Soy is a basic food ingredient of traditional Asian cuisine used for thousands of years. In Western countries, soybeans have been introduced about a hundred years ago and recently they are mainly used for surrogate foods production. Soy and soy foods are common nutritional solutions for vegetarians, due to their high protein content and versatility in the production of meat analogues and milk substitutes. However, there are some doubts about the potential effects on health, such as the effectiveness on cardiovascular risk reduction or, conversely, on the possible disruption of thyroid function

BACKGROUND: Vegetarian diets are associate with cardiovascular and other health benefits, but little is known about mental health benefits or risks.
AIMS: To determine whether self-identification of vegetarian dietary habits is associated with significant depressive symptoms in men.
METHOD: Self-report data from 9668 adult male partners of pregnant women in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) included identification as vegetarian or vegan, dietary frequency data and the Edinburgh Post Natal Depression Scale (EPDS). Continuous and binary outcomes were assessed using m

Pregnant and breastfeeding women who eat vegetarian are a source of much controversy. This is the result of concern that eliminating some or all animal produce may lead to nutritional deficiencies and thus adversely affect the mother's and child's health. The American Dietetic Association's position is that appropriately planned vegan, lacto-vegetarian and lacto-ovo-vegetarian diets ensure a normal course of pregnancy and lactation. However, in practice the balancing of such a diet can pose certain difficulties, especially for individuals without the necessary experience or knowledge about nut

A vegetarian diet generally includes plenty of vegetables and fruits, which are rich in phytochemicals, antioxidants, fiber, magnesium, vitamins C and E, Fe³⁺, folic acid and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), and is low in cholesterol, total fat and saturated fatty acid, sodium, Fe²⁺, zinc, vitamin A, B₁₂ and D, and especially n-3 PUFA. Mortality from all-cause, ischemic heart disease, and circulatory and cerebrovascular diseases was significantly lower in vegetarians than in omnivorous populations. Compared with omnivores, the incidence of cancer and type 2 diabetes was also significantl

OBJECTIVE: To explain why vegetarian subjects develop morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases unrelated to vitamin B status and Framingham criteria.
METHODS: A study of 24 rural male subjects 18 to 30 y old and 15 urban male controls was conducted in the Sahel region of Chad. Food consumption was determined from a dietary questionnaire, and overall health status was assessed by body weight, body mass index, serum albumin, plasma transthyretin, urinary nitrogen, and creatinine. Plasma lipids, vitamins B6, B9 and B12, homocysteine, and related sulfur amino acids were measured as se

Glutaric aciduria type I is an autosomal recessive metabolic disease (1 case/30,000) characterized by a progressive dystonic-diakinetic syndrome in children. Pathologic examination reveals striatal degeneration of the caudate and putamen nucleus and biochemical analysis shows glutaryl CoA dehydrogenase deficiency. Values of glutaric and -hydroxyglutaric acids in urine are usually increased. Currently, the disease is considered untreatable since there are usually irreversible lesions in the central nervous system at diagnosis. However, treatment can be provided to pre-symptomatic children and u

Records of the dietary intake of 52 preschool vegetarian children seen from 1974 to 1976 revealed that macrobiotic vegetarian diets provided amounts of vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus that were marginal as well as less than the amounts provided by other vegetarian diets. Vitamin D supplements were rarely given. Two subjects had roentgenographic evidence of rickets. The medical histories of 32 children on macrobiotic diets who were examined in 1977 more frequently included prior physical and roentgenographic findings indicative of rickets, whereas those of 17 other vegetarian children did no

The association between vegetarian and vegan dietary patterns and chronic low-grade inflammation represents a growing area within nutritional epidemiology, with potential implications for lifestyle-based prevention and management of non-communicable diseases. Although recent meta-analyses of cross-sectional studies conducted over the past 25 years suggest a trend toward lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers among vegetarians compared to non-vegetarians, the strength of this evidence remains limited. This chapter offers a state-of-the-art overview of this topic, providing a brief summary of k

Studies assessing potential differences in trace element status among vegans, lacto-ovo-vegetarians (LOV) and omnivores (OMN) are largely lacking. In this cross-sectional study, urinary levels of twelve elements were analysed in thirty-eight vegans, thirty-seven LOV and forty OMN. After adjustment for covariates, non-creatinine-adjusted As levels were lower in LOV (-54 %) and vegans (-54 %) compared with OMN (P = 0·009). Compared with OMN, vegans (but not LOV) had lower Hg (-48 %; P = 0·028) and higher Cd levels (+42 %; P = 0·023). Other elements (Al, Co, Cu, Pb, Mo, Ni, Tl, Sn and Zn) were si

In contemporary society, where vegetarian diets are gaining popularity, it is imperative to develop a profound understanding of these individuals' dietary choices and their health implications. Specifically, it is crucial to examine how the prevalence of fat phobia affects their dietary preferences, in order to promote a balanced nutritional approach. The aim of the study is to evaluate the carbohydrate quality and nutrition knowledge level of vegan and vegetarian individuals in Istanbul, Turkey, and to examine their relationship with fatphobia. A questionnaire consisting of questions about so

