Vegetarian and vegan diets have increased worldwide in the last decades, according to the knowledge that they might prevent coronary heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Althought plant-based diets are at risk of nutritional deficiencies such as proteins, iron, vitamin D, calcium, iodine, omega-3, and vitamin B12, the available evidence shows that well planned vegetarian and vegan diets may be considered safe during pregnancy and lactation, but they require a strong awareness for a balanced intake of key nutrients. A review of the scientific literature in this field was performed, focus

Vegetarian diets have been associated with atherosclerosis protection, with healthier atherosclerosis risk profiles, as well as lower prevalence of, and mortality from, ischemic heart disease and stroke. However, there are few data concerning the possible cardiovascular effects of a vegan diet (with no meat, dairy or egg products). Vitamin B-12 deficiency is highly prevalent in vegetarians; this can be partially alleviated by taking dairy/egg products in lact-ovo-vegetarians. However, metabolic vitamin B-12 deficiency is highly prevalent in vegetarians in Australia, Germany, Italy and Austria,

We report on the case of an infant who was hospitalized because of failure to thrive, megaloblastic anemia, and delayed psychomotor development. He was 10 months old and had been exclusively breast-fed by his vegan mother. Investigations showed vitamin B(12) deficiency with hematocytopenia and pervasive developmental disorders as well as vitamin K and vitamin D deficiencies. The infant's mother presented the same deficiencies. Introduction of vitamin supplementation normalized the biological disorders, and the infant showed weight gain and neurological improvement. This case highlights that a

We explored the epigenomic effects of vegan diet (VD) versus meat-rich diet (MR) and identified mechanisms that help to explain how VD affects epigenetic gene regulation. Genome-wide DNA methylation profiles in 48 healthy individuals were investigated after a 1-month randomized isocaloric dietary intervention comparing effects of a VD versus a MR. Genome-wide DNA methylation analysis revealed changes in differentially methylated positions following dietary intervention, with the VD group showing a higher degree of gene-promoter silencing in cancer-related pathways and cell growth-associated pa

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency is responsible for a variety of complications, particularly neurological/neuropsychiatric complications, including depression, irritability, paresthesia and insomnia. Since vitamin B12 is found in animal-derived products, vegans/vegetarians are at a greater risk for developing vitamin B12 deficiency.
AIMS: This study aims to investigate the occurrence of vitamin B12 deficiency among a sample of adult Lebanese population, with a particular emphasis on assessing the severity of its neurological/neuropsychiatric signs and symptoms, especially among vegans/veget

Background: The oral application of vitamin B-12 may prevent its deficiency if the vitamin is absorbed via the mucosal barrier. Objectives: We studied the effect of the use of a vitamin B-12-fortified toothpaste on vitamin-status markers in vegans and assessed the efficiency of markers in the identification of vitamin-augmentation status.Design: In this 12-wk, double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study, 76 vegans received either a placebo (n = 34) or vitamin B-12 (n = 42) toothpaste. Sixty-six subjects (n = 30 in the placebo arm; n = 36 in the vitamin B-12 arm) completed the intervent

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Evidence regarding the nutritional characteristics of strictly vegan diets during pregnancy and their potential associations with fetal growth remains limited. We aimed to characterize nutrient intake among vegan pregnant women and to examine dietary factors associated with neonatal birth weight and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth.
METHODS: This secondary analysis of a prospective observational study included women with singleton pregnancies who delivered at a single medical center and adhered to a consistent diet. Participants were classified as vegan or non-vegan an

Interest in plant-based diets, including vegan diets is increasing. Yet, there has been limited assessment of the dietary intake of contemporary vegans in Australia. Sixty-six adult Australian vegans completed a four-day, semi-weighed food diary on two occasions. Intake from diet and supplements and diet alone was compared to the Australian Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) for selected nutrients. Risk of micronutrient inadequacy was assessed using the cut-point method, with comparison to the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) or Adequate Intake (AI). The contribution of Discretionary Food (DF

BACKGROUND: Chronic urticaria, characterized by persistent hives and pruritus lasting over six weeks, often presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. While its etiology is frequently idiopathic, associations with nutritional deficiencies, such as vitamin B12 deficiency, have been observed.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old female with no significant medical history presented with chronic, treatment-resistant hives persisting for several years. Comprehensive evaluations, including allergy testing and autoimmune screenings, were unremarkable. Further investigation revealed a significant vi

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine the difference between the extent of muscle damaging exercise on muscle function variables of vegans and omnivores.
METHODS: Twenty recreationally trained participants completed the study. Participants were assigned to either vegan (n = 10) or omnivore (n = 10) groups. Subjects completed a consent visit followed by 2 visits consisting of running exercise sessions and test familiarization. They returned to the laboratory for visit 4 3-5 days after visit 3 to complete the testing battery. Following the testing, the participants performed a

A vegan diet, which excludes all animal-derived products, has been associated with some improvements in health, while also conferring environmental benefits. Understanding the psychological determinants of successfully switching to a vegan diet will help to inform the design of interventions supporting long-term dietary change. Studies to date have tended to focus on reasoned motives underlying the decision to initiate such a dietary shift. Yet, focusing on reasons for switching may overlook the importance of a broader range of psychological factors that may help or hinder attempts to maintain

INTRODUCTION: Vegetarian diets can be healthy when they are well balanced and if a variety of foods is consumed. However, elimination of animal products from the diet (vegan diets) decreases the intake of some essential nutrients and may influence the bone metabolism. This is especially important in childhood and adolescence, when growth and bone turnover are most intensive. The aim of the study was to assess the effect of vegan diet on bone density (BMD) density and serum concentrations of bone metabolism markers.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined a family on vegan diet which consisted of pa

Vegetarian and vegan diets are consistently associated with reduced cardiometabolic risk, despite providing minimal amounts of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), key precursors of bioactive lipid mediators, raising questions about n-3 PUFA metabolism and requirements in plant-based populations. This review examines current evidence on the metabolic fate of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), its conversion to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the implications for n-3 PUFA-derived signaling pathways. Although conversion efficiency is limited, it is

The multidrug resistant Mycobacterium abscessus is an opportunistic pathogen of increasing concern, causing infections of skin and soft tissue as well as pulmonary, it can be life-threatening for immunocompromised individuals. Current treatment strategies are ineffective and new approaches to combat infections are imperative. The antimicrobial potential of Manuka honey has been recently demonstrated to be effective against M. abscessus, but the potential to improve its efficacy as well as reduce demand on a natural resource have not yet been explored. The development of medical honey paves the

The legal recognition of veganism highlights the evolving landscape of dietary choices and their status under human rights law. This paper examines the legal status of vegan diets under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), focusing on public institutions such as prisons and hospitals. By analyzing the first relevant cases before the European Court of Human Rights, it explores the protection of vegan diets under Articles 9 (freedom of thought, conscience, and religion) and 14 (prohibition of discrimination) of the ECHR. The paper also considers whether access to a vegan diet relates

Factors like health concerns, environmental issues, and ethics have driven the rapid rise in veganism's popularity over the last decade. While studies confirm that veganism reduces the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, significant challenges persist in meeting nutritional needs. This review identifies critical dietary deficiencies common in vegan diets, including inadequacies in vitamin B12, iron, calcium, vitamin D, Iodine, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids, and explores strategies to mitigate these risks. These deficiencies result in chronic diseases like an
