Violence against children: an analysis of mandatory reporting of violence, Brazil 2011.

This article aims to describe and analyze reporting of violence against children from 0 to 9 years of age, issued by the public health services, in Brazil. Data from the Violence and Accident Surveillance System (Viva-SINAN) were used. The frequency of selected variables was calculated by age group (0-1; 2-5 and 6-9 years of age) as well as their Prevalence Ratios (PR). 17.900 cases were reported: 33% in the 0-1 year group; 35,8% in the 2-5 year group; and 31,2% in the 6-9 year group. Physical violence predominated among boys (PR: 1.22; CI 95%: 1,16-1,28 ); 6-9 years old (PR: 1,19; CI 95%: 1,1

Coping and violence exposure as predictors of psychological functioning in domestic violence survivors.

This study examines the differential effects of adult and childhood physical and psychological abuse, abuse-specific coping, and psychological adjustment in battered women seeking emergency shelter. Multivariate regression analyses confirmed the devastating impact of psychological abuse (childhood and concurrent) on battered women's adjustment. The results corroborated prior research suggesting a cumulative vulnerability to psychological victimization in a substantial proportion of residents. Unexpectedly, frequency of physical violence was unrelated to women's distress. The study argues that

A survey on violence education: a report of the STFM Violence Education Task Force.

A national survey of all family practice residency directors was undertaken to assess programs' current efforts in the area of violence education. The survey also investigated directors' views about particular types of violence and beliefs about how involved family practice residency programs should be in educating physicians in these areas. The majority of respondents (59%) indicated that violence education was represented "not at all" or "very little" in their formal curricula. However, there was significantly more teaching about specific types of violence, with child physical abuse, child s

Injuries due to deliberate violence in areas of Denmark. I. The extent of violence.

As part of a transcultural investigation of violent behavior in Denmark and South America an analysis was made during a one year period of the incidents involving deliberate violence as registered at 3 Danish emergency wards, and at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen. In the three emergency wards a total of 1316 victims of deliberate violence were observed corresponding to a rate of about 3.3/1000 per year in a provincial/rural district, the catchment region of Holbaek County Hospital, 5.5/1000 per year in a mainly middle income area of the metropolis Copenhagen, the catchment re

Violence Experiences and Risk for Homicide Among Intimate Partner Violence Shelter Residents.

Despite prevalent use, surprisingly little research has examined how intimate partner violence (IPV) shelter stays relate to violence experiences, including risk for homicide. To address this gap, we surveyed shelter residents to investigate (a) IPV types reported before and during a shelter stay and the differences by sociodemographic factors known to influence shelter stays; (b) extent of IPV homicide risk and significant associations; and (c) empowerment related to safety and risk for IPV homicide. We administered an online survey to IPV shelter residents (N = 241) in 19 programs in Texas.

Single Question vs Ongoing Violence Assessment Tool for Intimate Partner Violence Screening.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) represents a pervasive and costly public health issue. Many IPV victims seek care in the emergency department (ED) due to injuries or related medical complaints; yet a substantial number of cases remain undetected. The challenge lies in implementing effective screening tools within the demanding environment of an ED. In this study we aimed to assess the efficacy of two brief IPV screening tools- the single question, "Have you been hit, kicked, punched, or otherwise hurt by someone in the past year?" and the 4-item Ongoing Violence Assessment Tool-a

Pathways From Early Family Violence to Adolescent Reactive Aggression and Violence Victimization.

PURPOSE: The current study examined how early childhood (EC) family violence and risk (i.e., maternal aggression, sibling aggression, environmental risk) predicted early adolescent (EA) reactive physical and relational aggression and violence victimization through middle childhood (MC) parenting (i.e., guilt induction, power assertive discipline). METHOD: Mother-infant dyads (N = 216; 72% African American) were recruited as part of a larger longitudinal study on prenatal cocaine and other substance exposure. Observations, interviews, and maternal and child self-report measures were collected

The Relationship Between Family-of-Origin Violence, Hostility, and Intimate Partner Violence in Men Arrested for Domestic Violence: Testing a Mediational Model.

Although research has shown links between family-of-origin violence (FOV), intimate partner violence (IPV), and hostility, research has not examined whether hostility mediates the relationship between FOV and IPV. The current study examined whether hostility mediates FOV and IPV perpetration in 302 men arrested for domestic violence. Results demonstrated that hostility fully mediated the relationship between father-to-participant FOV and physical and psychological IPV, and the relationship between mother-to-participant FOV and physical IPV. Results indicated that hostility fully mediated the r

Firearm Violence and Children.

Firearm violence is a global humanitarian crisis and a leading cause of death among children and adolescents. This article synthesizes epidemiologic data, subgroup disparities, psychosocial consequences, and evidence-informed intervention strategies. Particular attention is given to the after-school period, school and community-based interventions, and the role of pediatric clinicians in prevention. Policy implications, gaps in data, and future directions are also discussed. Firearm violence must be recognized as a pediatric public health emergency requiring coordinated action across clinical,

The Effects Of Violence On Health.

Violence in its many forms can affect the health of people who are the targets, those who are the perpetrators, and the communities in which both live. In this article we review the literature on the health consequences of many forms of violence, including child physical and sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, elder abuse, sexual violence, youth violence, and bullying. The biological effects of violence have become increasingly better understood and include effects on the brain, neuroendocrine system, and immune response. Consequences include increased incidences of depression, anxiety, p

The effects of witnessing violence.

Mental health nurses in the UK are 10 times more likely to be assaulted than general nurses, but evidence on the effects of staff witnessing violence is lacking. After researching the effects on ten mental health nurses who had witnessed an episode of physical violence in the previous 6 months, David Jeffrey and Pauline Fuller reported their research findings in Mental Health Practice. The authors found that participants grappled with fear, guilt and anger, leaving them to seek resolution on five themes relating to personal and professional guilt.

The neurobiology of aggression and violence.

Aggression and violence represent a significant public health concern and a clinical challenge for the mental healthcare provider. A great deal has been revealed regarding the neurobiology of violence and aggression, and an integration of this body of knowledge will ultimately serve to advance clinical diagnostics and therapeutic interventions. We will review here the latest findings regarding the neurobiology of aggression and violence. First, we will introduce the construct of aggression, with a focus on issues related to its heterogeneity, as well as the importance of refining the aggressio

Environmental causes of violence.

Violent and anti-social behavior is usually attributed to social factors, including poverty, poor education, and family instability. There is also evidence that many forms of violent behavior are more frequent in individuals of lower IQ. The role of exposure to environmental contaminants has received little attention as a factor predisposing to violent behavior. However a number of environmental exposures are documented to result in a common pattern of neurobehavioral effects, including lowered IQ, shortened attention span, and increased frequency of antisocial behavior. This pattern is best d

Violence and mental illness.

Violence attracts attention in the news media, in the entertainment business, in world politics, and in countless other settings. Violence in the context of mental illness can be especially sensationalized, which only deepens the stigma that already permeates our patients' lives. Are violence and mental illness synonymous, connected, or just coincidental phenomena? This article reviews the literature available to address this fundamental question and to investigate other vital topics, including etiology, comorbidity, risk factor management, and treatment. Domestic violence and rape.

No compilation of women's health care is complete without confronting domestic violence and sexual assault. Long recognized as a health care and physician issue, intimate partner violence continues to be one of the most frequent causes for injury and death to women in the United States and worldwide. According to the Commonwealth Fund survey in 1998, 31% of women reported either physical or sexual abuse from a husband or boyfriend. One in five American women also reported being raped during their lifetime. Careful assessment and universal screening are important tools for the primary care phys
