A qualitative evaluation of team and family perceptions of family-based treatment delivered by videoconferencing (FBT-V) for adolescent Anorexia Nervosa during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, outpatient eating disorder care, including Family-Based Treatment (FBT), rapidly transitioned from in-person to virtual delivery in many programs. This paper reports on the experiences of teams and families with FBT delivered by videoconferencing (FBT-V) who were part of a larger implementation study. METHODS: Four pediatric eating disorder programs in Ontario, Canada, including their therapists (n = 8), medical practitioners (n = 4), administrators (n = 6), and families (n = 5), participated in our study. We provided FBT-V training and delivered clin

Using American Sign Language-Fluent Community Health Navigators to Advance Cancer Screening Adherence through Videoconferencing With Deaf, Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing Adults: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cancer screening nonadherence persists among adults who are deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing (DDBHH). These barriers span individual, clinician, and health care system levels, contributing to difficulties understanding cancer information, accessing screening services, and following treatment directives. Critical communication barriers include ineffective patient-physician communication, limited access to American Sign Language (ASL) cancer information, misconceptions about medical procedures, insurance navigation difficulties, and intersectional barriers for multiply marginaliz

Possible Concomitant Aggressive NK Cell Leukemia and EBV-positive T-cell lymphoma; Using the online beta version of WHO-HAEM5 and videoconferencing software to make diagnoses accessible in an emerging economy.

BACKGROUND: Using the World Health Organization Classification 5th edition (beta version online; WHO-HAEM5bv) in emerging economies is key to global healthcare equity. Although there may be ongoing updates, hesitancy in accepting and reporting these diagnoses in publication conflicts with the WHO's commitment to global accessibility. Aggressive NK cell leukemia (ANKL) and systemic EBV-positive T-cell lymphoma of childhood (SEBVTCL) with CD4-positive immunophenotype are both rare entities, are most described in Asians and East Asians, are associated with prior systemic chronic active EBV diseas

Evaluating an Abbreviated Version of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Delivered via Telephone or Videoconferencing Compared to Enhanced Usual Care-Treatment for Migraine and Mood (TEAM-M) Study: Protocol for a Three-Arm Multisite Randomized Controlled Feasibility Trial.

BACKGROUND: Migraine ranks among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Comorbid depressive symptoms are highly prevalent in patients with migraine and are associated with worsened pain severity, greater migraine-related disability, and poorer migraine prognosis. Despite this burdensome comorbidity, the treatment of these co-occurring disorders has rarely been studied. While mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) shows promise for addressing both migraine-related disability and depressive symptoms, its traditional format-8 weekly 2-hour sessions in person-creates substantial access ba

Families' Experience of Family Therapy by Videoconference During the First Lockdown: A Qualitative Study.

To ensure continuity of care during the Covid-19 pandemic, family therapy sessions were maintained via videoconferencing. Few studies evaluate the effectiveness of this modality. This exploratory qualitative study gathered the experiences of families who underwent videoconferencing family therapy during the first French lockdown and in-person therapy before and after. This study was conducted in France, within a department of adolescent medicine and psychiatry. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight families and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results

Telemedicine Approaches for Patients with Cirrhosis, Including Vulnerable Populations: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of telemedicine in health care. However, telemedicine in cirrhosis care remains underexplored. In particular, patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) may be overrepresented among vulnerable populations, but have limited access to telemedicine. METHOD: We performed a literature review on telemedicine approaches for patients with cirrhosis as well as patients with AUD and HCV with or without cirrhosis. Peer-reviewed studies involving direct patient-physician interactions were searched on PubMed and Google Sc

Using physical objects with young children in 'face-to-face' and telehealth speech and language therapy.

PURPOSE: Speech language therapists increasingly are using telehealth to enhance the accessibility of their services. It is unclear, however, how play-based therapy for children can be delivered via telehealth. In particular, modalities such as videoconferencing do not enable physical engagement between therapists and clients. The aim of our reported study was to understand how physical objects such as toys are used in similar and different ways across videoconferenced and "face-to-face" (hereafter, "in-person") therapy. METHODS: We used conversation analytic methods to compare video-recorded

Hybrid Analysis of Videoconference Technology Use by Aging-in-Place Organizations to Promote Social Engagement for Older Adults: A Scoping Review with Latent Topic Modeling.

