UNLABELLED: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that baseline global GHG emissions may increase 25-90% from 2000 to 2030, with carbon dioxide (CO2 emissions growing 40-110% over the same period. On-road vehicles are a major source of CO2 emissions in all the developed countries, and in many of the developing countries in the world. Similarly, several criteria air pollutants are associated with transportation, for example, carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO(x)), and particulate matter (PM). Therefore, the need to accurately quantify transportation-related emiss

Transportation has emerged as the second largest source of global CO2 emissions. As an applied practice of decarbonization and electrification, electric vehicles (EVs) present significant potential for reducing CO2 emissions during the use phase. However, the coal-dominated energy mix in China introduces variability in the effectiveness of CO2 emission reductions associated with EVs, both temporally and spatially. Therefore, the designation of targeted policy research on road transportation and transportation industries in different regions is an urgent problem to be solved at present. In this

On-road vehicles continue to be a major source of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in the United States and in other countries around the world. The goal of this study is to compare and evaluate emission inventories and long-term trends in vehicular NOx emissions. Taxable fuel sales data and in-use measurements of emission factors are combined to generate fuel-based NOx emission inventories for California and the US over the period 1990-2020. While gasoline and diesel fuel sales increased over the last three decades, total on-road NOx emissions declined by approximately 70% since 1990, with a st

As input to a winter use plan, activity, fuel use, and tailpipe exhaust emissions of over snow vehicles (OSV), including five snow coaches and one snowmobile, were measured on a designated route in Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Engine load was quantified in terms of vehicle specific power (VSP), which is a function of speed, acceleration, and road grade. Compared to highway vehicles, VSP for OSVs is more sensitive to rolling resistance and less sensitive to aerodynamic drag. Fuel use rates increased linearly (R2>0.96) with VSP. For gasoline-fueled OSVs, fuel-based emission rates of carbon m

Heavy-duty diesel vehicle idling consumes fuel and reduces atmospheric quality, but its restriction cannot simply be proscribed, because cab heat or air-conditioning provides essential driver comfort. A comprehensive tailpipe emissions database to describe idling impacts is not yet available. This paper presents a substantial data set that incorporates results from the West Virginia University transient engine test cell, the E-55/59 Study and the Gasoline/Diesel PM Split Study. It covered 75 heavy-duty diesel engines and trucks, which were divided into two groups: vehicles with mechanical fuel

In this paper, three unregulated components, ammonia, nitrous oxide and hydrogen cyanide, emitted from five passenger vehicles are investigated. With focus upon emission factors from existing production technology, vehicles produced between 1989 and 1998 with considerable mileage (7000 to 280,000) are chosen. Among the five vehicles, four were sold in the European market, whereas one was sold in the US market. The vehicles are tested on a chassis dynamometer. An EU2000 Driving Cycle (NEDC) and a US Urban Driving Cycle (UDC) of the Federal Test Procedure 75 (FTP-75) are used in the study. The r

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from gasoline vehicles spanning a wide range of emission types was investigated using an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) by conducting chassis dynamometer tests. Aided by advanced mass spectrometric techniques, SOA precursors, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and intermediate/semivolatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs), were comprehensively characterized. The reconstructed SOA produced from the speciated VOCs and I/SVOCs can explain 69% of the SOA measured downstream of an OFR upon 0.5-3 days' OH exposure. While VOCs can only explain 10% of total

An instrumented EURO I Ford Mondeo was used to perform a real-world comparison of vehicle exhaust (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen) emissions and fuel consumption for diesel and 5% biodiesel in diesel blend (B5) fuels. Data were collected on multiple replicates of three standardised on-road journeys: (1) a simple urban route; (2) a combined urban/inter-urban route; and, (3) an urban route subject to significant traffic management. At the total journey measurement level, data collected here indicate that replacing diesel with a B5 substitute could result in

The use of both oxygenated fuels in carbon monoxide (CO) nonattainment areas and reformulated gasoline in ozone nonattainment areas has been mandated by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Methanol has been proposed as an alternative fuel for CO nonattainment areas. Its use will potentially increase indoor methanol inhalation exposure resulting from the evaporation of methanol vapor from methanol-fueled vehicles parked in residential garages. Indoor air concentrations of methanol, benzene, and toluene were measured in a residential home with an attached garage. The effects of vehicle emission c

This article presents the results of research on compromising emanations generated by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the context of potential electromagnetic eavesdropping and the reconstruction of transmitted video data. Two commercial UAV systems were analyzed: the Autel EVO II Pro and the DJI Mavic 3. The aim of the research was to identify the electromagnetic characteristics of unintentional emissions recorded during the transmission of selected imagery and to assess their suitability for reconstructing the information processed by the UAV system. The measurements were conducted in an

