Bioterrorism potential of haemorrhagic fever viruses - occupational and environmental Implications of filoviruses and arenaviruses.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Viral haemorrhagic fevers (VHFs), caused by filoviruses (e.g., Ebola virus, Marburg virus) and arenaviruses (e.g., Lassa virus, Machupo virus), represent a significant bioterrorism threat due to their zoonotic origins, high mortality rates, and severe clinical presentations. This review examines the potential use of VHFs as biological weapons, their zoonotic transmission dynamics, and implications for rural and agricultural health. REVIEW METHODS: A comprehensive review was conducted using electronic databases, including PubMed and Scopus, focusing on studies addre

Emerging zoonotic diseases and COVID-19 pandemic: global Perspective and Indian Scenario.

The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is one example of the scores of zoonotic diseases responsible for various outbreaks resulting in the deaths of millions of people for centuries. The COVID-19 pandemic has broken the age-old healthcare infrastructure and led to utter chaos. In the shadow of this pandemic, other zoonotic infections like the nipah virus, monkeypox, and langya virus, to name a few, have been neglected. Hence, outbreaks caused by such zoonotic viruses are rising in their endemic areas, like the Indian subcontinent. The mortality and morbidity due to such zoon

The global burden of bacterial and viral zoonotic infections.

Bacterial and viral zoonotic infections comprise a practically endless, ever-expanding list of pathogens that have the potential to induce human disease of varying severity, with varying means of transmission to humans (including vector-borne and foodborne agents) and of varying epidemiology. Not all theoretically zoonotic pathogens are truly zoonotic in practice, the prime example being influenza viruses; aviann H5N1 influenza remains strictly zoonotic, whereas novel H1N1 influenza displays an anthropocentric cycle that led to a pandemic, despite being of zoonotic origin. The burden of diseas

Quantifying and combating zoonotic viruses poised for emergence: Using multiplex receptor screening and decoy engineering technologies.

Viral discovery efforts have uncovered millions of zoonotic viruses across multiple continents, listed on the World Health Organization's pandemic risk register. Over two-thirds of these zoonotic viruses pose significant risks, are poised to infect humans, and expose the limitations of current reactive countermeasures, such as vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and small-molecule antivirals. To mediate infection, these viruses must undergo significant adaptation and exploit specific receptors on human cells, causing "spillover events." Identifying which human receptors these zoonotic viruses uti

Lessons learned from bat and rodent reservoir hosts of zoonotic viruses.

Zoonotic virus emergence is a continued threat to global health, though more than two-thirds originate in wildlife. Within natural reservoirs, bats and rodents are host to a remarkable diversity of highly pathogenic viruses, including coronaviruses, filoviruses, hantaviruses, and more. Yet, reservoir hosts rarely develop disease. In bats, functional adaptations related to inflammasome activation, cell death, and cytokine storm have been noted, while maintaining potent interferon and restriction factor activity. Similarly, in rodent reservoirs, chronic infection with hantaviruses is associated

The (Re-)Emergence and Spread of Viral Zoonotic Disease: A Perfect Storm of Human Ingenuity and Stupidity.

Diseases that are transmitted from vertebrate animals to humans are referred to as zoonotic diseases. Although microbial agents such as bacteria and parasites are linked to zoonotic events, viruses account for a high percentage of zoonotic diseases that have emerged. Worryingly, the 21st century has seen a drastic increase in the emergence and re-emergence of viral zoonotic disease. Even though humans and animals have coexisted for millennia, anthropogenic factors have severely increased interactions between the two populations, thereby increasing the risk of disease spill-over. While drivers

Complete genome sequence of Ikoma lyssavirus.

Lyssaviruses (family Rhabdoviridae) constitute one of the most important groups of viral zoonoses globally. All lyssaviruses cause the disease rabies, an acute progressive encephalitis for which, once symptoms occur, there is no effective cure. Currently available vaccines are highly protective against the predominantly circulating lyssavirus species. Using next-generation sequencing technologies, we have obtained the whole-genome sequence for a novel lyssavirus, Ikoma lyssavirus (IKOV), isolated from an African civet in Tanzania displaying clinical signs of rabies. Genetically, this virus is

Fasciola Species Introgression: Just a Fluke or Something More?

The threats posed by a range of viral and bacterial zoonotic diseases inevitably receive renewed attention in the wake of global pandemic events due to their overt and devastating impacts on human health and the economy. Parasitic zoonoses, however, many of which affect millions of people each day, are frequently ignored. In the case of fasciolosis, caused by infection with Fasciola hepatica or Fasciola gigantica, this oversight has allowed for the expansion of areas of parasite sympatry and thus increased the incidence of hybridization and possible introgression betweenthe two species. Here w

[Diseases and causes of death in native wild birds--a literature review].

