Pathogenicity and virulence of NEISSERIA GONORRHOEAE.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea and is an obligate human pathogen, colonizing mucosal epithelia of the male urethra and the female endo/ectocervix, resulting in urethritis and cervicitis. These manifestations represent uncomplicated gonorrhea and highlight the gonococcus as a primarily mucosal pathogen. However, gonococci can ascend the female reproductive tract to cause pelvic inflammatory disease and may disseminate to distant anatomical sites. The gonococcus expresses a diverse array of virulence factors that mediate transmission, mucosal colonizati

Pathogenicity and virulence of Giardia intestinalis.

Giardiasis, caused by Giardia intestinalis, is a prevalent intestinal protozoan infection worldwide. Clinical manifestations are variable, and many infections remain asymptomatic. Disease pathogenesis is multifactorial, involving brush border enzyme deficiency, apoptosis, dysbiosis and increased intestinal permeability. Advances in genomics, genetic tools, and model systems have substantially improved our understanding of the parasite's virulence mechanisms. Giardia exhibits considerable genetic diversity, with distinct assemblages associated with differences in parasite biology. Attachment is

Pathogenicity and virulence of Candida auris.

Candida auris (Candidozyma auris) has emerged as a multidrug‑resistant human fungal pathogen that causes infections of high morbidity and mortality. Notably, it exhibits a unique ability to grow and persist on human skin, thus leading to efficient transmission through skin-to-skin contact. As a result, C. auris poses a significant risk of outbreaks in healthcare settings, especially in nursing homes that care for elderly patients. Most concerning, C. auris clinical isolates demonstrate widespread and, in some cases, untreatable resistance to all antifungal drug classes, including azoles, polye

Thromboinflammation in dogs with virulent babesiosis.

INTRODUCTION: Babesia rossi infection in dogs is associated with severe hemostatic dysregulation and systemic inflammation. The close interplay between innate immunity and coagulation in pathological states, including acute infections, may lead to thrombus formation, termed thromboinflammation, and has been proposed to underlie disease severity and poor outcomes. The objectives of this study were to investigate the presence of thromboinflammation in dogs with B. rossi infection by characterizing the overall hemostatic state, using thromboelastography (TEG) and plasma-based assays, and the syst

Pathogenicity and virulence of Powassan virus.

Powassan viruses (POWV) are emergent tick-borne Flaviviruses that cause severe encephalitis and long-term neurologic sequelae in patients. POWVs are rapidly spread in the saliva of Ixodes tick species during a 15-minute tick bite. In recent years, there has been an increased incidence of severe POWV disease in the Northeastern United States and seroprevalence studies suggest that POWV is underreported. Concurrently, the geographic range of vector tick species has and continues to expand, suggesting that POWV incidence in the US will only increase. Despite the expanding geographic range of vect

The pathogenicity and virulence of Sindbis virus.

Sindbis virus (SINV), a widely distributed alphavirus, is both a foundational model for viral replication studies and an underrecognized human pathogen. Despite its typically mild presentation, SINV can lead to prolonged joint pain and, in rare cases, neurological complications. This review explores SINV's molecular biology and clinical manifestations, particularly its role in causing Sindbis Fever - a self-limiting but potentially chronic arthritic disease. Molecular insights reveal mechanisms of immune evasion, neurovirulence, and persistent infection, highlighting SINV's potential for broad

Pathogenicity and virulence of Mycobacterium abscessus.

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), such as Mycobacterium abscessus (Mab) are an increasing cause of human disease. While the majority of immunocompetent hosts control Mab infections, the robust survival of Mab within the environment has shaped survival in human cells to help drive persistence and cause inflammatory damage in susceptible individuals. With high intrinsic resistance to antibiotics, there is an important need to fully understand how Mab causes infection, define protective host pathways that control disease, and develop new strategies to treat those at high risk. This review will

Comparative study on the virulence of mycobacteriophages.

The global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic affected 10 million people and caused 1.3 million deaths in 2022 alone. Multidrug-resistant TB is successfully treated in less than 60% of cases by long, expensive and aggressive treatments. Mycobacteriophages, viruses that can infect bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis-the species responsible for TB, have the potential to redefine TB prevention and treatments. However, the development of phage-based products necessitates the assessment of numerous parameters, including virulence and adsorption, to ensure their performance and quality. In this work

Pathogenicity and virulence of Aspergillus fumigatus.

Pulmonary infections caused by the mould pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Compromised lung defences arising from immunosuppression, chronic respiratory conditions or more recently, concomitant viral or bacterial pulmonary infections are recognised risks factors for the development of pulmonary aspergillosis. In this review, we will summarise our current knowledge of the mechanistic basis of pulmonary aspergillosis with a focus on emerging at-risk populations.

Pathogenicity and virulence of Borrelia burgdorferi.

Infection with Borrelia burgdorferi often triggers pathophysiologic perturbations that are further augmented by the inflammatory responses of the host, resulting in the severe clinical conditions of Lyme disease. While our apprehension of the spatial and temporal integration of the virulence determinants during the enzootic cycle of B. burgdorferi is constantly being improved, there is still much to be discovered. Many of the novel virulence strategies discussed in this review are undetermined. Lyme disease spirochaetes must surmount numerous molecular and mechanical obstacles in order to esta

Pathogenicity and virulence of Clostridium botulinum.

