Melanopsin-mediated optical entrainment regulates circadian rhythms in vertebrates.

Melanopsin (OPN4) is a light-sensitive protein that plays a vital role in the regulation of circadian rhythms and other nonvisual functions. Current research on OPN4 has focused on mammals; more evidence is needed from non-mammalian vertebrates to fully assess the significance of the non-visual photosensitization of OPN4 for circadian rhythm regulation. There are species differences in the regulatory mechanisms of OPN4 for vertebrate circadian rhythms, which may be due to the differences in the cutting variants, tissue localization, and photosensitive activation pathway of OPN4. We here summar

Molecular specification of facial branchial motor neurons in vertebrates.

Orofacial muscles are critical for life-sustaining behaviors, such as feeding and breathing. Centuries of work by neuroanatomists and surgeons resulted in the mapping of bulbar motor neurons in the brainstem and the course of the cranial nerves that carry their axons. Despite the sophisticated understanding of the anatomy of the region, the molecular mechanisms that dictate the development and maturation of facial motor neurons remain poorly understood. This fundamental problem has been recently revisited by physiologists with novel techniques of studying the rhythmic contraction of orofacial

Chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) associated with vertebrates in Mexico.

The chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Amblycera and Ischnocera) of Mexico have been little studied and many publications include isolated records. This paper summarizes current knowledge of chewing lice recorded from Mexico resulting from an exhaustive search of the literature published from 1866 to 2017. We found 342 louse species associated with 206 bird and 28 mammal species. As a result, we provide a checklist of the chewing lice recorded from Mexico, including a host-parasite list and their geographical distribution within the country.

A revised metric for quantifying body shape in vertebrates.

Vertebrates exhibit tremendous diversity in body shape, though quantifying this variation has been challenging. In the past, researchers have used simplified metrics that either describe overall shape but reveal little about its anatomical basis or that characterize only a subset of the morphological features that contribute to shape variation. Here, we present a revised metric of body shape, the vertebrate shape index (VSI), which combines the four primary morphological components that lead to shape diversity in vertebrates: head shape, length of the second major body axis (depth or width), a

Evolutionary patterns of cranial nerve efferent nuclei in vertebrates.

All vertebrates have a similar series of rhombomeric hindbrain segments within which cranial nerve efferent nuclei are distributed in a similar rostrocaudal sequence. The registration between these two morphological patterns is reviewed here to highlight the conserved vs. variable aspects of hindbrain organization contributing to diversification of efferent sub-nuclei. Recent studies of segmental origins and migrations of branchiomotor, visceromotor and octavolateral efferent neurons revealed more segmental similarities than differences among vertebrates. Nonetheless, discrete variations exist

Visual accommodation in vertebrates: mechanisms, physiological response and stimuli.

The mechanism and stimulation of the accommodative reflex in vertebrate eyes are reviewed. Except for lampreys, accommodation is brought about by intraocular muscles that mediate either a displacement or deformation of the lens, a change of the corneal radius of curvature or a combination of these mechanisms. Elasmobranchs have little accommodation and are emmetropic in water rather than hyperopic as commonly stated. Accommodation in teleosts and amphibians is well understood and achieved by lens displacement. The accommodative mechanism of amniotes is of considerable diversity and reflects di

Is nitrate an ecologically relevant endocrine disruptor in vertebrates?

The last three decades have brought clear recognition that many populations of animals are experiencing severe declines or local and global extinctions. Many examples have become common knowledge to the general public, such as worldwide declines in amphibian populations and extensive loss of coral reefs. The mechanisms underlying these and other changes are poorly understood. However, a growing literature indicates that a wide array of chemical contaminants have the potential to disrupt normal cell-to-cell signaling mechanisms. A global pollutant of most aquatic systems, nitrate has the potent

Experimental studies of St. Louis encephalitis virus in vertebrates.

Serologically negative birds and mammals of species, known from other studies to be exposed naturally to St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus in Memphis, Tennessee, and other selected species were inoculated experimentally with strains of SLE virus to determine their potential as natural hosts. Mosquitoes (Culex sp.) were allowed to feed on some of the inoculated vertebrate species, held for 14 days, and tested for SLE infection. The cardinals (Richmondena cardinalis), robins (Turdus migratorius), and baby chicks (Gallus gallus) all became viremic; 97% of the bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) and

The terminal nerve: a new chemosensory system in vertebrates?

Ganglion cells of the terminal nerve in goldfish are located in the olfactory nerve and bulb and send peripheral processes into the olfactory epithelium and central processes to the supracommissural nuclei of the telencephalon as well as to the retina. Correlations between terminal nerve projections and neurobehavioral studies suggest that the terminal nerve mediates responses to sex pheromones.

