Experiments on healthy rats showed that increased diuresis induced by administration of water, polyethylene glycol 400, furosemide, or 1-desamino-arginine-vasotocin is associated with increased protein excretion by the kidneys. The results can be explained by enhanced filtration of plasma proteins in glomeruli during polyuria of various geneses.

Polydipsia and polyuria are pronounced in chickens of a selected strain and this diabetes insipidus is inherited. The kidneys of such birds are capable of an antidiuretic response when lysine vasopressin or arginine vasotocin is injected. Osmotic pressure and sodium concentration of the plasmas of normal and mutant chickens are identical. Chicks predicted to have diabetes insipidus on the basis of parental pedigree are polydipsic.

A case report is presented of primary (psychogenic) polydipsia in a pet African grey parrot. A water deprivation test was employed to test the release of arginine vasotocin and the response of the kidneys to this neurohypophyseal hormone. After a diagnosis was made water restriction resulted in the disappearance of clinical signs. It seems that psychogenic polydipsia, like feather picking, is a neurosis resulting from social deprivation.

In intact, non-ovariectomized female rats in spontaneous behavioral estrus, the i.c.v. injection of oxytocin significantly increased lordosis quotient and lordosis duration, starting from a dose of 1 ng/rat. On the other hand, the oxytocin antagonist, d(CH2)5Tyr(Me)-[Orn]8-vasotocin, injected at the same doses and by the same route, decreased lordosis quotient and lordosis duration, and prevented the effect of oxytocin. These data further support the notion that oxytocin plays a physiological role in female sexual receptivity.

Oxytocin is involved in the control of different behaviors, from sexual behavior and food consumption to empathy, social and affective behaviors. An imbalance of central oxytocinergic neurotransmission has been also associated with different mental pathologies, from depression, anxiety and anorexia/bulimia to schizophrenia, autism and drug dependence.
