Douching and sexually transmitted diseases in pregnant women in Surabaya, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to investigate the association between douching (douching agents and timing) and sexually transmitted disease. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey of sexually transmitted diseases and habits of vaginal douching was performed on 599 pregnant women who visited a prenatal clinic in Surabaya, Indonesia. RESULTS: Of the 599 pregnant women, 115 (19.2%) had at least one sexually transmitted disease (gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, trichomoniasis, or herpes simplex virus-2). Most women had douched with water (19%) or water and soap (63%) at least once in the preceding m

Vaginal laceration from a high-pressure water jet in a prepubescent girl.

OBJECTIVE: To document an unusual case of water douche injury in a prepubescent girl. DESIGN: Case report. RESULTS: After sitting atop a high-pressure water jet in a public fountain, a 9-year-old girl experienced pain and vaginal bleeding. She sustained a laceration high in her vaginal vault with an estimated total blood loss of 750 mL. Examination and vaginal packing were done under general anesthesia resulting in cessation of bleeding. CONCLUSIONS: High-pressure water douche is recognized as producing serious vaginal injury in adult women but is not well reported as a cause of genital tra

Douching, pelvic inflammatory disease, and incident gonococcal and chlamydial genital infection in a cohort of high-risk women.

Douching has been linked to gonococcal or chlamydial cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in retrospective studies. The authors conducted a 1999-2004 prospective observational study of 1,199 US women who were at high risk of acquiring chlamydia and were followed for up to 4 years. Cervical Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis were detected from vaginal swabs by nucleic acid amplification. PID was characterized by histologic endometritis or pelvic pain and tenderness plus one of the following: oral temperature >38.3 degrees C, leukorrhea or mucopus, erythrocyte sedimentat

Consideration of Cultural Practices When Characterizing the Vaginal Microbiota Among African and African American Women.

This manuscript considers intravaginal practices prevalent among African and African-American women, with the aim of providing a framework for how these practices may affect vaginal health and the vaginal microbiota, and consequently, impact pregnancy outcomes. Intravaginal practices are influenced by traditional socio-cultural beliefs and gender norms, with prominent practices including intravaginal insertion of substances (herbs and traditional medicines), intravaginal cleansing (douching), and anatomical modification of the female organs (labia elongation and female genital mutilation). Isolation of non-albicans Candida and associated factors among symptomatic women presenting with abnormal vaginal discharge at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, Central Uganda: A cross-sectional study.

Vulvovaginal infections contribute substantially to women's reproductive morbidity, yet little is known about the determinants of non-albicans Candida (NAC) in sub-Saharan Africa. Understanding population-level drivers is critical for prevention and control. We conducted a hospital-based analytic cross-sectional study among 314 symptomatic women aged 18-49 years presenting with abnormal vaginal discharge at the gynecologic clinic of Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, Central Uganda, between 1st May 2025 and 1st August 2025. High vaginal swabs were cultured and species identified using CHROM a

The association between vaginal hygiene practices and spontaneous preterm birth: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB) is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide and defining its risk factors is necessary to reduce its prevalence. Recent studies have pointed out that bacterial vaginosis, a disturbance in the vaginal microbiome, is associated with SPTB. It is hypothesized that vaginal hygiene practices can alter the vaginal microbiome and are therefore associated with SPTB, but there are no studies investigating this matter. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A case-control study was conducted between August 2018 and July 2021 in two affiliated university med

Effect of Vaginal Washing before Intravaginal Prostaglandin Insertion on Induction of Labor: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

OBJECTIVE: Saline vaginal douching prior to intravaginal prostaglandin application might increase the vaginal pH, leading to improvement of prostaglandin bioavailability, by which the outcomes of labor induction can be greatly improved. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effect of vaginal washing with normal saline before insertion of vaginal prostaglandin for labor induction. STUDY DESIGN: A systematic search was done in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science from inception to March 2022. We selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared vaginal washing using normal

Beyond douching: use of feminine hygiene products and STI risk among young women.

INTRODUCTION: Use of feminine hygiene products (feminine wipes, sprays, douches, and yeast creams) by adolescent women is common, yet understudied. AIM: We examine the association among these genital hygiene behaviors, condom use, and sexually transmitted infection (STI). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Using the interview as our unit of analysis, we examined associations between genital hygiene behaviors (use of feminine wipes, feminine sprays, douches, or yeast creams), STI risk factors, and infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas vaginalis. METHODS: We recruit

Air embolism due to pulmonary barotrauma in a patient undergoing cesarean section.

Air embolism may occur following criminal abortion, vaginal douching, powder insufflation as treatment for vaginal infections, and orogenital sex. The patient reported in this work deteriorated following pulmonary barotrauma. Diagnosis was made 16 h after the appearance of neurological signs. She was transferred immediately to the hyperbaric unit. The speed and completeness of recovery are directly related to the prompt diagnosis and commencement of therapy. Failure is more likely related to delay.

Mixed Vaginal Infections and Their Predictors Among Women With Abnormal Vaginal Discharges Attending Gynecological Clinics in Western Uganda: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Mixed vaginal infection involves the simultaneous presence of at least two types of vaginitis, including bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), BV and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), or TV and VVC. This condition disrupts the vaginal milieu, resulting in significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, recurrent infections, and increased antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to assess the mixed vaginal infections and their predictors among women with abnormal vaginal discharges attending gynecological clinics in western Uganda. Methods: A cross-sectional st

Self treatment options for gynecological issues.

Gynecological issues such as itching, discharge, burning, or dryness are common reasons for seeking medical attention. However, with the wide availability of over-the-counter medications, self-treatment is becoming increasingly relevant. This review article summarizes the most frequent vaginal complaints - vaginal candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, aerobic vaginitis, mucosal dryness, and genital herpes - and outlines treatment options available within the scope of pharmaceutical care. It highlights the pharmacist's role in educating patients, recommending appropriate therapies, and identifying

Bacterial vaginosis, vaginal Candida colonization and antifungal susceptibility patterns in pregnant women of eastern Ethiopia: a prospective study.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) and vaginal candidiasis are prominent causes of vaginal infections, leading to discomfort and negative pregnancy outcomes. Despite their significance, there is limited data on the prevalence, progression, and contributing factors of BV and vaginal Candida colonization among pregnant women in low-resource settings such as Ethiopia. Thus, the aim of this paper is to determine the prevalence and associated factors of BV and vaginal Candida colonization, and antifungal susceptibility patterns in Eastern Ethiopia. Exploratively, we assessed the relationship between these in

Epidemiology of cancer of the cervix in Buffalo, New York.

An investigation was done to determine whether patients with cancer of the cervix from Buffalo and Kenmore, New York, differed from a random sample of women from the same communities on a variety of parameters associated with marital and reproductive history. A comparison of the 285 patients and 1,620 controls showed that patients were more likely than controls to have been black and non-Jewish, to have married young, to have had more than one husband, and to have been young at the time of their first pregnancy. In addition, they were more likely to have frequently used the vaginal douche and

Maintaining vulvar, vaginal and perineal health: Clinical considerations.

Knowledge of female genital anatomy and physiology is often inadequate or incorrect among women. Precise patient-physician conversations can be inhibited by a reluctance or inability to speak accurately about the vulva and vagina, with the terms often being used interchangeably. There is a paucity of scientific evidence and clinical guidelines to support women and physicians in ensuring best practices in feminine hygiene. In this review, the unmet needs in the field are highlighted. Evidence is provided for the complex array of physiological and pathological systems, mechanisms and behaviours
