"Slime" dermatitis, a fad-associated chronic hand dermatitis.

"Slime" is the colloquial name for a non-Newtonian viscoelastic putty-like substance that is currently a popular plaything among pre-teens and adolescents. Several ingredients in homemade slime recipes may cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis. We report two children who developed slime-associated chronic hand dermatitis, more prominently on their dominant hand. We review the potential for irritant and allergic contact dermatoses as the causes of dermatitis associated with homemade slime.

[Experiences with disc lenses composed of silicone].

Our study presents the results with a silicone disc-lens (Adatomed 90D) over a postoperative period of 18 months. It includes 47 patients, 42 could be reexamined. The implantation was done after continuous circular capsulorhexis and phacoemulsification with a Faulkner-folder directly into the capsular bag. The implantation was sometimes difficult. Skill and experience of the surgeon are required. The IOL springs forth of the implantation forceps, which can lead to traumatization of the capsule and the iris. Three times the posterior capsule ruptured, in two cases the implantation was stopped b

[Effect of intraocular administration of acetylcholine and carbachol on postoperative intraocular pressure after cataract surgery].

In a consecutive series of 90 patients we examined the effect of intracameral acetylcholine and carbachol on intraocular pressure following extracapsular cataract surgery. In all cases phacoemulsification and implantation of a folded polyhema intraocular lens under healon was performed. After evacuation of the viscoelastic substance from the capsular bag behind the inserted lens and wound suturing we instilled 0.5 ml 1% acetylcholine, 0.5 ml 0.01% carbachol or 0.5 ml balanced salt solution respectively into the anterior chamber. Without the influence of antiglaucomatous drugs applanation tonom

Complications of cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation.

Due to continued improvement in lens design, lens manufacturing, and surgical technique, the incidence of complications of cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation have decreased in recent years. Complications may be categorized into operative and postoperative, both early and late onset. Operative complications include posterior capsule rupture with or without vitreous loss, loss of all or part of the lens nucleus, iris damage, and stripping of Descemet's membrane. Early postoperative complications include pupillary block, hyphema, elevation of the intraocular pressure associ

Research Progress of Wound Dressing Based on Sodium Alginate Composite Hydrogel.

Hydrogel wound dressing has significant advantages in wound treatment. It can shorten the time of wound healing, control the process of wound healing, and effectively promote the healing of damaged tissues in a hydrated environment. Sodium alginate (SA) is a commonly used hydrogel wound dressing material, which can quickly form a three-dimensional network structure hydrogel in a relatively mild environment, but the mechanical properties and stability of a single SA hydrogel are poor. The composite hydrogel prepared by mixing SA with other substances can not only exert the performance of a sing

Obtaining and Characterization of the PLA/Chitosan Foams with Antimicrobial Properties Achieved by the Emulsification Combined with the Dissolution of Chitosan by CO2 Saturation.

A new method of obtaining functional foam material has been proposed. The materials were created by mixing the poly lactic acid (PLA) solution in chloroform, chitosan (CS) dissolved in water saturated with CO2 and polyethylene glycol (PEG), and freeze-dried for removal of the solvents. The composite foams were characterized for their structural (SEM, FT-IR, density, porosity), thermal (DSC), functional (hardness, elasticity, swelling capacity, solubility), and biological (antimicrobial and cytotoxic) properties. Chitosan in the composites was a component for obtaining their foamed form with 7.

Overview of the corneal toxicity of surgical solutions and drugs: and clinical concepts in corneal edema.

Surgical solutions and drugs are important in ocular surgery. These include irrigating solutions, viscoelastic substances, mydriatics and miotics, and a growing number of other agents designed to enhance intraocular surgery and its outcome. Potential for damage to the corneal endothelium and other tissues is related to the chemical composition, pH, and osmolality of the irrigating solutions that bathe tissues. Quality balanced salt solutions (BSS) are usually safe for use as an intraocular solution in patients with normal corneal endothelium. If prolonged irrigation times are expected, or the

Cannabinoid receptor activation in the juvenile rat brain results in rapid biomechanical alterations: Neurovascular mechanism as a putative confounding factor.

We have recently reported cannabinoid-induced rapid changes in the structure of individual neurons. In order to investigate the presence of similar effects at the regional level, measures of brain tissue biomechanics are required. However, cannabinoids are known to alter cerebral blood flow (CBF), putatively resulting in presently unexplored changes in cerebral tissue biomechanics. Here we used magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) imaging to measure in vivo alterations of mechanical properties and CBF, respectively, in the rat hippocamp

Thromboembolic complications in critically ill COVID-19 patients are associated with impaired fibrinolysis.

BACKGROUND: There is emerging evidence for enhanced blood coagulation in coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) patients, with thromboembolic complications contributing to morbidity and mortality. The mechanisms underlying this prothrombotic state remain enigmatic. Further data to guide anticoagulation strategies are urgently required. METHODS: We used viscoelastic rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) in a single-center cohort of 40 critically ill COVID-19 patients. RESULTS: Clear signs of a hypercoagulable state due to severe hypofibrinolysis were found. Maximum lysis, especially following stimulatio

[Taenia crassiceps in the anterior chamber of the human eye. A case report].

An otherwise healthy 15-year-old girl developed an iridocyclitis in her right eye. A contractable living parasite measuring two millimeter could be detected in the anterior chamber, the other parts of the eye remained uninvolved. The patient had close contact with the young dog of the family. By using a viscoelastic substance the parasite could be removed alive without any complications. The tapeworm was found to be too young for having developed the characteristic scolex. Western-immunoblotting gave indirect evidence for infection with Taenia crassiceps, a dog's tapeworm. During an observatio

The use of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose in extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation.

We conducted a prospective randomized clinical trial on the use of 2% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and 1% sodium hyaluronate in the anterior chamber during anterior capsulotomy and nuclear expression in extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation in 70 patients. Both viscoelastic substances helped maintain the anterior chamber and facilitated the operation, although sodium hyaluronate was preferred. There was no excessive intraocular inflammation or toxicity noted with either agent. Patients given sodium hyaluronate had a larger increase in intraocular pressure