Development, structure and composition of the otoliths in vertebrates.

The vertebrate otoliths are biologically-altered crystals composed of an organic matrix and inorganic constituents. The organic component contains proteins and an acidic mucosubstance with sulphuric and carboxylic groups. The inorganic component of the otoliths in gnathostome vertebrates is almost always composed of polymorphs of calcium carbonate, i.e. calcite, aragonite and rarely, vaterite. This work reviews mainly the morphological aspects (by scanning electron microscopy), and phenomena of seeding and of growth of otolithic biocrystals. Factors essential for seeding and growth of otolithi

Enzymic oxidation of some alkylbenzenes in insects and vertebrates.

1. Oxidation rates of alkylbenzenes have been measured in 10000g supernatants of vertebrate livers, locust fat bodies and housefly abdomens. 2. Activity per g. of insect was greater in fly than locust preparations but both were of the same order as a range of vertebrate species. 3. Methyl groups of toluene and p-nitrotoluene were oxidized more rapidly than the side chains of higher homologues. 4. In the higher homologues hydroxylation occurred most readily at the alpha-methylene group and less readily at penultimate methylene and terminal methyl groups. 5. Oxidations in both vertebrates and in

Receptor-Mediated and Receptor-Independent Actions of Melatonin in Vertebrates.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an indolamine that is synthesized from tryptophan in the pineal glands of vertebrates through four enzymatic reactions. Melatonin is a quite unique bioactive substance, characterized by a combination of both receptor-mediated and receptor-independent actions, which promote the diverse effects of melatonin. One of the main functions of melatonin, via its membrane receptors, is to regulate the circadian or seasonal rhythm. In mammals, light information, which controls melatonin synthesis, is received in the eye, and transmitted to the pineal gland, via

Organophosphate-Pesticide-Mediated Immune Response Modulation in Invertebrates and Vertebrates.

Organophosphate pesticides (OPs) have greatly facilitated food production worldwide, and their use is not limited to agriculture and the control of pests and disease vectors. However, these substances can directly affect the immune response of non-target organisms. In this sense, exposure to OPs can have negative effects on innate and adaptive immunity, promoting deregulation in humoral and cellular processes such as phagocytosis, cytokine expression, antibody production, cell proliferation, and differentiation, which are crucial mechanisms for host defense against external agents. This review

Astrocytic contribution to glutamate-related central respiratory chemoreception in vertebrates.

Central respiratory chemoreceptors play a key role in the respiratory homeostasis by sensing CO2 and H+ in brain and activating the respiratory neural network. This ability of specific brain regions to respond to acidosis and hypercapnia is based on neuronal and glial mechanisms. Several decades ago, glutamatergic transmission was proposed to be involved as a main mechanism in central chemoreception. However, a complete identification of mechanism has been elusive. At the rostral medulla, chemosensitive neurons of the retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) are glutamatergic and they are stimulated by AT

Serotonergic Modulation of Locomotor Activity From Basal Vertebrates to Mammals.

During the last 50 years, the serotonergic (5-HT) system was reported to exert a complex modulation of locomotor activity. Here, we focus on two key factors that likely contribute to such complexity. First, locomotion is modulated directly and indirectly by 5-HT neurons. The locomotor circuitry is directly innervated by 5-HT neurons in the caudal brainstem and spinal cord. Also, indirect control of locomotor activity results from ascending projections of 5-HT cells in the rostral brainstem that innervate multiple brain centers involved in motor action planning. Second, each approach used to ma

Diversity and Community Composition of Vertebrates in Desert River Habitats.

Animal species are seldom distributed evenly at either local or larger spatial scales, and instead tend to aggregate in sites that meet their resource requirements and maximise fitness. This tendency is likely to be especially marked in arid regions where species could be expected to concentrate at resource-rich oases. In this study, we first test the hypothesis that productive riparian sites in arid Australia support higher vertebrate diversity than other desert habitats, and then elucidate the habitats selected by different species. We addressed the first aim by examining the diversity and c

Pontine influences on respiratory control in ectothermic and heterothermic vertebrates.

Respiratory rhythm generators appear both evolutionarily and developmentally as paired segmental rhythm generators in the reticular formation, associated with the motor nuclei of cranial nerves V, VII, IX, X, and XII. Those associated with the Vth and VIIth motor nuclei are "pontine" in origin and in fishes that employ a buccal suction/force pump for breathing the primary pair of respiratory rhythm generators are associated with the trigeminal nuclei. In amphibians, while the basic respiratory pump remains the same, the dominant site of respiratory rhythm generation has been assumed by the fac
