Susceptibility of medical students to vaccine-preventable viral diseases: a serological study.

As a measure for the prevention and control of nosocomial infections in medical school students, we examined the students' titers of antibodies to measles, rubella, varicella, and mumps viruses to determine whether vaccination was required. We also analyzed and discussed correlations among antibody titers to the viruses. Subjects were 363 Juntendo University students, ranging from freshmen to seniors. EIA was used to measure IgG antibody titers. Eight subjects (2.2%) had negative titers for measles, 36 (9.9%) for rubella, 8 (2.2%) for varicella, and 10 (2.7%) for mumps. Seronegative subjects w

Notifications of vaccine preventable diseases in Australia. Quarterly report (January-March 2000).

Vaccine preventable disease notifications for Australia with disease onset dates between January and March 2000 are reviewed. During this quarter, numbers of notifications for Haemophilus influenzae type b disease and measles were the lowest ever recorded, while those for rubella were the lowest recorded since before the epidemic of spring 1992. These are promising trends that are likely to represent a true reduction in disease incidence. Numbers of pertussis notifications declined compared with the last quarter of 1999, but remain high, making up 88% of notifications for the vaccine preventab

Serostatus for vaccine-preventable diseases in residents at Melbourne Juvenile Justice Centre.

There are concerns in Australia about inadequate rates of childhood immunisation, an important preventive measure to reduce infectious diseases. The population passing through the Melbourne Juvenile Justice Centre (MJJC) comes from a background at high risk for inadequate immunisation and outbreaks can occur in residential institutions. MJJC residents were invited to participate in a study by completing a medical officer-administered risk behaviour questionnaire and/or giving a blood sample. Ninety residents completed the questionnaire; 83 gave blood samples. Sera were tested for measles, mump

Developing community-based surveillance systems for vaccine-preventable diseases: lessons learned from Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Routine immunization was severely disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) in Indonesia. While community-based surveillance (CBS) was instrumental in COVID-19 detection, its role in VPD monitoring remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study explores practices, challenges, and future opportunities to develop a CBS for vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). METHODS: We applied a convergent mixed-method study in Sleman regency, Indonesia. We interviewed 41 stakeholders - health staff, community health volunteers (CHVs), and comm

Risk of vaccine preventable diseases in UK migrants: A serosurvey and concordance analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) such as measles and rubella cause significant morbidity and mortality globally every year. The World Health Organization (WHO), reported vaccine coverage for both measles and rubella to be 71 % in 2019, indicating an immunity gap. Migrants in the EU/EEA may be at high risk of VPDs due to under-immunisation and poor living conditions. However, there are limited data on VPD seroprotection rates amongst migrants living in the United Kingdom (UK). METHODS: We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional serosurvey amongst a sample of adult migrants livi

Seroprevalence of vaccine-preventable diseases among young children in the United Arab Emirates.

OBJECTIVES: In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), many vaccine-preventable diseases are notifiable and are often reported despite high estimated immunization coverage. The serological assessment of immunity against these infections (serosurveillance) complements disease surveillance (notification). This study aimed to assess the yet unmeasured serological immunities to nine vaccine-preventable infections among vaccinated Emirati children. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved children who attended the Well-Child Care Programme of the Ambulatory Healthcare Services (Al-Ain, UAE) between Ju

Summary of National Surveillance Data on Vaccine Preventable Diseases in Australia, 2008-2011.

This summary report on vaccine preventable diseases in Australia brings together the 3 most important national sources of routinely collected data on vaccine preventable diseases (notifications, hospitalisations and deaths) for all age groups for the period January 2008 to December 2011. The general trend towards improved control of disease is evident, particularly in the childhood years. Detailed results are available in 16 individual chapters. Although these data have limitations, which are discussed in detail in the body of the report, some clear trends are evident. Compared with the previo

The spread of vaccine-preventable diseases by international travellers: a public-health concern.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) are costly at both the individual and societal levels. The most common VPDs recorded in travellers are enteric (typhoid or paratyphoid B) fever, acute viral hepatitis, influenza, varicella, measles, pertussis and bacterial meningitis. Travellers suffering from VPDs are frequently hospitalized, illustrating the point that VPDs are serious and expensive. Many travellers are not properly immunized before travel. In addition to individual consequences, VPDs can have public-health consequences if they are introduced or re-introduced by infected travellers returni

My continuing efforts toward the eradication of the vaccine-preventable diseases from Japan.

