Neuropsychological comparison of children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure and an IQ-matched comparison group.

An objective in current research on children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is to determine neurobehavioral profiles to identify affected individuals. Deficits observed when children with FASD are compared to typically developing controls may be confounded by lower IQ scores in the subjects with FASD. To determine if prenatal alcohol exposure is associated with neurobehavioral deficits after controlling for IQ differences, multivariate analyses were conducted to compare alcohol-exposed (ALC) subjects to a comparison group closely matched on IQ (IQC). The initial analysis included

Maternal verbal aggression in early infancy and child's internalizing symptoms: interaction by common oxytocin polymorphisms.

Genetic predisposition of social sensitivity might affect vulnerability to develop psychopathology after early life stress exposure. This study examined whether maternal verbally aggressive behavior in early infancy interacts with oxytocin polymorphisms in developing internalizing symptoms at ages 5-6 and 11-12. In the Amsterdam-Born-Children-and-their-Development (ABCD) study, a large observational, population-based birth cohort, maternal verbally aggressive behavior was assessed in the 13th postnatal week by a self-report questionnaire. Internalizing symptoms at age 5-6 were assessed by mate

[Rett syndrome: individual differences in developmental and behavioral markers and psychosocial stress].

OBJECTIVES: Rett Syndrome is a severe neurological developmental disorder caused by a genetic mutation on the long arm of the X chromosome (Xq28). This disorder is characterized by a loss of purposeful hand use, verbal language, and specific behaviors. METHODS: Data were obtained from a survey of the parents of 83 girls on pre-verbal skills (Pre-verbal Communication Schedule), behavioral characteristics and emotional expression (Rett Syndrome Behaviour Questionnaire) and on maternal psychosocial stress (Handicap-related Problems for Parents Inventory). RESULTS: There is considerable individu

Brief Report: measuring the effectiveness of teaching social thinking to children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and High Functioning Autism (HFA).

This is the first report from a large multiple baseline single-subject design study of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This brief report examines effectiveness of teaching a social cognitive (Social Thinking) approach to six males with Asperger syndrome (AS) or High Functioning Autism (HFA). Data included are restricted to pre- post-treatment comparisons of verbal and non-verbal social behaviors. Structured treatment and semi-structured generalization sessions occurred over eight weeks. Results indicated significant changes from pre- to post- measures on both verbal/nonverbal "e

Discourse-based intervention for word finding in children.

UNLABELLED: A discourse-based, contextual intervention approach for increasing children's word finding proficiency was evaluated. The clinician's role was to (a) identify overt word finding behaviors as they occurred, (2) allow their completion, and (c) provide appropriate feedback, including requests for associative information, requests for clarification, comments to confirm the appropriateness of word choices, and comments to facilitate discourse restructuring. Subjects were three 9-year-old boys with diagnosed language-learning disabilities (LLD) characterized by word finding problems. Int

A procedural distinction between elective and progressive mutism.

This paper introduces a procedural distinction between elective and progressive mutism. In elective mutism, a child elects to talk freely with intimates (e.g. family members); in progressive mutism a child does not communicate verbally with anyone (including intimates). This analysis argues that clinicians' therapeutic goals and parents' expectations of treatment outcomes for elective mutism would differ from those applied to a case of progressive mutism and that the selection of the appropriate concept (elective vs progressive) to name the type of mutism prior to intervention would enhance tr

Longitudinal Relations Between Parenting Practices and Adolescent Suicidal Ideation in a High-Risk Clinical Sample: A Moderated Mediation Model.

Parenting behaviors are associated with adolescent suicidal ideation (SI), but few studies have examined this relation longitudinally or investigated underlying mechanisms. We investigated a moderated mediation model to evaluate perceived burdensomeness as a mediator in the longitudinal relation between parenting behavior (warmth and verbal hostility) and adolescent SI. We hypothesized that this association would be particularly strong among adolescents with greater functional impairment. The sample included 147 adolescents (Mage = 14.9, Age Range = 12-18 years, 76.2% female) and a primary car

Emotionality of mental imagery and its effect on choice behavior.

Imagining our behaviors and thereby anticipating their rewarding or unrewarding emotional consequences may motivate our choice behavior. This has great potential for clinical interventions aiming to motivate the engagement in adaptive behaviors. We investigated the difference in emotionality between mental imagery and verbal thought and its effect on subsequent choice behavior using a within-subject experimental design with pupil dilation as a measure of emotional arousal. Adults from the general population (N = 40) first imagined and constructed sentences concerning icon-word pairs yielding a

Predictive validity of the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY) during residential treatment.

