the use of two of these devices, Utah electrode arrays and Utah slanted electrode arrays, in two therapeutic interventions: recording volitional skeletal motor commands from the central nervous system, and recording motor commands and evoking somatosensory percepts in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The paper also briefly explores other potential sites for microelectrode array interventions that could be profitably pursued and that could have important consequenc

Increasing incidence of invasive Haemophilus influenzae disease in adults, Utah, USA.

Since the introduction of the Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine, the incidence of invasive H. influenzae type b disease among children has fallen dramatically, but the effect on invasive H. influenzae disease among adults may be more complex. In this population-based study we examined the epidemiology and outcomes of invasive disease caused by typeable and nontypeable H. influenzae among Utah adults during 1998-2008. The overall incidence increased over the study period from 0.14/100,000 person-years in 1998 to 1.61/100,000 person-years in 2008. The average incidence in persons >65 years o

Associations between breast cancer risk factors and religious practices in Utah.

BACKGROUND: Utah has the lowest female malignant breast cancer incidence rates in the United States, due in part to low rates among women who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon). Several established reproductive and non-reproductive breast cancer risk factors may be lower among LDS women because of their religious doctrine related to marriage, family, and health. This paper investigates the association between selected breast cancer risk factors and religious preference and religiosity in Utah. METHODS: A 37-item anonymous cross-sectional telephone s

The Utah Protocol for Postmortem Eye Phenotyping and Molecular Biochemical Analysis.

PURPOSE: Current understanding of local disease pathophysiology in AMD is limited. Analysis of the human disease-affected tissue is most informative, as gene expression, expressed quantitative trait loci, microenvironmental, and epigenetic changes can be tissue, cell type, and location specific. Development of a novel translational treatment and prevention strategies particularly for earlier forms of AMD are needed, although access to human ocular tissue analysis is challenging. We present a standardized protocol to study rapidly processed postmortem donor eyes for molecular biochemical and ge

Familial clustering of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in the Utah population.

BACKGROUND: The main purpose of the current study was to define the familial aggregation of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and risk to relatives of patients with oropharyngeal SCC. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study utilizing linked population-based genealogy and state cancer registry databases between 1966 and 2012. Relative risks for oropharyngeal SCC and other malignancies among patients with oropharyngeal SCC and their relatives were estimated. RESULTS: Significant excess pairwise relatedness was observed for oropharyngeal SCC diagnosed before age 65 years. Signific

A quality assessment of reporting sources for microcephaly in Utah, 2003 to 2013.

BACKGROUND: Obtaining accurate microcephaly prevalence is important given the recent association between microcephaly and Zika virus. Assessing the quality of data sources can guide surveillance programs as they focus their data collection efforts. The Utah Birth Defect Network (UBDN) has monitored microcephaly by data sources since 2003. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of reporting sources for microcephaly surveillance. METHODS: All reported cases of microcephaly among Utah mothers from 2003 to 2013 were clinically reviewed and confirmed. The UBDN database was linked to

Bacteria and nematodes in the conjunctiva of mule deer from Wyoming and Utah.

Swabs of conjunctiva were collected from 44 live and 226 hunter-harvested mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Wyoming and Utah (USA). We identified 29 gram negative and 22 gram positive bacterial taxonomic categories, but many isolates from hunter-harvested animals were environmental contaminants. Staphylococcus spp. and Micrococcus spp. were the most common gram positive bacteria isolated, and Enterobacter spp., Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. were common gram negative bacteria isolated. Thelazia californiensis were found in 15% of hunter-harvested deer in Utah in 1994 and in 8% in 19

Cancer pain management: pilot implementation of the AHCPR guideline in Utah.

BACKGROUND: Using the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research's (AHCPR's) 1994 Clinical Practice Guideline for Management of Cancer Pain, HealthInsight, the peer review organization for Utah and Nevada, organized a cooperative project with physicians and nurses from seven acute care hospitals in Utah. The project's purpose was to adapt the guideline into action plans for participating hospitals and provide the tools necessary to address six "core" guidelines-to assess and relieve pain, educate the patient/family and health care workers, measure patient satisfaction, and provide a continuum

Trichomoniasis as a factor in mourning dove population decline in Fillmore, Utah.