Clostridium botulinum, a polyphyletic Gram-positive taxon of bacteria, is classified purely by their ability to produce botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT). BoNT is the primary virulence factor and the causative agent of botulism. A potentially fatal disease, botulism is classically characterized by a symmetrical descending flaccid paralysis, which is left untreated can lead to respiratory failure and death. Botulism cases are classified into three main forms dependent on the nature of intoxication; foodborne, wound and infant. The BoNT, regarded as the most potent biological substance known, is a zin

Pathogenicity and virulence of Marburg virus.

Marburg virus (MARV) has been a major concern since 1967, with two major outbreaks occurring in 1998 and 2004. Infection from MARV results in severe hemorrhagic fever, causing organ dysfunction and death. Exposure to fruit bats in caves and mines, and human-to-human transmission had major roles in the amplification of MARV outbreaks in African countries. The high fatality rate of up to 90% demands the broad study of MARV diseases (MVD) that correspond with MARV infection. Since large outbreaks are rare for MARV, clinical investigations are often inadequate for providing the substantial data ne

Pathogenicity and virulence of Burkholderia pseudomallei.

The soil saprophyte, Burkholderia pseudomallei, is the causative agent of melioidosis, a disease endemic in South East Asia and northern Australia. Exposure to B. pseudomallei by either inhalation or inoculation can lead to severe disease. B. pseudomallei rapidly shifts from an environmental organism to an aggressive intracellular pathogen capable of rapidly spreading around the body. The expression of multiple virulence factors at every stage of intracellular infection allows for rapid progression of infection. Following invasion or phagocytosis, B. pseudomallei resists host-cell killing mech

The pathogenicity and virulence of Toxoplasma gondii.

Toxoplasma gondii is a parasitic protist infecting a wide group of warm-blooded animals, ranging from birds to humans. While this infection is usually asymptomatic in healthy individuals, it can also lead to severe ocular or neurological outcomes in immunocompromised individuals or in developing fetuses. This obligate intracellular parasite has the ability to infect a considerable range of nucleated cells and can propagate in the intermediate host. Yet, under the pressure of the immune system it transforms into an encysted persistent form residing primarily in the brain and muscle tissues. Enc

Pathogenicity and virulence of hepatitis A virus.

Hepatitis A is an acute infection of the liver, which is mostly asymptomatic in children and increases the severity with age. Although in most patients the infection resolves completely, in a few of them it may follow a prolonged or relapsed course or even a fulminant form. The reason for these different outcomes is unknown, but it is generally accepted that host factors such as the immunological status, age and the occurrence of underlaying hepatic diseases are the main determinants of the severity. However, it cannot be ruled out that some virus traits may also contribute to the severe clini

Virulence Plasmids of the Pathogenic Clostridia.

The clostridia cause a spectrum of diseases in humans and animals ranging from life-threatening tetanus and botulism, uterine infections, histotoxic infections and enteric diseases, including antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and food poisoning. The symptoms of all these diseases are the result of potent protein toxins produced by these organisms. These toxins are diverse, ranging from a multitude of pore-forming toxins to phospholipases, metalloproteases, ADP-ribosyltransferases and large glycosyltransferases. The location of the toxin genes is the unifying theme of this review because with one

Microbial Virulence and Interactions With Metals.

Transition metals, such as iron, copper, zinc, and manganese play an important role in many bacterial biological processes that add to an overall evolutional fitness of bacteria. They are often involved in regulation of bacterial virulence as a mechanism of host invasion. However, the same transition metals are known to play an important role in host-defense mechanisms against bacteria through Fenton chemistry evoked toxicity as an example. Copper and zinc are used as a mechanism to poison bacteria whereas other metals, such as, iron and manganese are withheld by the predator to prevent recons

Metal acquisition and virulence in Brucella.

Similar to other bacteria, Brucella strains require several biologically essential metals for their survival in vitro and in vivo. Acquiring sufficient levels of some of these metals, particularly iron, manganese and zinc, is especially challenging in the mammalian host, where sequestration of these micronutrients is a well-documented component of both the innate and acquired immune responses. This review describes the Brucella metal transporters that have been shown to play critical roles in the virulence of these bacteria in experimental and natural hosts.

Mechanisms of cryptococcal virulence and persistence.

Cryptococcus neoformans is an environmental yeast that is a leading cause of fatal mycosis in AIDS patients and a major cause of meningoencephalitis and CNS-related mortality around the globe. Although C. neoformans infection is mostly a manifestation of immune deficiency, up to 25% of cases reported in the USA occur in patients without recognizable immune defects, indicating that C. neoformans can develop mechanisms that allow it to evade immune defenses and persist in noncompromised hosts. This article discusses mechanisms and routes of infection and the most important elements of host respo

Biogeography and virulence of Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is commonly carried asymptomatically in the human anterior nares and occasionally enters the bloodstream to cause invasive disease. Much of the global diversity of S. aureus remains uncharacterised, and is not clear how disease propensity varies between strains, and between host populations. METHODOLOGY: We compared 147 isolates recovered from five kindergartens in Chengdu, China, with 51 isolates contemporaneously recovered from cases of pediatric infection from the main hospital serving this community. The samples were characterised by MLST, the presence/ab