Background/Objectives: Loneliness and social isolation are common among older adults and linked to adverse health outcomes. Videoconferencing can support social connections, but the role of aging-in-place organizations (AIPOs), such as senior centers and Area Agencies on Aging, in facilitating adoption is poorly understood. This review examined how AIPOs use relational videoconferencing to promote social engagement among older adults. Methods: We applied a hybrid methodology combining a scoping review with latent topic modeling to contextualize and analyze the evidence base. Exploratory search

Looking Beyond the Screen to Study the Technology Use of Older People Experiencing Cognitive Concerns.

Research with older adults has hinted at the ways that elements beyond the interface play a role in technology use, including videoconferencing. To further understand the range of materials and resources involved, we studied videoconferencing use by ten older individuals with cognitive concerns in a week-long study of interviews, observations, and a modified diary study. Our analysis identified that objects extending beyond software and hardware play a role in videoconferencing, including paper-based objects, personal items, and objects in the built environment. These objects support participa

Experience with telehealth for sleep monitoring and sleep laboratory management.

In 2009, we established a pilot telehealth service to a sleep laboratory in Garden City, Kansas, approximately 600 km from the Kansas University Medical Center. Videoconferencing was used for polysomnography (PSG) study follow-up, patient monitoring and sleep laboratory medical management. It allowed the sleep specialist to treat patients and collaborate with sleep laboratory personnel from a distance without extensive travel. In the first six months the telemedicine clinic was held on six occasions. There were 18 new patient evaluations and four follow up visits. The most common diagnosis was

Pilot Study of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Protocol via Videoconference for the Management of Pain, Emotional Distress, and Quality of Life in Mexican Patients with Cancer and Chronic Pain.

Pain is a common symptom in patients with cancer accompanied by anxiety, depression, and worsening Quality of Life (QoL). Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has proven to be effective in the management of these symptoms, although access to it faces multiple barriers. While Videoconferencing can be an option, its application in patients with cancer and chronic pain in Latin America remains limited. To evaluate the preliminary feasibility and acceptability of CBT via videoconferencing to improving pain, anxiety, depression, and quality of life in Mexican patients with cancer and chronic pain. A National Study of Zoom Fatigue and Mental Health During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Implications for Future Remote Work.

Overuse of videoconferencing for work may contribute to what has been called "Zoom fatigue": feeling anxious, socially isolated, or emotionally exhausted due to lack of social connection. Given implications for employee well-being, this study investigated Zoom fatigue at work and its potential link to mental health symptoms. A national survey of mental health symptoms was conducted in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2020. Adults (n = 902) endorsing a shift at work to videoconferencing completed an online survey; survey criteria included an age minimum of 22 years and r

Online versus in-person delivery of cognitive behaviour therapy for obsessive compulsive disorder: An examination of effectiveness.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) including exposure and response prevention is the first-line psychological treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Given changes in the clinical landscape, there are increasing efforts to evaluate its effectiveness in online contexts. Mirroring the traditional in-person delivery, few studies have assessed the role of therapist-guided, manual-based CBT for OCD delivered in real-time via videoconferencing methods. The present study sought to fill this gap by comparing in-person and online delivery of group-based CBT for the treatment of OCD. A conve

Telerehabilitation for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: feasibility of a simple, real time model of supervised exercise training.

We evaluated the safety and feasibility of home telerehabilitation for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Eight patients with mean age of 66 years and moderately impaired lung function took part. The telerehabilitation equipment in the participant's home included an exercise bicycle, a tablet computer with webcam for low bandwidth videoconferencing, and a pulse oximeter positioned so that the display was visible while videoconferencing. Participants undertook supervised aerobic training twice a week for eight weeks, with two participants and a physiotherapist attending e

A pilot exploration of speech sound disorder intervention delivered by telehealth to school-age children.

This article describes a school-based telehealth service delivery model and reports outcomes made by school-age students with speech sound disorders in a rural Ohio school district. Speech therapy using computer-based speech sound intervention materials was provided either by live interactive videoconferencing (telehealth), or conventional side-by-side intervention. Progress was measured using pre- and post-intervention scores on the Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation-2 (Goldman & Fristoe, 2002). Students in both service delivery models made significant improvements in speech sound productio

Scoring written material from the Mini-Mental State Examination: a comparison of face-to-face, fax and video-linked scoring.

We assessed the reliability of scoring written items of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) using different communication modes: face to face, fax and videoconferencing. A total of 99 MMSEs were recovered from the records of a community mental health team for the elderly. The written parts of the examination (sentence and pentagrams) were scored--in person, using a faxed copy or over the video-link--according to published criteria. Relative to in-person scoring, sentences could be scored reliably when faxed (kappa = 0.80), as could pentagrams (kappa = 0.71). Sentences could be reliably sc
