Early identification is key to reducing the morbidity and mortality of oropharyngeal cancer. This study identified factors associated with self-awareness among patients newly diagnosed with a premalignant oral lesion. Data describing sociodemographics, medical/dental histories, tobacco/alcohol use and oral health were obtained by questionnaire and clinical examination of 73 veterans at six U.S. Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. Lesion types included homogenous and non-homogenous leukoplakia, smokeless tobacco lesion (STL), papilloma, lichen planus and erythroplakia. Prior to diagnosis, 29 subj

Ending veteran homelessness remains a priority within the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Efforts over the past decade have led to encouraging declines in veteran homelessness but have required significant funds and resources. Analysis of clinical characteristics and utilization patterns of veterans accessing VA homeless programing can clarify the needs of and inform treatment for this subset of the veteran population. Veterans were categorized according to low, moderate, or high rates of VA homeless service use from 2005 to 2024 (N = 1,086,852) and compared based on demographic profi

OBJECTIVES: Veterans generally accept the rationale for suicide risk screening; however, the screening process can be affected by barriers to disclosure. The objective of this analysis was to describe veteran and staff perspectives on fears of involuntary hospitalization related to screening and how staff can help alleviate these concerns to facilitate disclosure.
METHODS: We used semi-structured interviews to collect qualitative data and applied thematic analysis to transcripts using a conventional/directed hybrid approach. The sample comprised 90 veterans recently screened for suicidal idea

Since 2009, the U.S. Veterans Administration has made concentrated efforts to end homelessness among veterans. As part of these efforts, the Iowa City, Iowa, VA Health Care System in collaboration with local community providers deployed a supportive housing program aimed at homeless veterans. Called the Lodge program, it is intended to serve a Mid-Western mid-size city and its surrounding rural communities. This article presents qualitative findings from a mixed-method, two-year formative evaluation of the Lodge's implementation. Primary barriers to the effectiveness of the Lodge program were

IMPORTANCE: Homelessness is a persistent and growing problem. What role health systems should play and how that role is incorporated into larger strategic efforts are not well-defined.
OBJECTIVE: To compare homelessness among veterans with that in the general population during a 16-year study period before and after implementation of the Ending Veteran Homelessness Initiative, a program to rehouse veterans experiencing homelessness.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the spectrum and severity of cognitive symptoms in veterans with migraine, traumatic brain injury (TBI), or both; and to evaluate the extent to which psychiatric conditions contribute to the relationship of migraine and TBI with cognitive symptoms.
BACKGROUND: Migraine contributes significantly to global disability, with veterans facing additional burdens due to high comorbidity of TBI and psychiatric conditions. Understanding the intersection of these conditions is crucial for improving veterans' health-care outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Recreational and adaptive sports programs may be beneficial therapeutic interventions for improving psychological outcomes among veterans and service members with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because they provide opportunities for exercise, socialization, respite, and time outdoors. Although there are an increasing number of sports programs for veterans and service members with PTSD, data evaluating the outcomes of such programs are limited.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample included 74 U.S. veterans who participated in the National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic (NVSSC),

Reentry courts facilitate successful offender reintegration into the community following release from incarceration, and many justice-involved veterans may benefit from such services given their elevated risk for deleterious outcomes postrelease. However, effectively engaging court participants is a crucial foundation to achieve the goals of recidivism reduction and global psychosocial improvement. This conceptual article presents an overview of factors that may interfere with a veteran's engagement in reentry court through the lens of both veteran and offender identity. Recommendations for re

Homeless women Veterans have a high prevalence of chronic mental and physical conditions that necessitate frequent healthcare visits, but travel burdens to specialty services may be overwhelming to navigate for this population, especially for those in rural settings. Access to specialty care is a key priority in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and understanding the geographic distribution and rural designation of this population in relation to medical centers (VAMC) can assist in care coordination. We identified 41,747 women Veterans age 18-44y with administrative evidence of homeless

