The influence of trichloroethylene and related drugs on the vestibular system.

A previously described experimental model for studying the effect of industrial solvents on the vestibular system of rabbits has been applied to trichloroethylene. Estimation of trichloroethylene and its metabolites in blood and cerebrospinal fluid was performed by gas chromatography. Vestibular function was studied by recording nystagmus, induced by positional changes or accelerated rotation. At blood levels of trichloroethylene above 30 p.p.m. "positional nystagmus" develops. Two metabolites of trichloroethylene, chloral hydrate and trichloroethanol, which are known as central nervous system

Vestibular System and Hearing Involvement in Patients with Turner Syndrome.

Background: Turner syndrome is a genotypic disorder in females characterized by the total or partial absence of an X chromosome. While cardiovascular issues and sensorineural hearing loss are well-documented, vestibular system involvement remains understudied. This study aims to examine vestibular system involvement in patients with Turner syndrome and assess if they exhibit a higher prevalence of peripheral vestibular pathology compared to the general population. Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted with 21 Turner syndrome patients and 21 age-matched controls. Evaluations

Auditory and vestibular system findings in patients with vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia.

Impairment of the auditory-vestibular system has been reported in patients with vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD), but little is known about the underlying cause of the symptoms. Auditory testing (pure tone audiometry, auditory brain stem response and stapedius reflex) and vestibular tests (assessment of nystagmus, eye tracking tests, caloric test and rotational test) were performed in 23 patients with auditory-vestibular symptoms and/or cranial nerve impairment associated with VBD. Specific evidence of auditory and/or vestibular system impairment was observed in 19 cases (83%). Among patie

Vestibular modulation of the septo-hippocampal cholinergic system of rats.

Effects of vestibular stimulation on the in vivo release of hypothalamic histamine and hippocampal acetylcholine (ACh) were investigated in urethan-anesthetized rats, using a brain microdialysis method. Changes in glutamate concentration in the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) were also monitored by a microbiosensor technique using a glutamate oxidase-embodied platinum electrode. Caloric stimulation with hot water increased the glutamate release in the MVN, while that with ice water decreased it. It is evidenced that glutamate is a neurotransmitter between afferent vestibular nerve and the MVN.

Internal auditory canal vascular loops: audiometric and vestibular system findings.

Prominent loops of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery in the cerebellopontine angle are found frequently during anatomic studies of this region. These vascular loops are suspected of causing hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo, and surgery has been advocated to separate the vascular loop from the eighth cranial nerve. Previous reports have described pathologic anatomy, surgical approaches, and results of treatment. In this study, we report the results of a uniform battery of audiometric and vestibular system test results administered to fifteen patients with prominent vascular loops in th

Permanent effects of low frequency vibration on the vestibular system.

Among 49 male workers, mean age 30 years, who had been working in conditions of extreme noise and vibration for between 6 months and 10 years vestibular disturbances could be shown (in the form of spontaneous nystagmus, lowered caloric excitability, or pathology in rotatory tests) in as high as 44.9%. The lesions were believed to have arisen in the peripheral vestibular organ as a consequence of the low frequency vibration.

Virtual reality stimulation modulates saccular activity and vestibular system responses.

PURPOSE: The saccule detects vertical linear head movements and contributes to postural control by transmitting sensory information to the central nervous system. However, little is known about how visual cues and the resulting vestibular-ocular reflex affect vestibular responses. This study investigated changes in saccule-related vestibulospinal reflex responses using visually simulated vertical acceleration in a virtual reality (VR) environment. METHODS: The study involved 32 healthy individuals (16 males and 16 females), aged between 18 and 40 years (mean age: 28.56 ± 9.02 years). All part

Scoring System Assessing Risks of Growth in Sporadic Vestibular Schwannoma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Surveillance studies offer sparse knowledge of predictors of future growth in sporadic vestibular schwannomas (VS).Our aim was identification of these risk factors. We propose a scoring system to estimate the risk of growth in sporadic vestibular schwannoma. METHODS: This retrospective study is based on the demographic and radiological data of 615 adult patients under the surveillance for single VS in our center. Univariate analysis, multivariate regression, and Kaplan-Meier analysis were used when appropriate. The regression coefficient-based "VS score" was calcula

[Are we sectioning the cochlear efferent system during vestibular neurotomy?].

