Video/EEG recording of myoclonic absences in GLUT1 deficiency syndrome with a hot-spot R126C mutation in the SLC2A1 gene.

Glucose transporter type 1 deficiency syndrome (GLUT1DS) is an inborn error of brain energy metabolism characterized by impaired glucose transport into the brain. A classic phenotype comprising epilepsy, mental retardation, an often paroxysmal disorder, and several subtypes has been described. Although typical absences are frequent in GLUT1DS, myoclonic absence seizures are rarely reported. Here we describe a novel Turkish patient with a hot-spot mutation (R126C) in the SLC2A1 gene who presented with unusual myoclonic absence epilepsy and paroxysmal shivering. The case is discussed in view of

Nursing students' self-evaluation using a video recording of foley catheterization: effects on students' competence, communication skills, and learning motivation.

An opportunity for a student to evaluate his or her own performance enhances self-awareness and promotes self-directed learning. Using three outcome measures of competency of procedure, communication skills, and learning motivation, the effects of self-evaluation using a video recording of the student's Foley catheterization was investigated in this study. The students in the experimental group (n = 20) evaluated their Foley catheterization performance by reviewing the video recordings of their own performance, whereas students in the control group (n = 20) received written evaluation guidelin

Ictal video-EEG recording of three partial seizures in a patient with the benign infantile convulsions associated with mild gastroenteritis.

PURPOSE: In infants, benign convulsions can be triggered by febrile illness or mild diarrhea such as Rotavirus gastroenteritis. The triggering mechanism of these convulsions is still unknown. In spite of several reports concerning clinical features, the ictal EEG recordings were rarely analyzed by a video-EEG monitoring system. To reveal a clue for the triggering mechanism of these convulsions, we analyzed the correlation of clinical manifestations and the EEG discharges during the ictal events and compared with previous reports. METHODS: The ictal EEG of a cluster of three afebrile convulsio

Development of at-home video recordings for functional skill assessment in Angelman Syndrome: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Outcome measures currently used to assess function in Angelman Syndrome (AS) may be affected by participant anxiety in the clinic, use of a measure outside of age norms, and a reliance on caregiver report. This study aimed to leverage the process used to develop the Duchenne Video Assessment to develop, pilot, and evaluate tasks to be recorded in AS to lay the foundation for the Angelman Syndrome Video Assessment (ASVA), which is being developed for the assessment of everyday functional skills in individuals with AS in their home environment. METHODS: The task list was informed by

Deep-Learning Markerless Tracking of Infant General Movements using Standard Video Recordings.

Monitoring spontaneous General Movements (GM) of infants 6-20 weeks post-term age is a reliable tool to assess the quality of neurodevelopment in early infancy. Abnormal or absent GMs are reliable prognostic indicators of whether an infant is at risk of developing neurological impairments and disorders such as cerebral palsy (CP). Therapeutic interventions are most effective at improving neuromuscular outcomes if administered in early infancy. Current clinical protocols require trained assessors to rate videos of infant movements, a time-intensive task. This work proposes a simple, inexpensive

Comparison of Video-Identified Head Contacts and Sensor-Recorded Events in High School Soccer.

Field studies have evaluated the accuracy of sensors to measure head impact exposure using video analysis, but few have studied false negatives. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the proportion of potential false negatives in high school soccer head impact data. High school athletes (23 females and 31 males) wore headband-mounted Smart Impact Monitor-G impact sensors during competitive soccer games. Video footage from 41 varsity games was analyzed by 2 independent reviewers to identify head contact events, which were defined as visually observed contact to the head. Of

Remote evaluation of video-otoscopy recordings in an unselected pediatric population with an otitis media scale.

BACKGROUND: A recently validated image-based grading scale for acute otitis media (OMGRADE) can be used to assess tympanic membrane (TM) status. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of this scale for remote assessments of TM status using video-otoscopy recordings in an unselected pediatric population. METHOD: Children 2-16 years attending a South African primary health clinic were offered an ear examination by an otologist using otomicroscopy. An ear and hearing telehealth facilitator then made video-otoscopy recordings (9-33s) of the ears and uptakes were upload

[Sector-related grey scale analysis of video ultrasound recorded tongue movements in swallowing].