When compared to the Western countries, unfortunately, the progress toward the eradication of vaccine-preventable diseases in Japan has been relatively slow and hampered by some problems inherent to Japan. Concerning this, I have been working on the vaccine-preventable diseases, that is, measles, influenza, Haemophilus influenzae, and Streptcoccus pneumoniae infections. My first work was to produce monoclonal antibodies against measles virus proteins, and by using these antibodies, I established the immunofluorescent measles virus detection system in tissue samples. I constructed the 'Hokkaido

Age-dependent branching processes for surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases with incubation period.

The purpose of this paper is to review the recent results of the authors in the area of infectious disease modeling by means of branching stochastic processes. This is a new approach involving age-dependent branching models, which turned out to be more appropriate and flexible for describing the spread of an infection in a given population, than discrete time ones. Concretely, Bellman-Harris and Sevast'yanov's branching processes are investigated. It is justified that the proposed models are proper candidates as models of infectious diseases with incubation period like measles, mumps, avian fl

Vaccine preventable diseases in returned international travelers: results from the GeoSentinel Surveillance Network.

Vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) threaten international travelers, but little is known about their epidemiology in this group. We analyzed records of 37,542 ill returned travelers entered into the GeoSentinel Surveillance Network database. Among 580 (1.5%) with VPDs, common diagnoses included enteric fever (n=276), acute viral hepatitis (n=148), and influenza (n=70). Factors associated with S. typhi included VFR travel (p<0.016) to South Central Asia (p<0.001). Business travel was associated with influenza (p<0.001), and longer travel with hepatitis A virus (p=0.02). 29% of those with VPDs

Lack of serologic immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases in children after thoracic transplantation.

We investigated whether children after heart- (HTx) or heart-lung transplantation (HLTx) show protective antibody levels against recommended vaccinations, whether vaccination schedules are completed and which factors influence serologic immunity. We performed a cross sectional ELISA - quantification of specific antibodies in 46 patients after pediatric thoracic Tx. Findings were correlated to vaccination history, age at Tx, clinical course and immunosuppressive regimen. We found protective antibody levels against diphtheria in 74% of patients, against tetanus in 22%, against Haemophilus influe

[Seroepidemiological surveys of non vaccine-preventable diseases and their interest in public health].

Seroepidemiological surveys are epidemiological studies carried out by the use of serum tests to detect infection; they can be applied to infections in general and to vaccine-preventable diseases in particular. Among other applications, seroepidemiological studies are useful for determining groups at risk for a specific disease; evaluating transmission mechanisms; and determining population groups who are critical in maintaining the transmission of infectious agents. We analysed the results of seroprevalence studies in Spain on vertically-transmitted non vaccine-preventable diseases (Toxoplasm

Extent of occurrence of the six vaccine preventable diseases in vaccinated/unvaccinated children.

Sixty two children who were diagnosed to be suffering from any of the six vaccine preventable diseases were studied to know their vaccination status prior to the occurrence of these diseases. A total of 33.9% of these children had developed these diseases inspite of full immunization. Nearly 75% of immunized children had received the vaccine from Government sources. The break-up diseases among the children studied was tetanus (35.5%), poliomyelitis and pulmonary tuberculosis (22.6% each), measles (11.3%), diphtheria (6.4%) and pertussis (1.6%). The vaccinated children who developed poliomyelit

Global burden and time trends of vaccine-preventable diseases in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) are a major global health concern for children and adolescents. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated VPDs prevention by halting vaccinations in many areas. This study aimed to analyze the global burden and trends of eight high - burden VPDs in 0 - 19 - year - olds from 1990 to 2021. METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 database across 204 countries, incidence and DALYs were stratified by age, sex, and SDI. A linear regression model calculated AAPCs, and a joinpoint regression model identified a significant trend - chan

Burden of vaccine-preventable diseases among at-risk adult populations in the US.

Life-course immunization holds significant benefit for population health by reducing the burden of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) through vaccinating individuals at different stages and circumstances in life. The study aimed to determine the epidemiologic, clinical, economic, and societal burden of VPDs among at-risk adult subpopulations in the United States. A systematic literature review was conducted for articles published between January 2010 and June 2020, which identified 72 publications. There was heterogeneity in available epidemiology data, with the prevalence of VPDs ranging from
