The 2025 Cure Ocular Melanoma (CURE OM) Global Science Meeting took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on October 25th, 2025. Several promising drug candidates are in development; however, there is still an urgent need for better prevention, detection, and treatment of uveal melanoma. The purpose of this meeting was to promote international collaboration and idea exchange between scientists, industry, and patient advocates.

OBJECTIVES: Almost half of all patients diagnosed with uveal melanoma will die of metastatic disease. This has been attributed to early seeding of micrometastases. We investigate the presence, density, organ involvement, and characteristics of micrometastases of uveal melanoma in tissue obtained at autopsy of patients with and without coexisting macrometastases.

BACKGROUND: Uveal melanoma is a rare form of cancer with high mortality. The incidence of metastases is attributed to early seeding of micrometastases from the eye to distant organs, primarily the liver. Once these seeded clusters of dormant tumor cells grow into larger radiologically detectable macrometastases, median patient survival is about 1 year. Melatonin is an important hormone for synchronizing circadian rhythms. It is also involved in other aspects of human physiology and may offer therapeutic benefits for a variety of diseases including cancer.

Stereotactic radiosurgery using the Leksell Gamma Knife has proven to be a valuable alternative to orbital enucleation or fractionated radiation therapy for primary tumors of the orbit, metastatic tumors to the choroid, and primary uveal melanomas. Currently, histopathologic examination of specimens is the gold standard for the diagnosis and categorization of melanoma. Primary or secondary orbital melanomas are extremely rare tumors; they represent less than 1% of primary orbital neoplasms.
