Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used to identify parts of the presumptive neural pathway for gill cover erection, a behavioral display pattern performed by Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) during aggressive interactions. Motor, motor integration and sensory areas were identified in the medulla and mesencephalon. Motor neurons of the dilator operculi muscle, the effector muscle for gill cover erection, are located in the lateral and medial parts of the caudal trigeminal motor nucleus. Iontophoretic injections of HRP into the lateral trigeminal motor nucleus resulted in labeled cell bodi

An organism's sense of direction depends on vestibular input to thalamic and forebrain structures. The supragenual nucleus (SGN) sits at a prime location in the network to convey vestibular signals forward to update the representation of head direction (HD) with ongoing head movement. The SGN receives anatomical projections from the medial vestibular nuclei and nucleus prepositus hypoglossi and prior reports have suggested that the SGN sends projections to both the dorsal tegmental nucleus (DTN) and lateral mammillary nucleus (LMN), two midbrain nuclei crucial in generating a representation of

Protein kinase C (PCK) is a family of isoforms that are implicated in subcellular signal transduction. The authors investigated the distribution of several PKC isoforms (PKC-alpha, PKC-beta, PKC-gamma, PKC-delta, and PKC-epsilon) within major cerebellar cell types as well as cerebellar projection target neurons, including Purkinje neurons, cerebellar nuclear neurons, and secondary vestibular neurons. PKC-alpha, PKC-beta, PKC-gamma, PKC-delta, and PKC-epsilon are found within the cerebellum. Of these isoforms, PKC-gamma and PKC-delta are highly expressed in Purkinje cells. PKC-gamma is expresse

Space flight produces profound changes of neuronal activity in the mammalian vestibular and reticular systems, affecting postural and motor functions. These changes are compensated over time by plastic alterations in the brain. Immediate early genes (IEGs) are useful indicators of both activity changes and neuronal plasticity. We studied the expression of two IEG protein products [Fos and Fos-related antigens (FRAs)] with different cell persistence times (hours and days, respectively) to identify brainstem vestibular and reticular structures involved in adaptation to microgravity and readaptat

Vagal and aortic afferent projections to the nodulus and uvula of the cerebellar vermis were examined in anesthetized and paralysed rabbits. Electrical stimulations of vagal and aortic nerves at a frequency of 1/s produced field potentials in the lateral cortical region of the contralateral nodulus-uvula with a latency of 6.5-19 ms. These potentials were negative in the molecular layer and positive in the granular layer. At a higher stimulation rate (30/s), these potentials were reduced by 60-65% of the control value. These results indicate that the lateral cortical region of the nodulus-uvula

The localization of the olivo-cerebellar fibers in the inferior cerebellar peduncle was examined in a patient who showed severe degeneration of the left olivary nucleus due to an old hemorrhagic infarct in the contralateral cerebellum. Other precerebellar nuclei which send their cerebellipetal axons to the inferior cerebellar peduncle, such as the external cuneate nucleus, the lateral reticular nucleus and the arcuate nucleus, were normally preserved. The dorsal spino-cerebellar tract and the vestibular nuclei, together with the juxtarestiform body were also intact. Degeneration of the inferio

The vestibular system was electrically stimulated in cats anesthetized with ketamine. Peripheral stimulation by an electrode positioned in the vestibule evoked torsional contralateral eye deviations and an electromyogram (EMG) response in a contralateral dorsal neck extensor. Consistently associated with this well documented vestibular pattern was an EMG response in tongue protrusive muscles, at a latency of 13 +/- 5 (means +/- SD) ms. Stimulation in a specific part of the rostroventral lateral vestibular nucleus elicited the same combination of responses: torsional contralateral eye deviation

Previous electrophysiological studies in pigeons have shown that the complex spike activity of Purkinje cells in the medial vestibulocerebellum (nodulus and ventral uvula) is modulated by patterns of optic flow that result from self-translation along a particular axis in three-dimensional space. There are four response types based on the axis of preferred translational optic flow. By using a three axis system, where +X, +Y, and +Z represent rightward, upward, and forward self-motion, respectively, the four cell types are t(+Y), t(-Y), t(-X-Z), and t(-X+Z), with the assumption of recording from

In acute experiments in rabbits the influence of stimulation of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus on the activity of neurons of vestibular Deiters' nucleus was studied under conditions of 15-day exposure to vibration (60 Hz, 0.8 mm, 3 h daily). The mechanisms are discussed which underlie the observed phenomena.

