Microbiota diversity and hygienic behavior in a honey bee breeding population: Insights into Varroa resistance.

Hygienic behavior is a key trait in the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) associated with resistance to diseases and tolerance to the parasitic mite Varroa destructor. Worker bees expressing this behavior are able to detect and remove unhealthy or infested brood, thereby limiting pathogen transmission and mite reproduction. In recent years, the gut microbiota has emerged as an important factor in honey bee health, influencing immunity and disease resistance. Hygienic behavior is a form of social immune defense; however, whether gut microbiota composition contributes to variation in this disea

Efficacy of plant-based remedies for Varroa destructor control in honey bee colonies: A preliminary study.

The Western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) plays a crucial role in global ecosystems and agriculture, yet the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor remains a primary cause of severe varroosis and significant colony morbidity and mortality. Current reliance on synthetic acaricides often leads to the development of mite resistance and raises concerns regarding chemical residues in hive products. This has created an urgent need for innovative and effective veterinary strategies for parasite control. This study investigated the efficacy of traditional plant-based remedies as an alternative treatment

Genetic variability of the honey bee mite, Varroa destructor, from a humid continental climatic region of Canada, and temperate and tropical climatic regions of Mexico.

Varroa destructor is a damaging mite of Western honey bees (Apis mellifera). Genetic variability of the mite in different regions of the world could be related to the movement of infested bees or other factors, such as climate. In this study, V. destructor samples were collected from tropical and temperate climate regions of Mexico, and a humid continental climate region of Canada. COX-1 AFLPs showed that all the mites were the Korean haplotype. Four microsatellites revealed nine haplogroups from the continental climate region of Canada, compared to three haplogroups from the tropical and temp

Parasites and Pathogens of the Honeybee (Apis mellifera) and Their Influence on Inter-Colonial Transmission.

Pathogens and parasites may facilitate their transmission by manipulating host behavior. Honeybee pathogens and pests need to be transferred from one colony to another if they are to maintain themselves in a host population. Inter-colony transmission occurs typically through honeybee workers not returning to their home colony but entering a foreign colony ("drifting"). Pathogens might enhance drifting to enhance transmission to new colonies. We here report on the effects infection by ten honeybee viruses and Nosema spp., and Varroa mite infestation on honeybee drifting. Genotyping of workers c

Risk factors associated with the presence of Varroa destructor in honey bee colonies from east-central Argentina.

Varroa destructor is considered one of the major threats for worldwide apiculture. Damage caused by varroa mite includes body weight loss, malformation and weakening of the bees. It was also suggested as the main cause associated with colony winter mortality and as an important vector for several honey bee viruses. Little is known about multiple factors and their interaction affecting V. destructor prevalence in apiaries from South America. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors associated with V. destructor prevalence in east-central Argentina. Parasitic mite infestation level and

Darwin's solution: Honeybees survive mite vectors and viruses through natural selection.

Complex host-vector-virus interfaces can impose serious health challenges. Western honeybees have experienced high colony losses globally, mainly driven by the host-shifted, virus-vectoring ectoparasitic mites Varroa destructor and Tropilaelaps mercedesae. Host populations can survive mite infestations through natural selection, offering a long-term strategy for colony health. However, host-vector-virus coevolution requires local adaptations of this triad, which is poorly understood. We propose harnessing natural selection through a global approach focused on standardized monitoring of colony

Improving Apis mellifera iberiensis colony development through a combined spring oxalic acid and autumn amitraz treatment for varroosis control.

Varroa destructor is one of the most important threats to Apis mellifera in warm climates, where extended brood-rearing cycles facilitate exponential growth of the parasite. In attempts to control this mite, Spanish legislation (RD 608/2006) currently mandates one annual treatment in autumn, although this strategy often fails to prevent the parasite from compromising colony health. Here, the mite reduction and safety of supplementing this mandatory treatment (amitraz in slow-release strips, Apitraz®) of A. m. iberiensis colonies in Guadalajara (Spain) with a spring application of slow-release

Evaluation of Combined Use of Protein and Postbiotics Feed Supplements in Honey Beehives in Autumn and Spring.

Feed supplementation in beehives is a commonly necessary practice in beekeeping today, to address the many risks the honey bees face, mainly the climate change and times of food scarcity, agricultural pesticides, or pathogens such as Varroa destructor or Nosema ceranae. Protein supplements and postbiotics products have been evaluated in beehives feed, obtaining improvements of the strength and sanitary status, but they have not been tested in combination. In this study, two experiences have been carried out in autumn and spring to check the potential beneficial effect of this combination in th

Population abundance of Varroa destructor and its effects on Apis mellifera scutellata colonies in Kenya.

The devastating effects of Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman on Western honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera L.) have been well documented. Not only do these mites cause physical damage to parasitized individuals when they feed on them, but they also transmit viruses and other pathogens, weaken colonies and ultimately may cause their death. Unlike the subspecies of European origin, the honeybees of African origin suffer less from mite infestations. Absconding is one of the factors contributing to low V. destructor population in honeybee colonies as it creates a brood-free period. For a long

Investigation of viral and parasitic pathogens in Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae) populations.

In recent years, with the increase in both abiotic and biotic stress factors, there has been a significant decline in honey bee and bumblebee populations worldwide, which in turn threatens pollination services that are crucial for agricultural production. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and incidence of viral and parasitic pathogens in Bombus terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758) individuals obtained from 23 wild-caught queen bumblebees collected in Ordu Province, Türkiye. For this purpose, analyses conducted on bumblebee samples collected from different businesses revealed that the Acute B

High prevalence of Varroa destructor in Apis mellifera colonies from the largest honey producing state in Brazil.

