BACKGROUND: Intracranial schwannomas are most commonly associated with the vestibulocochlear nerve, often leading to hearing loss, tinnitus, and vestibular dysfunction. Much less often, a schwannoma can arise from the trigeminal nerve which can lead to facial pain, numbness, and weakness.
PURPOSE: We explored a case of a patient with an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-confirmed trigeminal schwannoma that was mistaken for a vestibulocochlear schwannoma because of a myriad of ipsilateral vestibulocochlear symptoms.
RESEARCH DESIGN: This is a retrospective chart review and case study, with no

A 30-year-old previously healthy man presented with fever and headache. HIV tests yielded negative results. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed pleocytosis (619/µL), elevated protein (210.3 mg/dL) and adenosine deaminase levels, and decreased glucose levels. A positive CSF culture for tuberculosis confirmed the patient had tuberculous meningitis (TBM). He was treated with methylprednisolone, isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol (all highly sensitive). His compliance with medication was good. After six weeks of treatment, he was discharged in stable condition. Eight weeks

Neurosurgical intervention remains the main step in the effective management of vestibular schwannomas. Extensive studies on vestibular schwannoma treatment have placed emphasis on preserving quality of life and neurological functions, particularly of the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves. Facial nerve preservation and hearing preservation have been achieved by significant advances in skull base microsurgical techniques and intraoperative neuromonitoring. Diffusion tensor imaging is a powerful and accurate method for preoperatively identifying the facial nerve in relation to vestibular schwa

Neural apparatus of epineurium, perineurium and endoneurium of the cat vestibulocochlear nerve was studied by methods of Rasskazova, Bielshowsky--Gross, Kampos, Kuprianov, Gomori, Falck in modification of Chilingarian, Koelle--Gomori, Falck--Hillarp--Govyrin. A single gravitation loading effect was stated to produce reactive, and sometimes destructive changes in the sensitive nervous structures of the intraorganic apparatus of the neural sheaths. The greatest and earliest changes (the first day) were noted in the neural apparatus of epineurium of the vestibulocochlear nerve, the least and late

Vascular loops in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and their relationship to cranial nerves have been used to explain neurological symptoms. The anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) has variable branches producing vascular loops that can compress the facial cranial nerve (CN) VII and vestibulocochlear (CN VIII) nerves. AICA compression of the facial-vestibulocochlear nerve complex can lead to various clinical presentations, including hemifacial spasm (HFS), tinnitus, and hemiataxia. The formation of arterial loops inside or outside of the internal auditory meatus (IAM) can cause abutment

BACKGROUND: Neurinomas of the vestibulocochlear nerve unrelated to neurofibromatosis in children are extremely rare. Only 20 cases in children under the age of 16 are reported in the literature. Progressive unilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and neurological deficits due to cranial nerve or brainstem compression are clinical signs.
PATIENT AND RESULTS: We report on the case of a 12-years-old girl with an unilateral hearing loss, progressing to total deafness. Otoacoustic emissions were normal. In the MRI a large cerebellopontine angle tumor was found, identified as schwannoma of the v

We report the detailed documented case of a 57-year-old homosexual HIV-positive man with bilateral cochleovestibular deficits as a first symptom of syphilis infection in early stage II disease. As a morphological substrate, a strong enhancement of both inner ears and vestibulocochlear nerves were found on gadolinium-enhanced MR scans. The serological tests identified an active infection with Treponema pallidum. After a high-dose treatment with penicillin G and prednisolone, the auditory and vestibular functions and the MR morphology of the vestibulocochlear nerves and inner ears on both sides

OBJECTIVE: Sennaroglu's classification is the most accepted classification worldwide for inner ear and/or nerve malformation, although only limited data is available for the Asian population. This study aims to assess their relative frequency, summarise their radiological features, and determine their correlation with hearing impairment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients with imaging-proven inner ear and/or nerve malformation in a single tertiary hospital in Hong Kong in 2014-2023. Clinical data were reviewed along with relevant imaging findings.
RESULTS: A total of 1

The histopathological changes in human temporal bones are described for 2 cases of kwashiorkor--a protein/calorie malnutrition (PCM) state. There is photographic evidence of severe damge to the middle and inner ears and to the vestibulocochlear nerve. The middle ear shows evidence of chronic otitis media, a common clinical finding in kwashiorkor. Significantly, the round window membranes in both cases showed thickening and infiltration with inflammatory cells. The inner ear showed the loss of cellular elements and hair cell loss in the spiral organ. A marked decrease of spiral ganglion cells a

Sixty patients with acute idiopathic vestibular neuritis (confirmed by clinical examination and caloric irrigation) were evaluated in a prospective study by high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (hr-MRI) between days 3 and 30 after onset of symptoms. We used a 1.5 Tesla imager with an axial and coronal T1-weighted 2D-fast low angle shot-, T2-weighted turbo spin echo-, and an axial T2-weighted 3D-constructive interference in steady-state sequence for MRI. None of the patients' MRIs exhibited contrast enhancement of the labyrinth, vestibulocochlear nerve, or vestibular ganglion, even when h