INTRODUCTION: In addition to sensory neurons which transmit information from the inner ear to the brain, there is a system of efferent feedback fibers, called the olivocochlear system, carrying signals from the brain to the ear. Over the past half-century, the efferent system has been extensively studied in animals and results provided theories as to the functional significance of these efferents: to improve signal-to-noise ratio in the auditory periphery, to mediate selective attention, and to protect the inner ear from acoustic overexposure. The results of several studies conducted in man re

Clinical evidence that the vestibular system participates in autonomic control.

The vestibular system, including both the peripheral vestibular system, that is, the labyrinth, and the central vestibular system, is known to influence autonomic function in several ways that have clinical implications. This paper discusses evidence for vestibular influences on autonomic control from normal human subjects, evidence for vestibular influences on autonomic control from patients, clinical implications of vestibulo-autonomic regulation, and speculations regarding possible clinical implications of vestibulo-autonomic control. Situations that provoke vestibular-induced autonomic res

Vestibular nucleus projections to the parabrachial nucleus in rabbits: implications for vestibular influences on the autonomic nervous system.

Acute vestibular dysfunction and motion sickness are characterized by autonomic effects such as pallor, nausea, and vomiting. Previous anatomic and physiologic studies suggest that one potential mediator of these effects may be light, direct vestibular nuclear projections to the nucleus tractus solitarius and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve. This study presents evidence for relatively dense, direct projections from the vestibular nuclei to the parabrachial nucleus. Male albino rabbits received injections of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin into the vestibular nuclei. The tracer w

Evaluation of the Vestibular System by Masseter Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a common sleep disorder characterized by respiratory arrests and is thought to affect vestibular system functions. In recent years, the Masseter VEMP test has become an alternative method for evaluating vestibular functions. This study aimed to assess the vestibular system through an mVEMP test in OSAS patients and determine the effects of the disease on vestibular functions. METHODS: This prospective study included 36 patients (72 ears) and 36 healthy controls (72 ears) diagnosed with OSAS. All participants underwent the mVEMP test to eva

Expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide in efferent vestibular system and vestibular nucleus in rats with motion sickness.

UNLABELLED: Motion sickness presents a challenge due to its high incidence and unknown pathogenesis although it is a known fact that a functioning vestibular system is essential for the perception of motion sickness. Recent studies show that the efferent vestibular neurons contain calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). It is a possibility that the CGRP immunoreactivity (CGRPi) fibers of the efferent vestibular system modulate primary afferent input into the central nervous system; thus, making it likely that CGRP plays a key role in motion sickness. To elucidate the relationship between motio

Cortical representation of the vestibular system as evidenced by brain electrical activity mapping of vestibular late evoked potentials.

We examined the space and temporal distributions of the rotatory evoked brain electrical activity patterns (brain electrical activity mapping of vestibular evoked potentials [VestEP]) in humans. We performed a longitudinal scalp line analysis, transversal line analysis, and clockwise/counterclockwise rotation analysis of the VestEP principal components in 75 healthy persons aged 22 to 30 years (mean: 25.8). We found that the shortest VestEP latencies and the highest amplitudes were registered in a relatively distinct cortical area that is covered by the transversal electrode line T3-C3-Cz-C4-T

Parallel auditory vestibular evoked neurogenic and myogenic potential results in a case of peripheral vestibular dysfunction, showing that the former originates from the vestibular system.

PURPOSE: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) uses high intensity clicks with recording from the tonically active sternocleidomastoid muscle, taking advantage of the close proximity of the saccule to the oval window. Our group has used the same stimulus to record Vestibular Evoked Neurogenic Potentials (VENPs) directly from the brain. VEMPs are now regarded the electrophysiological gold standard in peripheral vestibular system examination. We present a case of peripheral vestibular dysfunction to show that both VEMPs and VENPs provide similar results during recovery. METHODS: A case