Little attention was dedicated to diseases and causes of death of indigenous wild birds compared to poultry until recent decades. The interest of veterinary medicine in the spectrum of causes of morbidity and mortality of wild birds increased with the understanding of the importance of these birds as vectors in the epidemiology of zoonoses and as a biological indicator for the occurrence of substances noxious for the environment. The climate as a natural factor and the influences of civilization as traffic, high voltage lines and oil contamination of the sea lead to a reduction of bird species

[Zoonoses in endemic, free-ranging mammals].

BACKGROUND: Zoonoses are diseases and infections that can be transmitted naturally between animals and humans. Direct and indirect contact of humans with wildlife occur during hunting activities, when diseased wildlife is found and treated, and in shared fields, forests, parks, gardens, and homes. Zoonoses can only be understood and controlled when ecosystems, animals, and humans are considered holistically. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents important zoonotic pathogens that are currently present in wild mammals as reservoirs in Germany. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The literature was searched to dete

Secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in zoonoses. A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare syndrome that is often fatal despite treatment. It is caused by a dysregulation in natural killer T-cell function, resulting in activation and proliferation of histiocytes with uncontrolled hemophagocytosis and cytokines overproduction. The syndrome is characterized by fever, hepatosplenomegaly, cytopenias, liver dysfunction, and hyperferritinemia. HLH can be either primary, with a genetic aetiology, or secondary, associated with malignancies, autoimmune diseases, or infections. AIM: To focus on secondary HLH complicating zoonotic

Zoonoses and bats: a look from human health viewpoint.

Bats are the most abundant and most widely distributed mammals on the Earth after humans. Except Antarctica and some small remote islands, they are prevalent worldwide. Although the actual role played by bats as reservoir or in disseminating zoonoses is still enigmatic a multitude of zoonotic diseases are known to be associated with bats. Such diseases including viral, bacterial, parasitic, fungal and rickettsial diseases, reported from all over the world including India have been briefed in this article as an informative approach because dramatically increased and diversified human activities

Vector Competence of Aedes albopictus for Yellow Fever Virus: Risk of Reemergence of Urban Yellow Fever in Brazil.

The risk of the emergence and reemergence of zoonoses is high in regions that are under the strong influence of anthropogenic actions, as they contribute to the risk of vector disease transmission. Yellow fever (YF) is among the main pathogenic arboviral diseases in the world, and the Culicidae Aedes albopictus has been proposed as having the potential to transmit the yellow fever virus (YFV). This mosquito inhabits both urban and wild environments, and under experimental conditions, it has been shown to be susceptible to infection by YFV. In this study, the vector competence of the mosquito A

A diagnostic void in the Congo Basin: proposing a zoonotic orthopoxvirus as the cause of a hemorrhagic fever outbreak and a call for equitable health security.

BACKGROUND: In February 2025, a fatal outbreak of a hemorrhagic fever-like illness emerged in the Basankusu Health Zone of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a region where the burdens of poverty and infectious disease intersect. Initial field diagnostics for common filoviruses like Ebola and Marburg returned negative, creating a critical diagnostic void and confronting local health systems with a potential "Disease X." This opinion piece analyzes the outbreak's unique clinical and ecological context to advance a specific, actionable hypothesis. MAIN BODY: We argue that the presenting cl

Pseudorabies virus as a zoonosis: scientific and public health implications.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is a herpes virus, also known as Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV), which can cause a highly infectious disease pseudorabies (PR) in a variety of mammals. In the past, it has been debated whether PRV can infect humans, but more and more cases of PRV infection have been reported since 2017. The illness has claimed many victims and left survivors with serious sequelae. This indicates that humans may ignore the zoonotic ability of PRV. This review aims to summarize the pathology and pathogenesis of PRV and speculate on how it infects humans. This paper provides a comprehensi

Relevance of Rift Valley fever to public health in the European Union.

Rift Valley fever (RVF), a vector-borne zoonotic disease caused by a phlebovirus (family Bunyaviridae), is considered to be one of the most important viral zoonoses in Africa. It is also a potential bioterrorism agent. Transmitted by mosquitoes or by direct contact with viraemic products, RVF affects both livestock and humans, causing abortion storms in pregnant ruminants and sudden death in newborns. The disease provokes flu syndrome in most human cases, but also severe encephalitic or haemorrhagic forms and death. There is neither a treatment nor a vaccine for humans. The disease, historical

Hidden challenges in evaluating spillover risk of zoonotic viruses using machine learning models.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning models have been deployed to assess the zoonotic spillover risk of viruses by identifying their potential for human infectivity. However, the lack of comprehensive datasets for viral infectivity poses a major challenge, limiting the predictable range of viruses. METHODS: In this study, we address this limitation through two key strategies: constructing expansive datasets across 26 viral families and developing the BERT-infect model, which leverages large language models pre-trained on extensive nucleotide sequences. RESULTS: Here we show that our approach substan
