This retrospective study was performed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of Günther temporary inferior vena cava (IVC) filters. Fifteen Günther temporary filters were placed in 13 patients because of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) with pulmonary embolism (PE) despite DVT prophylaxis (9/13) or temporary contraindications for anticoagulants as well as recent or pending surgery (4/13). No clinical manifestation of PE was observed during the filtration or during the removal. Günther temporary IVC filters are easy and safe to use, and are effective in clot trapping, protecting patients at high r

PURPOSE: To verify the penetration of struts and hooks of two inferior vena cava (IVC) filters (Günther tulip retrievable filter [GTF] and Celect filter) through the vena cava wall and to assess local or systemic complications resulting from this penetration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight IVC filters were placed in the IVC of four ewes for 30 days (1 GTF and 1 Celect filter in each ewe). Angiographic and laparoscopic examinations of the animals were performed to demonstrate the penetration through the vena cava wall, and the filters were removed under laparoscopic control. Specimens were extra

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters have been used since the 1960s to treat patients with acute risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) to prevent migration of thrombus by trapping it within the filter. Traditional usage has been in patients with contraindication to anticoagulation that carry a significant mortality risk. In this systematic review, we sought to evaluate complications associated with placement of inferior vena cava filters based on published data from the past 20 years. A search was performed on October 6th, 2022, in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and

We present the case of a patient with venous thromboembolic disease and contraindication to anticoagulation, where the incidental finding of a duplication of the inferior vena cava was made. This observation determined the need to implant two embolic protection filters. Although this vascular anomaly is rarely present, it is important to keep this possibility in mind to ensure that proper protection is provided when inferior vena cava filters are implanted.

BACKGROUND: Potential hazards of vena cava filters include migration, tilt, perforation, fracture, and in-filter thrombosis. Due to physiological changes during pregnancy, the incidence of these complications might be different in pregnant women.
AIM: To evaluate the use and safety of inferior vena cava filters in both women who had an inferior vena cava filter inserted during pregnancy, and in women who became pregnant with an inferior vena cava filter in situ.
METHODS: We performed two searches in the literature using the keywords "vena cava filter", "pregnancy" and "obstetrics".
RESULTS:

OBJECTIVE: Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement has increased dramatically in the past two decades. However, literature supporting the efficacy of these devices has been limited and controversial. In the present study, we have evaluated the predictors and rates of technical complications after IVC filter insertion in a large national database.
METHODS: The Vascular Quality Initiative registry was explored (January 2013 to December 2020). Immediate complications were defined as venous injury requiring treatment, filter misplacement (failure to open, deployed >20 mm from intended site or i

OBJECTIVE. Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are commonly used in patients at risk for life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Since the Mobin-Uddin filter was introduced in 1967, numerous other IVC filters have been developed. Given the plethora of IVC filter types, inaccurate identification of a filter on radiographic examination can lead to confusion in the options for filter retrieval and anticoagulation. CONCLUSION. This article highlights permanent IVC designs to assist the interpretation of diagnostic studies. Accurate identification of indwelling IVC filters could have a dramatic effect on

The vena cava filter (VCF) is intended to prevent the progression of deep venous thrombosis to pulmonary embolism. Recently, the indications for VCF placement have expanded, likely due in part to newer retrievable inferior vena caval filters and minimally invasive techniques. This article reviews the available VCFs, the indications for use, the techniques for placement, and possible outcomes and complications.

The introduction of retrievable inferior vena cava (IVC) filters was an important step in the evolution of deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism management. Their removability makes them preferred to permanent filters in many cases. IVC filter retrieval often occurs at a suboptimal rate, leading to complications associated with long-term placement. Improving retrievability includes solutions for patients being lost to follow-up, filter malpositioning, need arising for permanent IVC filtration, filtration requiring longer than the filter's window of retrievability, and filter compromise by th

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are a controversial mechanical adjunct in the prevention of pulmonary embolism, the most serious result of venous thromboembolism. Despite modern IVC filters being in clinical use for more than 45 years, there is still uncertainty amongst many radiologists about the indications for IVC filter placement and their removal, particularly the more recent prophylactic use in patients without confirmed deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). Recently published guidelines on filter use from the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE)

Inferior vena cava filters are often used as alternatives to anticoagulant therapy for the prevention of pulmonary embolism. Many of the clinical data that support the use of these devices stem from relatively limited retrospective studies. The dual purpose of this review is to examine the incidence of thrombotic complications associated with inferior vena cava filters and to discuss the role of anticoagulant therapy concurrent with filter placement. Device-associated morbidity and overall efficacy can be considered only in the context of rates of vena cava thrombosis, insertion-site thrombosi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The benefit of an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter in addition to standard anticoagulation regimens is unknown.
METHODS: We examined data for patients who received IVC filters with anticoagulation (AC-Filter) after an episode of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and compared them with data for those who received anticoagulation only (AC-Only). Outcome measures were new pulmonary embolism (PE), recurrent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and mortality at 90 days and at 5 years. Demographic data included age, gender, and ethnicity/race, prior thromboembolic history, cancer, serum