Varroa destructor is regarded as a major threat to beekeeping worldwide. However, there are no official reports of V. destructor occurrence or related damage in Rio Grande do Sul, the largest honey producing state of Brazil. The present study aims to estimate the prevalence of V. destructor, identify its potential risk factors and perform spatial analysis according to the level of infestation of the colonies. A total of 1302 samples of adult honey bees from hives across 375 farms were analyzed. The overall prevalence of Varroa destructor was 95,16 %. The study revealed two risk factors for hig

Evolutionarily diverse origins of deformed wing viruses in western honey bees.

Novel transmission routes can allow infectious diseases to spread, often with devastating consequences. Ectoparasitic varroa mites vector a diversity of RNA viruses, having switched hosts from the eastern to western honey bees (Apis cerana to Apis mellifera). They provide an opportunity to explore how novel transmission routes shape disease epidemiology. As the principal driver of the spread of deformed wing viruses (mainly DWV-A and DWV-B), varroa infestation has also driven global honey bee health declines. The more virulent DWV-B strain has been replacing the original DWV-A strain in many r

Pesticide-Virus Interactions in Honey Bees: Challenges and Opportunities for Understanding Drivers of Bee Declines.

Honey bees are key agricultural pollinators, but beekeepers continually suffer high annual colony losses owing to a number of environmental stressors, including inadequate nutrition, pressures from parasites and pathogens, and exposure to a wide variety of pesticides. In this review, we examine how two such stressors, pesticides and viruses, may interact in additive or synergistic ways to affect honey bee health. Despite what appears to be a straightforward comparison, there is a dearth of studies examining this issue likely owing to the complexity of such interactions. Such complexities inclu

Impact of Varroa destructor and deformed wing virus on emergence, cellular immunity, wing integrity and survivorship of Africanized honey bees in Mexico.

The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor is the primary health problem of honey bees (Apis mellifera) worldwide. Africanized honey bees in Brazil have demonstrated tolerance to the mite, but there is controversy about the degree of mite tolerance of Africanized bees in other countries. This study was conducted to quantify the effect of V. destructor parasitism on emergence, hemocyte concentration, wing integrity and longevity of Africanized honey bees in Mexico. Africanized bee brood were artificially infested with V. destructor mites and held in an incubator until emergence as adults and comp

Effects of lithium chloride on queen egg-laying performance and worker honey bee behavior.

BACKGROUND: Lithium chloride (LiCl) has recently emerged as a potential treatment for Varroa in honey bee colonies, yet its effects on bee behavior remain poorly understood. This study investigates, for the first time, the impact of oral exposure to chronic 50 mM LiCl-administered via candy over 7-10 days-on three key behavioral traits: queen oviposition, worker brood care, and worker aggression. Laboratory assays were conducted using caged bees with ad libitum access to LiCl-enriched or control candy. RESULTS: Egg-laying rates did not differ significantly between LiCl-treated and control gro

Low fertility, fecundity and numbers of mated female offspring explain the lower reproductive success of the parasitic mite Varroa destructor in African honeybees.

Although Varroa destructor is the most serious ecto-parasite to the honeybee, Apis mellifera L., some honeybee populations such as Apis mellifera scutellata in Kenya can survive mite infestations without treatment. Previously, we reported that grooming behaviour could be a potential tolerant mechanism expressed by this honeybee subspecies towards mite infestation. However, both hygienic and grooming behaviours could not explain the lower mite-infestation levels recorded in these colonies. Here, we investigated the involvement of other potential resistant mechanisms including suppression of mit

Varroa mites escape the evolutionary trap of haplodiploidy.

Genetic diversity is essential for populations adapting to environmental-changes. Following genetic bottlenecks, invasive species often have reduced diversity, yet must rapidly adapt to novel environments. This paradox is especially pronounced in parasites, which face repeated transmission bottlenecks and anthropogenic countermeasures. The challenge of maintaining diversity in the short-term intensifies in haplodiploid species, where males inherit and transmit only half of their mother's genome, limiting effective population size. To examine how such species may maintain adaptability, we study

Coevolution stabilizes the honey bee-Varroa destructor-virus system on islands.

For 65 years, the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor, along with the deformed wing virus (DWV) it vectors, has killed millions of Apis mellifera honey bee colonies globally. The coevolution of the 'bee-mite-virus' system in Hawaii over 17 years has been closely followed. Resistance to V. destructor evolved in the free-living honey bees on Oahu by detecting and removing a high proportion of mite-infested brood cells, as seen in other mite-resistant honey bees. On Big Island, miticides remain widely used, so on both islands, DWV prevalence decreased, but a more virulent recombinant form evolve

Comparative Evaluation of Organic and Commercial Treatments Against Varroa destructor in Apis mellifera: Implications for Honey Yield in Northeastern Mexico.

Infestation by Varroa destructor represents one of the major challenges for beekeeping, as it compromises both colony health and honey productivity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of different organic treatments for the control of V. destructor and their effect on honey production in Apis mellifera colonies located on the central region of Tamaulipas, Mexico. A total of 150 colonies were assigned to five treatments: T1, oxalic acid with glycerin; T2, sublimated oxalic acid; T3, Thymol, T4; HappyVarr; and T5, an untreated control.
