Peripheral vestibular syndrome in the dog: a review of 83 cases.

Clinical data and follow-up evaluations of 83 cases of peripheral vestibular syndrome in the dog were reviewed. The absence of physical abnormalities of the tympanic membrane and absence of radiographic changes within the tympanic bulla or petrous temporal bone were the criteria used to make the diagnosis of idiopathic benign vestibular disease. When grouped according to the cause of the syndrome, most of the dogs had been diagnosed as having either otitis media/interna (49%) or idiopathic benign vestibular disease (39%). Clinical evidence suggested that most of the cases of otitis media/inter

[Work disability in peripheral vestibular disorders].

The circumstances prevalent in each particular line of work must be taken into consideration when examining for occupational disability. Peripheral vestibular disorders can be a source of danger to the patient himself and to those in his working environment, e.g. in traffic or on building sites. Some criteria for judgement on incapacity as related to the most important peripheral disorders are proposed. A further problem involves those cases with complaints of vertigo but whose responses to clinical testing appear normal. Such patients require a clear decision as to whether they are to be clas

[These vestibular problems in the absence of gravity...].

For a few years, more and more astronauts complain to endure space motion sickness during the two or three first days of their mission. This is due to the repetition of shifting and sudden head movements, which becomes possible by the increasing of volume of the new space stations. To avoid that payload specialists onboard be obliged to renounce to conduct planned experiments, it has been necessary to find effective solutions to detect by ground based tests the candidates sensitive to space motion sickness and perfect therapeutic means able to avoid unexpected arrival of these symptoms, and ev

Cochleo-vestibular disturbances in diving.

Insidious development of high-tone sensorineural hearing loss may be associated with diving, but the evidence is not certain and further research is needed. 'Internal ear barotrauma' can cause an acute or relatively acute onset of hearing loss and/or vertigo, and it may be that 'alternobaric vertigo' provides a link between the insidious and acute forms of labyrinthine injury in diving. With deep diving, decompression sickness and other syndromes can also affect the cochleo-vestibular system. These aetiologies and effects will be discussed, together with evidence from an audiometric survey of

[Pneumococcal meningitis revealing dysplasia of the bony labyrinth in an infant].

BACKGROUND: Dysplasias of the bony labyrinth are frequently associated with cerebrospinal fluid fistula and are usually discovered because of recurrent meningitis. CASE REPORT: A 1 year-old infant was admitted for a pneumococcal meningitis which appeared 2 days after the occurrence of a clear otorrhea from the right ear. The same organism was isolated from the otorrhea fluid, which also contained cerebrospinal fluid as confirmed cytochemically. The meningitis rapidly resolved with antibiotic treatment. Auditory brain stem responses were abolished from the right ear. CT of the temporal bones s

Floating labyrinth: A unique finding on CT scan.

We report a case of a 67-year-old female patient that presented to the emergency department with complete right facial paralysis, progressive hearing loss and chronic otorrhea. A unique finding on CT scan is reported: a "floating labyrinth" - cochlea, vestibule and semicircular canals extensively surrounded by soft tissue density material but with intact thinned otic capsule walls. A transotic approach was performed for removal of noncholesteatomatous inflammatory tissue; intravenous antibiotics and corticosteroids led to partial recovery of facial nerve function. A chronic suppurative otitis

Multiple temporal bone anomalies in isotretinoin syndrome: a temporal bone histopathologic case report.

Vitamin A and its derivatives are known teratogens. To our knowledge, this is the second temporal bone histopathologic report on anomalies related to these substances. A white boy (aged 4 years 5 months at death) was born with a complex central nervous system dysgenesis related to his mother's use of isotretinoin (Accutane) early in pregnancy. Histopathologic examination revealed multiple anomalies in the temporal bones: a narrow external auditory canal, protrusion of bone marrow into the middle ear cavity, anomalies of the ossicles, hypoplasia of the facial nerve, absence of the chorda tympan

Mucormycosis of the temporal bone.

