Cardiac valve mass revealed by venous and arterial embolism: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Intracardiac masses are rare, occurring in approximately 0.1%-0.3% of patients undergoing echocardiography. They include thrombi, vegetations, and tumours. Echocardiographic identification is often challenging and can be misleading. CASE SUMMARY: We report a 72-year-old man admitted for concomitant deep vein thrombosis and a transient ischaemic stroke. Transthoracic echocardiography showed a small mass appended to the mitral valve. Transoesophageal echocardiography, performed to investigate paradoxical embolism showed a hyperechoic, mobile mitral mass attached to the leaflets clos

Right-Sided Endocarditis involving Eustachian Valve Following the Use of a Central Venous Line.

BACKGROUND Right-sided endocarditis is a well-known condition that occurs predominantly in intravenous drug users and patients with cardiovascular implantable electronic devices, central venous lines, and congenital heart disease. Most cases involve the tricuspid valve apparatus. Eustachian valve endocarditis (EVE) is a very rare and underdiagnosed condition with only a few previously reported cases. CASE REPORT We present a rare case of 2-sided infective thromboembolism from Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis involving both the eustachian and mitral valves in a 27-year-old man with mitochondr

Massive calcified tricuspid valve endocarditis in a patient with dual lumen tunneled venous catheter.

Infection is the most common cause of death in hemodialysis patients after cardiovascular complications. The long-term use of venous catheters for dialysis elevates the risk. Valvular calcification is of special concern in developing infective endocarditis and is often found in chronic dialysis patients. The right-sided endocarditis is rarely reported in the literature and may be overseen until the development of further complications. In our case tricuspid valve endocarditis, with severe insufficiency and stenosis due to a calcified laminar plate was found in a 57-year-old female patient unde

Impact of transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement for tricuspid regurgitation on hepatic, cardiac, and venous structure.

BACKGROUND: Patients with long-term tricuspid regurgitation (TR) are mostly accompanied by hepatic, cardiac, and venous remodeling. Transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR) device has emerged as a promising alternative to open-heart surgery for TR patients. No study has assessed the impact of TTVR on hepatic, cardiac, and venous remodeling. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with TR enrolled in this study underwent TTVR between October 2020 and January 2021. Liver, heart, and veins were reconstructed by three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction software at baseline and 6 months f

Pulmonary Venous Waveforms Predict Rehospitalization and Mortality After Percutaneous Mitral Valve Repair.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, the authors hypothesized that intraprocedural improvement of pulmonary venous (PV) waveforms are predictive of improved outcomes. In this report, they analyzed intraprocedural invasive and echocardiographic changes with respect to rehospitalization and mortality. BACKGROUND: The effects of hemodynamic changes during percutaneous mitral valve repair (PMVR) with MitraClip (Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, California) are incompletely characterized. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed records and intraprocedural transesophageal echocardiograms of 115 consecutiv

Retention of an autologous endothelial layer on a bioprosthetic valve for the treatment of chronic deep venous insufficiency.

PURPOSE: Percutaneous transcatheter implantation of porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) bioprosthetic valves has been reported as a treatment for chronic deep venous insufficiency (CDVI). Endothelial progenitor outgrowth cells (EOCs), isolated from whole ovine blood, were evaluated as a source of in vitro autologous seeding for SIS endothelialization. Retention of the EOC monolayer was evaluated to test the feasibility of delivering an endothelialized SIS valve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty bioprosthetic venous valves were constructed from SIS sutured onto collapsible square stent frame

Assessment of cervical venous blood flow and the craniocervical venus valve using ultrasound sonography.

Severe congestion with petechiae and/or small hemorrhages over a wide area consisting of the subcutaneous and mucous level of the head and neck is observed in most cases of strangulation and positional asphyxial death. Congestion present above the strangulation mark is accepted as a vital reaction. Although the congestion results from a disturbance of cervical venous flow, only a few reports concerning a relationship between venous flow and posture were found in the literature. We assessed the physiological situation of cervical venous return and movement of the craniocervical venous valve for

Internal jugular vein valve incompetence and intracranial venous anatomy in transient global amnesia.

BACKGROUND: Recently a causal relation between internal jugular vein valve incompetence (IJVVI) and transient global amnesia (TGA) has been suggested. IJVVI is postulated to provoke a transient mesiotemporal ischaemia by venous congestion. This mechanism requires a patent venous pathway from the affected IJV through the transverse sinus, confluens, straight sinus (SS), vein of Galen into the basal vein of Rosenthal and the internal cerebral veins. OBJECTIVE: To study IJVVI in TGA patients in relation to the intracranial venous anatomy. METHODS: IJVVI was defined if a repeated Valsalva manoeu

[Long-term results after femoral vein valve repair for chronic venous insufficiency].