Background and Objectives: The labyrinthine artery (LA) is a small but surgically important vessel encountered during procedures involving the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). Variations in its number, origin, and relationship to the facial-vestibulocochlear nerve complex may increase the risk of vascular injury during CPA surgery. The aim of this cadaveric microdissection study was to evaluate the number, origin, and course of the LA within the CPA and to characterize its relationship to the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) and the facial-vestibulocochlear nerve complex. Otitis interna was diagnosed in five 9-to-21-day-old turkey poults with clinical signs of paralysis, opisthotonus, torticollis, blindness, and increased mortality. Gross and microscopic lesions in the poults included omphalitis, typhlitis, hepatitis, meningoencephalitis, ophthalmitis, neuritis and ganglionitis of the vestibulocochlear nerve, and otitis interna. Salmonella enterica arizonae was isolated from the brains, eyes, intestines, yolk sacs, and livers of poults. Birds with otitis interna also had meningoencephalitis. It is most likely that the S. enterica arizonae infection spread from

Because acoustic neuromas most frequently arise in the posteriorly placed vestibular nerves, they usually displace the facial and cochlear nerves anteriorly (Figs. 11, 12, and 13). The facial nerve is stretched around the anterior half of the tumor capsule. Variability in the direction of growth of the tumor arising from the vestibular nerves may result in the facial nerve being displaced, not only directly anteriorly, but also anterior-superiorly or anterior-inferiorly. The nerve is infrequently found on the posterior surface of the tumor. Because the facial nerve always enters the facial can

Hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness and disequilibrium are frequent complaints of patients with labyrinthine and retrolabyrinthine lesions. The objective of a neurotological examination is to establish the presence and location of a lesion, whether it is labyrinthine (cochlear or vestibular) or intracranial. On the basis of neurotological and vestibular results, provided by neurotologist or otolaryngologist, if a retrocochlear or retrovestibular lesion is suspected, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) study of the head is obtained with particular attention to the acous

One of the side effects of hydroxychloroquine is ototoxicity. This study examined the effect of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) on ototoxicity in rats treated with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). In this study, 24 rats (male, albino Wistar) were used. The animals were divided into four groups: healthy control group (HG), ATP alone group (ATPG), HCQ alone group (HCQG), and ATP + HCQ (AHQG) group. The ATPG and AHQG groups were injected with ATP intraperitoneally (IP) at a dose of 4 mg/kg/day. The HG and HCQG groups were treated with the same volume of saline as the solvent by IP route. The AHQG group was

BACKGROUND: Intermediate nerve neuralgia (INN) is a rare condition believed to be caused by vascular compression, with external auditory canal pain as the chief symptom. The authors reported a rare case of a 78-year-old woman who developed INN during follow-up for hemifacial spasm (HFS).
OBSERVATIONS: The patient had been receiving Botox treatment for right HFS for 20 years when she developed paroxysmal electric shock pain in the right external auditory canal and tinnitus induced by opening her mouth. A three-dimensional magnetic resonance fusion image showed the cisternal portion of the faci

OBJECTIVE: Imaging to visualize nerves around tumors preoperatively could help the surgeon to plan the surgery and excise the tumor with preservation or improvement in patients' quality of life. In the present prospective study, we attempted to correlate the preoperative cranial nerves (i.e., trigeminal, abducens, facial, and vestibulocochlear diffusion tensor tractography and anatomic magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] findings) with intraoperative findings during cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumor surgery.
METHODS: The 40 enrolled patients had CPA tumors (31 vestibular schwannomas, 5 epidermo

We present the first case of pontine tegmental cap dysplasia (PTCD) reported in South Africa, involving a one-year-old girl with bilateral sensorineural deafness, global atrophy, hemivertebrae, and butterfly vertebrae. Clinical examination revealed subtle dysmorphic features, abnormal corneal sensation, bilateral strabismus, and uncertain visual acuity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated key diagnostic features, including ventral pons hypoplasia, ectopic dorsal pontine tissue, and cranial nerve abnormalities such as hypoplasia of the facial nerves, absent right vestibulocochlear ner

Neurovascular compression is a potential, yet rare cause of vertigo and unilateral tinnitus. Despite the high success rate of microvascular decompression (MVD) in other vascular compression syndromes, the outcome reported after MVD of the vestibulocochlear nerve is variable.1,2 The presence of combined symptoms of tinnitus and vertigo treated by MVD has demonstrated a higher predictive value for success.3 In this video, we present the case of a 68-year-old male who presented with vertigo and tinnitus refractory to medical management and vestibular therapy. Audiologic evaluation was normal apar