Mucormycosis of the temporal bone is described in a 60-year-old female with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus whose symptoms related to cranial nerve palsies and hearing loss, following spread of infection from the nasopharynx. The infection spread along the eustachian tube and tensor tympani muscle to the base of the skull, involving the internal carotid artery with mycotic thrombosis and rupture. Subsequent spread occurred from this area predominantly along nerve pathways and as mycotic emboli in blood vessels of the labyrinth and middle ear. Infection also spread from the anterior middle ear w

Human vestibular nerve morphology and labyrinthectomy.

Surgical labyrinthectomy leads to extensive and degenerative changes in the membranous labyrinth and is often followed by fibrosis and ossification of the vestibule and neuroma formation. After labyrinthectomy the distal processes of the vestibular nerve degenerate, but the nerve trunk within the internal auditory canal, including Scarpa's ganglion, does not show an obvious loss of neurons. Electron microscopic examination of the cells of Scarpa's ganglion revealed many changes similar to those of chromatolysis, indicating increased cell metabolism and probable regenerative changes. Many nerve

Mondini defect in association with multiple congenital anomalies.

A case of bilaterally symmetrical genetic aplasia conforming to Mondini type of congenital deformity in a 12-day-old child is presented with the help of temporal bone sections. Cochlear changes include a stunted modiolus, deficient interscalar septum between the middle and upper coils forming a scala communis cochleae, a degenerated organ of Corti and reduced spiral ganglion cells and dendrites. The vestibule is malformed, with membranous labyrinth being deficient. The utricle and semicircular canals are absent. There is no oval window or stapedial footplate, and the facial nerve is hypoplasti

[Vestibular cortex and vestibular agnosia].

This review analyzes recent literature on the structure of the vestibular cortex. Researchers have identified at least ten brain regions that respond to vestibular stimulation. The vestibular regions identified by caloric, galvanic, and auditory vestibular stimulation are mainly located deep in the lateral sulcus and in the perisylvian cortex around the sylvian fissure. They are also found in the primary somatosensory, posterior parietal, frontal, extrastriate cortex, the cingulate gyrus, and the hippocampus. Together, these regions form the vestibular cortex, a broad network of multisensory r

The value of vestibular graviceptive pathway evaluation in the diagnosis of unilateral peripheral vestibular dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of vestibular graviceptive pathway (VGP) in patients with unilateral peripheral vestibular dysfunction (UPVD) has received increasing attention from researchers. The study aimed to investigate the value of VGP evaluation in the diagnosis of UPVD. METHODS: Ninety-five UPVD patients were divided into attack and remission phase groups. VGP evaluation-related indicators, including subjective visual vertical (SVV), subjective visual horizontal (SVH), head tilt, ocular torsion (OT), and skew deviation (SD), were measured, and their correlations with cochleovestibular function

A Resonant Circuit Involving the Vestibule and Cochlea Base Could Cause Extremely Low-Frequency Tinnitus, also Called "The Hum" or "Taos Hum".

INTRODUCTION: "The Hum" or "Taos Hum" are common names for the sound associated with tinnitus at extremely low frequencies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the cause and place of origin of the hum using relevant data from the literature along with data extracted from a questionnaire and other related information. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The vestibule and cochlea base seem to play a crucial role in the generation and elimination of the hum. The origin of the hum seems to appear in a region near the vestibule and cochlea base, in which a phase resonance could occur between the electri

[The influence of corticosteroids on the frequency of vestibular crises].

The objective of the present study was to elucidate the dynamics of the hormonal status of the adrenal glands in the patients suffering from Menière's disease in its different clinical forms. We examined a total of 26 patients at the age from 29 to 47 years presenting with this condition. All the patients were divided into two groups depending on the character of the disease. Group 1 was comprised of 20 patients experiencing the crises from 2 to 6 times during a year. Group 2 was composed of six patients in whom the crises occurred with a frequency of 2-4 times per week within at least two wee

Isolated central vestibular syndrome.

Isolated vestibular syndrome may occur all along the vestibular pathways from the peripheral labyrinth to the brain. By virtue of recent developments in clinical neurotology and neuroimaging, however, diagnosis of isolated central vestibulopathy is increasing. Here, we review five distinct syndromes of isolated central vestibular syndrome from lesions restricted to the vestibular nuclei, the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi, the flocculus, the tonsil, and the nodulus, and introduce a new vestibular syndrome from isolated involvement of the inferior cerebellar peduncle. Decreased responses to head