OBJECTIVE: Our long-term results with anterior venous sinus plication (AVSP) for femoral vein reconstruction will be presented. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1986 and 2001 we treated 2 100 patients in our hospital for chronic venous insufficiency. In 3.3 % of the patients (n = 70) an AVSP of the target valve, which is the highest valve of the femoral vein distally of the profundal vein branch was carried out. 50 patients could be followed for 2-15 (average 4.6) years postoperatively by phlebographic control. RESULTS: Four recovery patterns after valve repair were seen on venography. The most

Chronic venous insufficiency disease. Its etiology. A new technique for vein valve transplantation.

This is a two-year study of 25 patients with venous insufficiency who were found to be in the terminal stage, referred to in this paper as chronic venous insufficiency disease (CVID). Apart from the usual signs and symptoms of venous insufficiency, the patients were found to have severe pain on weight bearing, inability to ambulate, and nonhealing lower extremity ulcers as common features that did not respond to conservative management. The most common underlying etiology was valvular incompetency. In the surgical management of these patients, at present, all the procedures described in the li

Interrelationship of mid-diastolic mitral valve motion, pulmonary venous flow, and transmitral flow.

This study offers a unifying mechanism of left ventricular filling dynamics to link the unexplained mid-diastolic motion of the mitral valve with an associated increase in transmitral flow, with the phasic character of pulmonary vein flow, and with changes in the atrioventricular pressure difference. M mode echograms of mitral valve motion and Doppler echocardiograms of mitral and pulmonary vein flow velocities were recorded in 12 healthy volunteers (heart rate = 60 +/- 9 beats/min). All echocardiograms showed an undulation in the mitral valve (L motion) at a relatively constant delay from the

Late results with synthetic valved external conduits from venous ventricle to pulmonary arteries.

Eighty-five patients operated on before January 1976 have survived at least 30 days after insertion of a valved external conduit by the venous ventricle (usually the right) and the pulmonary arteries as a part of the repair of their congenital heart disease. Follow-up information is available on 83 patients, and mean follow-up time has been 27.7 months. Seven patients have required reoperation because of obstructive complications. Actuarial analysis indicates that the proportion of patients requiring reoperation is 4.0 +/- 2.8% at 2 years, 12.9 +/- 5.5% at 3 1/2 years, and 30.4 +/- 12.1% at 5

Two-Year Results of a First-In-Human Study in Patients Surgically Implanted With a Bioprosthetic Venous Valve, the VenoValve in Patients With Severe Chronic Venous Insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE: Two-year follow-up results from a first-in-human study of patients implanted with the VenoValve are evaluated for supporting the long-term clinical safety and performance of the device. BACKGROUND: Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) involves improper functioning of lower limb vein valves and inability of these valves to move blood back towards the heart. CVI symptoms include swelling, varicose veins, pain, and leg ulcers. Currently, there is no cure for this condition and treatment options are limited. This study provides 2-year outcomes for 8 patients who were implanted with the b

Native Americans have comparable transcatheter aortic valve replacement outcomes but higher stroke and venous thromboembolism after surgical aortic valve replacement.

BACKGROUND: Racial disparities in aortic valve replacement outcomes have been established. However, the current literature lacks comprehensive studies that examine the outcomes for Native Americans, probably due to their limited population size. This study aimed to investigate whether disparities in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) also exist for outcomes among Native Americans. METHODS: Patients who underwent SAVR and TAVR were identified in National Inpatient Sample from the last quarter of 2015 to 2020. A 1:5 propensity score matchi

Three-Year Outcomes of Surgical Implantation of a Novel Bioprosthetic Valve for the Treatment of Deep Venous Reflux.

BACKGROUND: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) affecting the deep venous system is most often caused by postthrombotic syndrome (PTS), which leads to reflux, blood pooling, and venous hypertension in the lower extremities. Researchers have sought to restore deep valvular competence, with numerous attempts at primary repair and valve replacement yielding limited results. This article presents the mid-term outcomes (3 years) of the first-in-human study of the bioprosthetic VenoValve surgically implanted in patients with CVI. METHODS: The VenoValve is a 10-mm × 21-mm monocusp bioprosthetic valve

Remnants of right venous valve in utero and early postnatal life. Case report and literature review.

During fetal life the right valve of the sinus venosus directs oxygenated blood from the inferior vena cava to the left atrium through the foramen ovale, until the regression of the right valve which usually occurs within the 15th week of pregnancy. Incomplete regression of the right venous valve in varying degrees can lead to different types of remnants such as the Eustachian valve, the Chiari Network and Cor Triatriatum Dexter. Prenatal diagnosis of remnants of right venous valve has only rarely been reported in the literature. We present a case of prenatal diagnosis of Chiari Network associ

Prognosis of Heart Valve Calcification on Cardiovascular Events in Hemodialysis Patients without Central Venous Catheters.

INTRODUCTION: Heart valvular calcification (HVC) is an important predictor of cardiovascular events (CEs) and all-cause mortality in dialysis patients. Patients in the early stage of dialysis or those with central venous catheters (CVC) are also at high risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. It could be a confounding factor for the prognosis of HVC on CE. METHODS: From March 2017 to April 2022, the prognosis of HVC on CE and all-cause mortality was studied retrospectively in 158 hemodialysis (HD) patients who used arteriovenous fistulas or arteriovenous grafts as vascular access and
