Three-dimensional mapping of cortical bone thickness in subjects with different vertical facial dimensions.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine differences in cortical bone thickness among subjects with different vertical facial dimensions using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: From 114 pre-treatment CBCT scans, 48 scans were selected to be included in the study. CBCT-synthesized lateral cephalograms were used to categorize subjects into three groups based on their vertical skeletal pattern. Cortical bone thickness (CBT) at two vertical levels (4 and 7 mm) from the alveolar crest were measured in the entire tooth-bearing region in the maxilla and mandible. RESULTS:

Evaluation of Intercondylar Distance as a Predictor of Vertical Dimension in Edentulous Patients: A Cross-sectional Comparative Study.

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of intercondylar distance (ICD) measurement in determining the vertical dimension of occlusion in edentulous patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The first part of the study included 250 dentulous individuals visiting the departmental OPD and the students of the institute (aged 18-40 years) of both genders. Intercondylar distance was measured at the Denar reference point, and occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) was measured between the subnasion and the gnathion during maximum intercuspation. A regression equation was formulated based on the ICD-O

The association between dental wear and reduced vertical dimension of the face: a morphologic study on human skulls.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between dental wear and facial morphology, with particular reference to the occlusal vertical dimension, in modern human skulls. DESIGN: One hundred and three skulls (52 men and 51 women) between the ages of 20 and 50+ years old were studied. The selected skulls were from a modern period (the 17th and the 18th centuries) and included at least one entire condyle and had at least 3 posterior teeth (premolar or molar) in each quadrant to allow for dental articulation. Occlusal wear was evaluated using ordinal scale (0-4) and vertic

Reliability and comparison of two facial measurements to detect changes of occlusal vertical dimension in complete denture wearers.

BACKGROUND: Facial measurements are frequently used to determine OVD. However, the reliability of neither the method nor the chosen landmarks has been cleared yet. OBJECTIVE: This study compares the reliability of two facial measurements, subnasal (SN) to chin (C) and tip of the nose (TN) to C, for determining occlusal vertical dimension (OVD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty edentulous subjects with adequate neuromuscular co-ordination, without signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders and who had been wearing complete dentures for at least 5years were enrolled. Maxillary sinus dimensions in skeletal class II population with different vertical skeletal patterns.

OBJECTIVES: The location of the maxillary sinus significantly affects the orthodontic treatment, particularly when temporary anchorage devices (TADs) are taking place. The current study aims to evaluate the maxillary sinus size and location in a skeletal class II population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pre-orthodontic treatment CBCT images of the skeletal class II population were selected. The sinus's volumetric size, height, width, and depth were measured and compared among different skeletal vertical patterns and between genders. In addition, the height and width of the alveolar bone surroun

Prototyping of increased vertical dimension of occlusion using an existing removable partial denture and composite resin: a case report.

Full-mouth rehabilitation can be challenging due to the complexity of restoring the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) and replacing missing teeth. In partially edentulous patients, the concept of a bonded composite resin prototype for increasing the VDO has previously been applied through the use of an overlay removable partial denture (RPD) with acrylic resin covering the existing dentition. Unfortunately, this type of prosthesis does not always accurately model the function and phonetics intended for the definitive prostheses, and the esthetic result often is less than ideal. It would be

Two-year observation of the occlusal vertical dimension after bite raising via cone-beam computerized tomography: A preliminary study.

Variation of the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) has been discussed empirically for decades, but it has not been thoroughly explored with experimental data. In the present study, cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) of six selected patients was conducted to evaluate the bones of the lower facial structures. The anterior lower facial heights (ALFHs), alveolar process heights (APHs), vertical facial pattern (VFP), occluding dentition height (ODH) and condyle space (CS), which were evaluated by three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) lateral cephalometry derived from CBCT, were comp

Temporal change in the occlusal vertical dimension and its involvement in modulation of jaw movement in bite-reduced animals.

The occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) in guinea pigs is maintained by tooth eruption and grinding. It has been reported that the experimentally raised OVD recovers to the innate OVD within a few days in guinea pigs. However, the mechanisms underlying OVD adjustment are not entirely understood. This study thus aimed to clarify whether the experimentally reduced OVD would recover. Bite-reduced guinea pigs were created by applying bilateral intermaxillary elastics for 10 days. Guinea pigs without elastics were used as a control. The OVD after removal of the elastics in the experimental group was

The benthic-pelagic continuum: Age class and sex differences in the use of the vertical dimension by a rare pinniped.

Sea lions as a group, display strong site fidelity, and varying degrees of vulnerability to environmental change, disease and fisheries interactions. One of the rarest pinnipeds, the New Zealand sea lion (NZSL, Phocarctos hookeri) has a very restricted breeding range. At Campbell Island/Motu Ihupuku, one of the two primary breeding sites, at-sea foraging behaviour is unknown. We hypothesised that NZSL of various sex and age classes would utilise the water column differently due to differing physiological constraints and therefore have different accessibility to prey resources. We tested whethe