Diseases of the oral cavity, floor of the mouth, and nervous system can be accompanied by disturbances in tongue movement during swallowing. These disturbances can be diagnosed by videosonography whereby the examiner has to evaluate extensive video documentation of lingual motion. It was the aim of this study to facilitate this evaluation by the application of a reproducible computer-assisted quantitative analysis procedure. Video sequences of 56 healthy adults and 19 patients with dysphagias of different etiologies were analysed. A numerical estimation of swallowing movements was carried out

Necessity is the mother of invention: video recording firsthand perspectives of critical medical procedures to make simulated training more effective.

The traditional apprenticeship model for training doctors requires ample opportunities in the clinic for trainees to learn core procedures under the supervision of skilled doctors. In this issue, Kyser and colleagues document that the learning opportunities for residents to master certain core procedures, such as forceps and vacuum deliveries, are insufficient in many teaching hospitals. To address this serious problem, this author argues that learning techniques (i.e., deliberate practice and simulator use) from other domains of expertise, such as chess, music, and sports, must be adapted for

[Video-endoscopic recording of the pharynx before and following nasal continuous positive airway pressure therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea].

The action mechanism of nCPAP in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea is not adequately known. We took video endoscopic pictures (chip video camera manufactured by Videotronik) of the pharynx in five patients with SA in the awake state, during apnea during sleep, and under nCPAP treatment during sleep. The patients were all in the supine position. Simultaneously with video-endoscopy, polysomnography was performed. Qualitatively good pictures were obtained in 3 patients. In the awake state, a relatively narrow pharynx was observed which, however, was completely patent during the entire resp

Functionality of symptoms and interpersonal communication in home video recordings of functional/dissociative versus epileptic seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Conceptualizing functional/dissociative seizures (FDS) as resulting from dissociation, or conversion, we hypothesized that, compared to epileptic seizures (ES), FDS should carry more symbolic or communicative content and that this would allow observers to distinguish FDS from ES. METHODS: Three independent, epileptologically naive raters evaluated home videos of patients with confirmed diagnoses of either FDS or ES using a standardized form. The focus of the ratings was explicitly not on seizure semiology, but on verbal and nonverbal behavior, the role of proxies, interaction patte

Safety profile of intracranial electrode implantation for video-EEG recordings in drug-resistant focal epilepsy.

Invasive electroencephalography recordings with depth or subdural electrodes are necessary to identify the ictogenic area in some drug-resistant focal epilepsies. We aimed to analyze the safety profile of intracranial electrode implantation in a tertiary center and the factors associated with its complications. We retrospectively examined complications in 163 intracranial procedures performed in adult patients. Implantation methods included oblique depth stereotactic approach (n = 128) and medial-temporal depth stereotactic approach in combination with subdural strip placement (n = 35). 1201 d

Elevated Mood Induced by Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation: A Video-Recorded Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) can be an effective therapy to control motor signs in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, subthalamic nucleus (STN) DBS can induce undesirable psychiatric adverse effects, including elevated mood. CASE REPORT: We reported a video case of a 73-year-old male implanted with bilateral STN DBS who experienced stimulation-induced elevated mood. A correlation between mood changes and enhanced activation of the ventromedial region in the left STN was observed. DISCUSSION: This video case report illustrates STN DBS-induced elevated mood and enhanc

Nursing students' experiences of being video-recorded during examination in a fictive emergency care situation.

Promoting undergraduate nursing students' learning in simulated care can be achieved through dynamic scenario-based training sessions that are documented using simple video equipment. One valuable aspect of this kind of training is the subsequent reflective dialogue that takes place between the teacher and the students during the examination. The aim of the present paper is to describe bachelor nursing students' experiences of being video-recorded during an examination with a simulated patient in emergency care. The study was descriptive in design and used a qualitative approach with written a

Unveiling the Sources and Transfer of Mercury in Forest Bird Food Chains Using Techniques of Vivo-Nest Video Recording and Stable Isotopes.

Knowledge gaps in mercury (Hg) biomagnification in forest birds, especially in the most species-rich tropical and subtropical forests, limit our understanding of the ecological risks of Hg deposition to forest birds. This study aimed to quantify Hg bioaccumulation and transfer in the food chains of forest birds in a subtropical montane forest using a bird diet recorded by video and stable Hg isotope signals of biological and environmental samples. Results show that inorganic mercury (IHg) does not biomagnify along food chains, whereas methylmercury (MeHg) has trophic magnification factors of 7