We examined whether trichomoniasis had been a factor in a dramatic mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) population decline in Fillmore, Utah (USA). We reasoned that if we could not find a high proportion of doves showing clinical signs of disease then the population was not being affected. Prevalences of Trichomonas gallinae in doves were 21% for 1992 and 14% for 1993. We also examined 230 birds and found only one with oral lesions. These prevalences were similar to those observed at the same study site in the 1950's, or reported elsewhere. Based on our results, we believe that trichomoniasis was

Mortality Patterns Among Utah Firefighters, 2001-2024: A Proportionate Mortality Study.

OBJECTIVE: Firefighters face exposures linked to chronic disease and suicide. This study evaluated cause-specific mortality among Utah firefighters versus other occupations. METHODS: Utah death certificates (2001-2024) were analyzed using 2018 Census codes and NCHS causes. We estimated adjusted proportionate mortality odds ratios (aORs) for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and suicide. RESULTS: Analysis included 734 firefighter deaths and 366,952 others. After adjusting for demographics and tobacco use, firefighters had significantly higher odds for suicide (aOR 1.59; 95% CI 1.09-2.34). No s

Lobular breast cancer: excess familiality observed in the Utah Population Database.

Family history of breast cancer (BC) is a strong predictor for developing female BC. Whether this excess familiality differs within morphological BC subgroups remains unclear. We assessed the risk of lobular breast cancer (LOB) and any BC among relatives of probands with LOB. We used the Utah Population Database (UPDB) to estimate familial relative risks (FRR) as well as average relatedness, using the genealogical index of familiality (GIF) statistic. The UPDB, a population-based resource, links genealogical data from over 2 million individuals to the Utah Cancer Registry. Consistent with othe

Submersion injuries in children younger than 5 years in urban Utah.

Submersion injuries of children younger than 5 years in 4 urban Utah counties from 1984 through 1988 were studied retrospectively to identify associated risk factors. Infants younger than 1 year had the highest rates of both submersion injuries and deaths. The incidence of bathtub drownings was 2 to 3 times higher than reported national rates. All bathtub drownings occurred while the victim was bathing with a young sibling (10 months to 7 years of age) without adult supervision. All drownings in pools and moving bodies of water (rivers, irrigation ditches) resulted from unintentional falls int

High-resolution modeling of indoor radon exposure with uncertainty quantification in Utah.

Indoor radon accounts for 37% of population-level exposure to ionizing radiation in the United States. However, radon metrics are typically reported at coarse spatial scales, potentially obscuring meaningful local variation. We developed a high-resolution modeling framework to estimate indoor radon concentrations across Utah while explicitly quantifying predictive uncertainty. A total of 19,497 residential radon measurements collected between 2006 and 2017 were combined with environmental and housing characteristics and analyzed using a geospatial neural network that accommodates spatial depen

Probable African tick bite fever identified during preoperative evaluation in Central Utah.

African tick bite fever (ATBF) is a spotted fever group rickettsiosis caused by Rickettsia africae and is often identified among travelers returning from sub-Saharan Africa. Clinical presentation may be mild or nonspecific, often delaying diagnosis despite characteristic findings such as inoculation eschars. A 52-year-old male presented to the preoperative holding area prior to a scheduled left-sided inguinal hernia repair after recently returning from a game-hunting trip to Africa. During preoperative intake, he was noted to have a fever of 106 °F despite being otherwise asymptomatic. Physica

Dientamoeba fragilis cases identified by molecular detection, Utah, United States, 2014-2024.

Dientamoeba fragilis (D. fragilis) is an intestinal protozoan parasite with uncertain pathogenic potential. In the United States, data on D. fragilis in the era of molecular detection are limited. The aim of this retrospective chart review was to evaluate the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of D. fragilis cases identified using polymerase chain reaction assays between 2016 and 2024 at our academic medical centre located in Utah. We identified 28 unique cases with varying gastrointestinal symptomatology including diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and bloating. Approximately
