Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) with the neuro cybernetic prosthesis (NCP) is an approved treatment of partial seizures for patients 12 years and older. Developmentally disabled or mentally retarded patients with epilepsy may also benefit from VNS; however, their evaluation and management pose greater problems. A retrospective chart review was conducted on all patients diagnosed with mild to severe mental retardation who had an NCP implanted. Records of these 21 patients, ranging in age from 3 to 56 years, were reviewed regarding VNS efficacy, side effects, behavioral changes, and alterations in

INTRODUCTION: Dizziness or syncope may occur during treatment of nasal disease. These symptoms are considered imputable to the vagovagal reflex, which is partly involved in neurogenic syncope. In response to trigeminal nerve stimulation, the vagus nerve causes a sudden fall in heart rate and blood pressure. Elevation in blood adrenaline level during pain or tension was noted, and its effects on vagovagal reflexes were studied.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten cats were used in the experiment. The vagus nerve was exposed on the right side of the neck by making an incision in the trachea, and a plati

Over the past three decades, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has emerged as a promising rehabilitation therapy for a diverse range of conditions, demonstrating substantial clinical potential. This review summarizes the in vivo biological mechanisms activated by VNS and their corresponding clinical applications. Furthermore, it outlines the selection of parameters and equipment for VNS implementation. VNS exhibits anti-inflammatory effects, modulates neurotransmitter release, enhances neural plasticity, inhibits apoptosis and autophagy, maintains blood-brain barrier integrity, and promotes angiog

We review the structure and function of the vagus nerve, drawing on information obtained in humans and experimental animals. The vagus nerve is the largest and longest cranial nerve, supplying structures in the neck, thorax, and abdomen. It is also the only cranial nerve in which the vast majority of its innervation territory resides outside the head. While belonging to the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system, the nerve is primarily sensory-it is dominated by sensory axons. We discuss the macroscopic and microscopic features of the nerve, including a detailed description o

Fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome is a common illness characterized by chronic widespread pain, sleep problems, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties. Dysfunctional neurotransmitter systems that influence the body's endogenous stress response systems are thought to underlie many of the major FM-related symptoms. A model of FM pathogenesis suggests biological and psychosocial variables interact to influence the genetic predisposition, but the precise mechanisms remain unclear. The Polyvagal Theory provides a theoretical framework from which to investigate potential biological mechanisms. The vagus nerve

While thermosensation from external environment has been extensively studied, physiological responses to temperature changes inside the body and the underlying regulatory mechanisms are less understood. As a critical link between body and brain that relays visceral organ information and regulates numerous physiological functions, the vagus nerve has been proposed to mediate diverse visceral thermal reflexes and indirectly regulate body temperature. However, the precise role of the vagus nerve in body thermal responses or visceral organ-related thermoregulation is still under debate due to exte

Accumulating evidence points to a beneficial effect ofvagus nerve activity in tumor development. The vagus nerve is proposed to slow tumorigenesis because of its anti-inflammatory properties mediated through ACh and the α7nAChR. Since α7nAChRs are widely expressed by many types of immune cells we hypothesized that the vagus nerve affects the tumor microenvironment and anticancer immunity. We found direct evidence in studies using animal cancer models that vagus nerve stimulation alters immunological responses relevant to the tumor microenvironment. Also studies in pathologies other than cancer

The vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) is the main nerve of the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system. Vagal paragangliomas (VPGLs) are a prime example of an endocrine tumor associated with the vagus nerve. This rare, neural crest tumor constitutes the second most common site of hereditary head and neck paragangliomas (HNPGLs), most often in relation to mutations in the succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit D (SDHD) gene. The treatment paradigm for VPGL has progressively shifted from surgery to abstention or therapeutic radiation with curative-like outcomes. Parathyroid tissue

INTRODUCTION: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been approved for the treatment of refractory epilepsy when resective surgery is not possible, and has proved to be highly effective. Series published in the literature suggest a beneficial effect of VNS in the treatment of migraine.
AIMS: To determine the degree to which headaches improve in patients with migraine after the placement of VNS to treat refractory epilepsy, and to evaluate what variables are associated with an increased chance of success with this measure.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: An observation-based retrospective study was conducte

The glossopharyngeal, vagus and spinal accessory nerves are closely related anatomically, and to a certain extent, functionally. We present an overview of their anatomy, highlighting the important clinical and imaging implications. The main pathologic lesions arising from these nerves are also discussed and the imaging features reviewed.

The cholinergic nervous system attenuates the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and inhibits inflammatory processes. Hence, in animal models of intestinal inflammation, such as postoperative ileus and dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis, vagus nerve stimulation ameliorates disease activity. On the other hand, in infectious models of microbial peritonitis, vagus nerve activation seemingly acts counteractive; it impairs bacterial clearance and increases mortality. It is originally indicated that the key mediator of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, acetylcholine (ACh), inhibit

Schwannomas of the vagus nerve are very rare and the differential diagnosis is extremely difficult. They are very often asymptomatic and imaging techniques are helpful, but fine needle biopsy is often inconclusive. Total resection is the treatment of choice.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) inhibits nociceptive behavior in animals. VNS might reduce pain in patients with VNS device implanted for intractable seizures. One case report described possible benefits on migraines. We contacted all patients who received VNS therapy for intractable epilepsy between 1993 and 1999 at Southern Illinois University, Springfield, Illinois. Patients who had concomitant chronic pain were subsequently interviewed. Pain intensity before and after VNS implantation was rated by the patient as average, worst, and least and on numeric rating scale from 1 to 10. Current pain

The origination and course of the glossopharyngeal, vagus and accessory cranial nerves explains their function and localizes pathology. Abnormalities of these lower cranial nerves may be intrinsic or extrinsic and is due to a multiplicity of disease processes. The clinical presentation of the involved cranial nerve helps to guide imaging evaluation. Magnetic resonance imaging without and with contrast is the mainstay of imaging of cranial nerves IX, X and XI pathology, but computed tomography provides substantial information as well.