Central distribution of efferent and afferent components of the glossopharyngeal (IX) nerve in the cat was studied by applying horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the lesser petrosal nerve (LPN), carotid sinus nerve (CSN) or cervical trunk (CT) distal to the branching point of the CSN. After applying HRP to the LPN or CT, HRP-labeled neurons were distributed ipsilaterally in the lateral regions of the reticular formation from the caudalmost levels of the facial nerve genu to the rostral levels of the solitary nucleus. HRP-labeled axons of these neurons ran dorsomedially and then medially along the

The vestibular system is involved in maintaining stable blood pressure and respiration during changes in posture and is essential for eliciting motion sickness-related vomiting. Because the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) participates in the regulation of sympathetic and inspiratory outflow and the triggering of emesis, we tested the hypothesis that this region receives vestibular inputs in cats. In one set of experiments, microinjections of the tracer Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin into the medial and inferior vestibular nuclei labeled projections to the middle and lateral regions of the

Mapping with local lesions, electrical or chemical stimulation, or recording evoked field potentials or unit spikes revealed localized representations of cardiovascular functions in the cerebellum. In this review, which is based on literatures in the field (including our own publications), I propose that the cerebellum contains five distinct modules (cerebellar corticonuclear microcomplexes) dedicated to cardiovascular control. First, a discrete rostral portion of the fastigial nucleus and the overlying medial portion of the anterior vermis (lobules I, II and III) conjointly form a module that

In decerebrate unanesthetized rabbits, electrical stimulation of the lateral nodulus-uvula in the cerebellar vermal cortex evoked an increase in renal sympathetic nerve activity, an increase in blood pressure and a decrease in renal arterial blood flow, which were all in contrast to the effects reported previously in the anesthetized rabbits. In order to identify the pathway mediating these responses, we investigated the Purkinje cell projection from the lateral nodulus-uvula using both anterograde (biotinylated dextran amine, BDA) and retrograde (horseradish peroxidase, HRP) tracing methods i

The vestibular system consisting of vestibular ganglion, nerve and inferior, medial, lateral and superior nuclei and fastigial nucleus, cerebellar vermis, flocculus and hemisphere in 14 autopsy cases of methyl mercury intoxication in Niigata and 12 age-matched controls were examined neuropathologically. The findings were evaluated semiquantitatively, that is, -; normal, +/-; gliosis alone, +; loss of neurons or myelinated fibers less than about 40%, ++; loss of neurons from about 41 to 80%, ; loss of neurons more than about 81%. The results were compared to the records of the equilibrium funct

Chronic thiamine deprivation in the rat leads to ataxia, loss of righting reflex and neuropathological damage to lateral vestibular nucleus. Before onset of neurological symptoms, transketolase (TK) activities were found to be selectively reduced by 25% in lateral vestibular nucleus and surrounding pons. Further progression of thiamine deprivation resulted in a generalized reduction in TK activity. Measurement of enzyme activity in the presence of added TPP cofactor in vitro did not lead to normalisation of enzyme activities suggesting loss of apoenzyme. Administration of thiamine to symptomat

The effects of hypergravity on the gene expression of the hypothalamic feeding-related neuropeptides in sham-operated (Sham) and vestibular-lesioned (VL) mice were examined by in situ hybridization histochemistry. Corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the paraventricular nucleus was increased significantly in Sham but not in VL mice after 3 days of exposure to a 2 g environment compared with a 1 g environment. Significant decreases in pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript and significant increases in neuropeptide Y, agouti-related protein in the arcu

The distribution of cerebellar corticonuclear and corticovestibular fibers from the anterior lobe of the North American opossum, Didelphis virginiana, was studied using the Fink and Heimer ('67) technique. Corticonuclear fibers from medial areas of anterior lobe project into the medial cerebellar nucleus (NM) in a topographically organized manner. Fibers from lobules II and III enter rostral and rostrodorsal NM, while those from lobules IV and V terminate in progressively more caudal parts of the nucleus. Collectively the terminal fields in NM for axons from lobules II-V occupy about the rostr

We examined changes in 5-hydroxytriptamine (5-HT, serotonin) neurons in pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency in mice immunohistochemically. Extensive decreases in the densities of 5-HT-immunoreactive fibers were detected in the lateral septal nucleus, the thalamus, the medial mammillary nucleus, the dorsal and the median raphe nuclei, the raphe obscurus nucleus, the tegmental area, the cerebellum and the vestibular nucleus, though only a small decrease was detected in the inferior colliculus. Most remarkably, degenerative winding fibers were detected between the deep mesencephalic nucleus

The vestibular system is vital for proper balance perception, and its dysfunction contributes significantly to fall-related injuries, especially in the elderly. Vestibular ganglion neurons innervate vestibular hair cells at the periphery and vestibular nuclei and the uvula and nodule of the cerebellum centrally. During aging, these vestibular ganglion neurons degenerate, impairing vestibular function. A complete understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in neurosensory cell survival in the vestibular system is unknown. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is specifically required

We describe a case of an adult-onset progressive dystonia with external ophthalmoplegia, occurring in a black man without a family history of neurologic disorders. Neuropathologic examination demonstrated neuronal loss and gliosis in the anterior horn and Clarke's column in the spinal cord, nuclei of cranial nerves III, VI, X, and XII, vestibular complex, lateral cuneate nucleus, lower pontine tegmentum, red nucleus, substantia nigra, and dentate nucleus. The cerebral cortex, corpus striatum, basis pontis, inferior olives, and cerebellum were spared. The clinical and pathologic findings closel
