BACKGROUND: Virtual reality simulators combined with head-mounted displays enable highly immersive virtual reality (VR) for surgical skills training, potentially bridging the gap between the simulation environment and real-life operating room conditions. However, the increased complexity of the learning situation in immersive VR could potentially induce high cognitive load thereby inhibiting performance and learning. This study aims to compare cognitive load and performance in immersive VR and conventional VR simulation training.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial of residents (n = 31) pe

EXPERIMENTAL OBJECTIVE: To provide a safe, simple, relatively inexpensive, fast, accurate way of quantifying balance performance either in isolation, or in the face of challenges provided by 3D high definition moving visual stimuli as well as by the proprioceptive challenge from standing on a foam pad. This method uses the new technology of the Wii balance board to measure postural stability during powerful, realistic visual challenges from immersive virtual reality.
LIMITATIONS OF CURRENT TECHNIQUES: Present computerized methods for measuring postural stability are large, complex, slow, and

OBJECTIVE: Intensive care unit (ICU) clinicians respond to over 900 alarms per day, resulting in sensory overload that leads to delayed and inaccurate clinician responses. Integrating vital signs into object-based visual displays has been shown to yield quicker and more accurate responses than standard ICU alarm displays. We designed a ring-based visual alarm system that integrates heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and peripheral oxygen sat-uration (SpO2) and evaluated its effectiveness using a virtual reality (VR) testing environment. VR offers significant advantages over traditional setu

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) interventions have demonstrated efficacy for more than a decade for mood and anxiety disorders and emerging evidence suggests they can reduce pain symptoms in both acute and chronic pain. More recently, these interventions have abounded within the commercial and academic sectors, immersing participants within a virtual environment to confer health benefits to users. VR immersion can facilitate the delivery of health interventions by isolating participants from distractors and stressors in a therapeutic environment. While recent studies of VR interventions have

The implementation of specialized follow-up treatment of functional disorders and associated pain of the arm and hand is a challenge. As part of a collaborative project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), an innovative and noninvasive visualization technology was developed that is independent of the location and infrastructure. The virtual reality (VR) system NeuroXR integrates highly specialized and established treatment approaches, such as guided movement exercises, motor imagery and mirror therapy for successful seamless and highly specific sensorimotor r

Objective: The use of virtual reality (VR) has been increasing worldwide, as devices are becoming more sophisticated and provide an escape from reality during the COVID-19 lockdown. This recent rise in the use of VR leads to new side effects being reported, such as dissociative symptoms that may or may not constitute a mental health concern. This retrospective study investigated the prevalence and intensity of dissociative symptoms in VR users, as well as some potential predisposing conditions that may trigger them, and their impact on the subjects' wellbeing. Materials and Methods: We conduct

Background: Symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are often underreported by patients and mainly triggered in the patients private domain, making it harder for clinicians to recognize OCD. Virtual reality (VR) can be used to assess OCD symptoms in the clinician's office. We developed a VR game in order to provoke subjective and physiological OCD symptoms. We hypothesize that (1) the VR game provokes more OCD symptoms in patients compared to healthy controls, (2) performing virtual compulsions leads to a reduction in emotional responses in OCD patients and that (3) the severity of VR

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) has proven effective in the treatment of specific phobias and trauma particularly when in-vivo exposure therapy might be costly (e.g. fear of flying, combat scenes). Similarly, VR has been associated with improvement of chronic pain and of acute pain during medical procedures. Despite its effectiveness as a healthcare tool, VR technology is not well-integrated into common practice. This qualitative study aims to explore the provider perception of the value of VR and identify barriers to VR implementation among healthcare providers.

The integration of electroencephalogram (EEG) sensors into virtual reality (VR) headsets can provide the capability of tracking the user's cognitive state and eventually be used to increase the sense of immersion. Recent developments in wireless, room-scale VR tracking allow users to move freely in the physical and virtual spaces. Such motion can create significant movement artifacts in EEG sensors mounted to the VR headset. This study explores the removal of EEG movement artifacts caused by repetitive, stereotyped movements during an interactive VR task.

INTRODUCTION: Several validation studies have identified the use of certain psychodrugs, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and combined treatment as effective procedures for the treatment of agoraphobia. Recent findings suggest that agoraphobia can also be treated with virtual reality techniques (VRET) as an alternative exposure technique to virtual reality stimuli.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty-seven patients with agoraphobia were distributed into two groups of psychoactive drugs (paroxetine and venlafaxine) and into two cognitive- behavioral procedures (with or without exposure to VRET). Seven virtu

We present a case of urinary tuberculosis investigated initially by ultrasound and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). The MDCT-derived volumetric data were used to generate virtual cystoscopy (VC) images, which revealed a bladder ulcer. The presence of this ulcer was confirmed by conventional cystoscopy-guided biopsy and there was good agreement regarding various features of the ulcer, such as the site, size and shape, as detected by virtual and conventional cystoscopies. VC, a result of simple postprocessing of preacquired MDCT data, proved valuable in the characterization of the bladd

Emerging VR applications have revolutionized user experiences by immersing individuals in digitally crafted environments. However, fully immersive experiences introduce new challenges, notably the risk of physical hazards when users are unaware of their surroundings. Existing solutions, including guardian spaces and locomotion systems, present trade-offs that either disrupt the immersive experience or risk inducing motion sickness. To address these challenges, we propose a novel approach that dynamically rearranges VR scenes according to users' physical spaces, seamlessly embedding physical co

The effectiveness of a multiple components therapy regarding claustrophobia and involving virtual reality (VR) will be demonstrated through a trial which immersed six claustrophobic patients in multiple context-graded enclosed virtual environments (VE) using affordable VR apparatus and software. The results of the questionnaires and behavior tests exhibited a significant reduction in fear towards the enclosed space and quality of life improvement. Such gains were maintained at 6-month follow-up. Presence score indicated the patients felt immersed and present inside the game editor VE.