This study aims to examine lifestyle predictors of the utilization of colorectal cancer screening. Using modified Poisson regression, we studied self-reported colorectal cancer screening utilization (colonoscopy or fecal occult blood test) with various dietary and lifestyle characteristics among 33,922 subjects aged 51 + years in the Adventist Health Study-2, a large population-based prospective cohort study. According to the multivariable-adjusted models, vegetarians were less likely to report screening: vegans, prevalence ratio (PR) = 0.80 (95% confidence interval 0.77-0.83); lacto-ovo-veget

Low iodine intakes have been documented in different population groups in Norway. We aimed to assess iodine status, dietary intake, supplement and macroalgae use, and iodine knowledge in vegans, vegetarians and pescatarians. In this study, 115 vegans, 55 vegetarians and 35 pescatarians from the Oslo region of Norway, aged 18-60 years, participated. A spot urine sample was collected along with a dietary assessment of iodine intake, supplement and macroalgae use. The median urinary iodine concentration (MUIC) in vegans was 43 µg/L (moderate iodine deficiency), in vegetarians 67 µg/L and in pesca

The goal of this paper is to describe the role of vitamin B12 deficiency in cardiovascular disease development among vegetarians. Vegetarians have a high prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency. Deficiency of this vitamin is associated with a variety of atherogenic processes that are mainly, but not exclusively, due to vitamin B12 deficiency-induced hyperhomocysteinemia. Each 5-μmol/L increase above 10 μmol/L of serum homocysteine is associated with a 20% increased risk of circulatory health problems. Mean homocysteine concentration >10 μmol/L among vegetarians was reported in 32 of 34 reports. M

Vegetarians may have subtle nutritional deficiencies which have been related to the occurrence of an unrecognized malabsorption syndrome. The excess phytate content in cereals, nuts, legumes and oilseeds which represent the mainstay of their food intake, seems to play a central role in the pathogenesis of this malabsorption syndrome as an inverse relationship has been shown to link the phytate content of the diet with the intestinal absorption of trace minerals and proteins. We postulate that manipulating the endogenous digestive microflora of subjects on a vegetarian diet through administerin

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (fifth edition) (DSM-V) (American Psychiatric Association) provides clinical guidance for psychiatrists on mental disorders. It emphasises both clinical utility and the concern of sociocultural context but does not specify how to balance the need for practicability and the openness of culture. Attempting to address this conflict, I focus on the narration of trauma in Han Kang's The Vegetarian (2015) and discuss how traumatic narrative enables us to understand traumatised patients' mental states. In addition, allowing other family member

Introduction One of the most essential risk factors for chronic medical conditions is dietary intake. The dietary habits in Saudi Arabia shifted towards the Western diet, which is high in fat, salt and sugar. Plant-based diets like vegetarianism and veganism have gained popularity in the last few years. Individuals commit to a plant-based diet for many reasons. Plant-based diets are associated with various health benefits but can still cause nutrition deficiencies. Purpose The aim of the study is to examine the proportion of vegan, vegetarian and omnivore diets in Saudi Arabia. To compare bet

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Previous small studies have shown either no difference or a lower risk of symptomatic gallstone disease in vegetarians than in non-vegetarians. This study examined the incidence of symptomatic gallstone disease in a cohort of British vegetarians and non-vegetarians, and investigated the associations between nutrient intake and risk of symptomatic gallstone disease.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: The data were analysed from 49 652 adults enroled in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Oxford study, one-third of whom were vegetarian. The linked datab

Healthy diet is highly important, especially in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Proper nutrition provides the energy to perform everyday activities, prevents infection, builds muscle, and helps to prevent kidney disease from getting worse. However, what does a proper diet mean for a CKD patient? Nutrition requirements differ depending on the level of kidney function and the presence of co-morbid conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The diet of CKD patients should help to slow the rate of progression of kidney failure, reduce uremic toxicity, dec

Rare metabolic diseases may sometimes arise acutely and endanger human life if not immediately recognized and treated. Marchiafava Bignami disease is an uncommon neurologic disorder described in alcohol abusers and characterized by an acute severe damage of brain white matter. Even more rarely, it has been reported in non-alcohol addicted patients, but never in vegetarian people. This is a case report of a young vegetarian woman, accustomed to drink high amounts of tea, who, three weeks after her first natural childbirth, developed serious motor and cognitive disturbances. A timely brain magne

A vegetarian diet may be adopted for various reasons that can include ecological, economic, religious, ethical and health considerations. In the latter case they arise from the desire to lose weight, in tackling obesity, improving physical fitness and/or in reducing the risk of acquiring certain diseases. It has been shown that properly applied vegetarian diet is the most effective way of reducing body mass (expressed as BMI), improving the plasma lipid profile and in decreasing the incidence of high arterial blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, metabolic syndrome and arterioscleros