In this paper, a combination of catalyst sample evaluation and vehicle test is used to deeply study the formation mechanism of ammonia in the process of three-way catalytic reaction, and further explore the influence of catalyst formulation and aging on ammonia emissions. The catalytic sample test shows that CO reacts with terminal hydroxyl and bridging hydroxyl on the surface of the catalyst to generate H2 at low temperature, which then reduces NO to generate NH3. At high temperatures, CO reacts with water to generate H2, or hydrocarbon compounds in exhaust react with steam to generate hydrog

Studies have demonstrated that vehicles with gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines produce significantly higher emissions during a cold start than under hot-stabilized periods. A cold start is typically defined by the temperature of the engine or the catalytic converter; its extended effect on emissions, after the vehicle reaches the warm-up stage, has seldom been investigated. In this study, the influence of the post cold start period on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions was evaluated using real-world measurements. Vehicle on-board diagnostic data, fuel consumption, and emissions of multiple

Condensable particulate matter (CPM) represents airborne primary PM rapidly formed through condensation after being discharged to the atmosphere as gaseous pollutants. Compared to CPM produced by stationary sources such as coal-fired power plants, internal combustion engine vehicle originated CPM has not been spotlighted well, even though ICEVs can generate ultrafine CPM nanoparticles (< 100 nm). In addition, vehicle originated CPM contains hazardous materials (e.g., polyaromatic hydrocarbons), thus threatening human health in urban areas. In this study, CPM originating from 8 types of vehicle

Diesel exhaust is a major source of urban particulate matter (PM), especially ultrafine particles, with implications for air quality and public health. Current studies and emission standards mainly target directly emitted, non-volatile particles, whereas temperature-sensitive particles formed or transformed during post-tailpipe cooling remain poorly constrained. Here, we operationally define delayed particulate matter (DPM) as a thermally removable particle fraction and quantify it using temperature-resolved measurements from 30 to 300 °C, combined with chassis-dynamometer and tunnel observati

There have only been a few wintertime studies of heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) NOx emissions in the United States, and while they have observed increased emissions, fleet characterization to identify the cause has been lacking. We have collected wintertime measurements of NOx emission factors from 1591 HDVs at a Utah Port of Entry in December 2020 that includes individual vehicle identification. In general, NOx emission factors for 2011 and newer chassis model year HDV are significantly higher than those for 2017 spring measurements from California. The newest chassis model year HDV (2017-2021) NOx

An increasing number of motor vehicles are connected with negative environmental impacts in relation to their operation. Among the main negative effects are exhaust gas emissions production. The annual increase in passenger cars and emissions from them deteriorates air quality daily. Traffic junctions also have a negative impact on increasing emissions production by exhaust gases. This situation may be caused by vehicle speed fluctuation, mainly when they get closer or leave. This study focuses on the emissions produced by exhaust gases after a road vehicle starts. The research was performed w

Real-world nitrogen oxides (NO x) emissions were estimated using on-board sensor readings from 72 heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs) equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system in California. The results showed that there were large differences between in-use and certification NO x emissions, with 12 HDDVs emitting more than three times the standard during hot-running and idling operations in the real world. The overall NO x conversion efficiencies of the SCR system on many vehicles were well below the 90% threshold that is expected for an efficient SCR system, even when the SCR

U.S. light duty vehicles are subject to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emission standards. Emission compliance is determined by certification testing of selected emissions from representative vehicles on standard driving cycles using chassis dynamometers. Test results are also used in many emission inventories. The dynamometer based emission rates are adjusted to provide the certification levels (CL), which must be lower than the standards for compliance. Although standard driving cycles are based on specific observations of real-world driving, they are not necessarily real-wor

International Vehicle Emissions (IVE) model funded by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is designed to estimate emissions from motor vehicles in developing countries. In this study, the IVE model was evaluated by utilizing a dataset available from the remote sensing measurements on a large number of vehicles at five different sites in Hangzhou, China, in 2004 and 2005. Average fuel-based emission factors derived from the remote sensing measurements were compared with corresponding emission factors derived from IVE calculations for urban, hot stabilized condition. The results show a

Light duty gasoline vehicles account for most of CO hydrocarbons and NOx emissions at the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City (MAMC). In order to ameliorate air pollution from the beginning of 2001, Tier 1 emission standards became mandatory for all new model year sold in the country. Car manufacturers in Mexico do not guarantee the performance of their exhaust emissions systems for a given mileage. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the Tier 1 vehicles will stand the certification values for at least 162000 km with the regular fuel available at the MAMC. Mileage accumulation and det