Hostility is associated with substantial mental and physical health consequences. Population-based data regarding the nature and longitudinal course of hostility in U. S. veterans are scarce. We analyzed data from 2157 U. S. veterans who participated in the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a nationally representative, prospective cohort study of U. S. veterans. We identified the prevalence of longitudinal courses of hostility (chronic, increasing, decreasing, or no hostility). We then evaluated relationships between sociodemographic, risk, and protective correlates measured at

BACKGROUND: Women veterans represent a vulnerable population with unique health needs and disparities in access to care. One constellation of exposures related to subsequent poor health includes adverse childhood experiences (ACEs; e.g., physical and sexual child abuse), though research on impacts of ACEs among women veterans is limited.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System for the 11 states that included the ACE module (n=36,485). Weighted chi-squared tests and multivariable logistic regression were used to assess the prevalence of ACEs among wome

OBJECTIVE: Few data exist exploring the relationship between sleep apnea (SA), insomnia, comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA) and mortality among race-ethnic minoritized (REM) US veterans. This study compares all-cause mortality among Veterans Health Administration (VHA) patients diagnosed with these sleep disorders by race-ethnicity.
METHODS: The study included veterans with confirmed diagnoses and prescribed treatment for insomnia and/or SA, within the VHA, from 1999 to 2023. Using self-reported data, eight race-ethnicity groups were generated (i.e., Non-Hispanic White [NH-W], Non-His

INTRODUCTION: Goals of care discussions (GCDs) are recommended for patients with cirrhosis but rarely conducted. Since 2017, the Veterans Health Administration has provided a standardized note template that clinicians can use to document GCDs for Veterans with serious illness. We aimed to quantify the frequency and timing of GCDs in this population, along with the factors associated with GCDs and their content.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study identified Veterans with cirrhosis from January 2017 to July 2022 and captured GCDs until July 2023. We assessed the association between demogr

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: With an epidemic of drug overdoses, contemporary research is needed to examine drug overdose deaths among homeless populations. This study measured rates, types and correlates of drug overdose deaths occurring over a 5-year study period among veterans experiencing homelessness (VEH) and non-homeless veterans (NHV) in the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: USA.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 6 128 921 veterans. We followed 399 125 VEH and 5 729 796 NHV between 2017 and 2021 using linked administrative VA and N

BACKGROUND: Women with lower extremity amputations (LEAs) tend to have poorer prosthesis-related outcomes than men, although the literature is sparse. To our knowledge, there are no prior studies examining prosthesis-related outcomes of women veterans with LEAs.
OBJECTIVE: To examine gender differences (overall and by type of amputation) among veterans who underwent LEAs between 2005 and 2018, received care at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) prior to undergoing amputation, and were prescribed a prosthesis. It was hypothesized that compared to men, women would report lower satisfactio

Despite increasing recognition that positive psychological changes or posttraumatic growth (PTG) may develop after highly stressful or traumatic events, contemporary population-based data on the epidemiology of PTG in high-risk samples such as U.S. military veterans are lacking. Additionally, in light of emerging evidence suggesting an 8-factor model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, an up-to-date characterization of how these symptom clusters relate to PTG can help inform efforts to help promote PTG. Data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veter

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive drinking is an increasing concern among military policy makers and healthcare providers. The goal of this study was to assess how social and psychological factors relate to alcohol problems among post-deployed US veterans and how problematic drinking is associated with well-being.
METHODS: Data were collected via a telephone survey from a random sample of veterans receiving their healthcare from a large non-VA hospital system in central Pennsylvania (N = 1730). Interviewers inquired about participants' current alcohol consumption, using the CAGE and AUDIT-C scales, and

OBJECTIVES: There are currently no reliable estimates of the prevalence of gastrointestinal disease in the US Military Veterans. Hence, the study aims to determine its prevalence in military Veterans in the United States.
METHODS: This study utilized a retrospective, correlational design using a patient record database from the Department of Veteran's Affairs. The participants in the study were Veterans diagnosed with gastrointestinal disease. Specific gastrointestinal diseases include more than 500,000 ambulatory care visits annually in the United States, which included peptic ulcer disease,