This prospective study examines the predictive validity of the Dutch version of the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY) by examining relationships between SAVRY scores and various types of disruptive behavior during residential treatment. The SAVRY, a risk assessment instrument, was coded for 66 male adolescents on the basis of file information and interviews. The adolescents were referred to Rentray, a juvenile correctional and treatment facility, by the Dutch juvenile courts because of severe behavioral problems or serious offenses. Institutional infractions were retrieve

Abuse of older Chinese with dementia by family caregivers: an inquiry into the role of caregiver burden.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the prevalence and risk factors for elder abuse in older Chinese with dementia by their family caregivers in Hong Kong. METHODS: A sample of 122 family caregivers of older persons with dementia was conveniently recruited from local community centers for the elderly. Participants provided information on their demographic characteristics, care recipients' physical functioning and agitated behavior, caregiver burden, and whether they had directed any abusive behavior at the care recipients in the previous month. RESULTS: Sixty-two and 18 per cent of the caregivers

Agitation in elderly persons: an integrative report of findings in a nursing home.

Agitated behaviors in the nursing home pose a major problem for caregivers. Our data showed that the three syndromes of agitation--aggressive behaviors, physically nonaggressive behaviors, and verbally agitated behaviors--are differentially related to medical and psychosocial variables. Physically nonaggressive behaviors may be adaptive for a resident who presents a deteriorated stage of dementia, since these behaviors offer stimulation and exercise. Verbally agitated behaviors may be a form of help-seeking behavior for residents with physical disease and depressed affect. Aggressive behaviors

Theory of mind predominantly associated with the quality, not quantity, of pretend play in children with autism spectrum disorder.

This study aimed to clarify the relationships between theory of mind and pretend play in children with autism spectrum disorder, using refined assessments of theory of mind and pretend play while controlling for autistic behaviors and verbal comprehension. A total of 92 children with autism spectrum disorder aged 4-10 years were enrolled. In two visits, the children were assessed with the Theory of Mind Task Battery, the Child-Initiated Pretend Play Assessment, the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, and the Verbal Comprehension Index of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales, respectively, for their the

Self-directed and other-directed aggressive behavior in a forensic sample.

Fifty habitually aggressive men were assessed for self-directed aggressive behavior (SDAB) and other-directed aggressive behavior (QDAB). Subjects displaying SDAB were compared with subjects exhibiting exclusively ODAB. The former were found to engage in more frequent acts of verbal aggression, physical aggression against objects, and physical aggression against others, as well as in more severe acts of verbal aggression and physical aggression against others. They were also more likely to receive diagnoses of mental retardation, organic personality disorder, intermittent explosive disorder, o

Rejection Sensitivity, Self-Compassion, and Aggressive Behavior: The Role of Borderline Features as a Mediator.

This study used mediation analyses to examine the assumption that the presence of borderline personality features mediates the relationship between rejection sensitivity (RS), self-compassion, and aggressive behavior. Sixty adults consisting of 31 participants diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and 29 participants with no diagnosis of borderline personality disorder were assessed for RS, self-compassion, aggressive behavior, and borderline personality features. Mediation was found for the total aggression score, anger score, and hostility score regarding both self-compassion and RS

Validation and assessment of a conversational interaction intervention.

Multiple measures of social behavior were obtained in order to (a) evaluate the effects of a systematic replication of a conversational interaction intervention, (b) identify critical target behaviors, (c) select participants likely to benefit from intervention, and (d) assess the social and experimental validity of the intervention. Combined measures (e.g., performance screening, assessing students' goals, behavioral ratings) corroborated the decision to introduce multiple-exemplar, self-instructional training to 4 students with moderate mental retardation who were observed to have limited so

Nonverbal learning disability, school behavior, and dyslexia.

The aims of the study were to investigate whether children showing a low nonverbal/high verbal (LNV) WISC-R profile are more likely to exhibit behaviors conducive to school failure than children with a low verbal/high nonverbal (LV) profile, and to examine the relationships among these behaviors, the LNV/LV profiles, and reading ability. The 65 subjects included 27 LNV and 38 LV children, aged 5 to 11 years. Results confirmed earlier findings (Badian 1986) that LNV children are perceived by their teachers as significantly poorer than LV children in many behaviors associated with school success

Training Programs for Dementia Care Staff and Aggression in Nursing Homes: Secondary Analysis of a Cross-Sectional Online Survey.

BACKGROUND: Training programs help dementia care staff handle residents' behavioral symptoms in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. However, it is unclear how feeling well-prepared from such training relates to experiences of physical and verbal aggression from residents. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether perceived training preparedness was related to experiences of physical and verbal aggression from residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities using data from a large, nationally representative dementia care workforce sample.
