A holistic understanding of challenges faced by people with low vision.

Prior research on visual impairments has documented specific challenges that people with low vision face such as reading and mobility. Yet, much less focus has been given to the relationships between seemingly separate challenges such as mobility and social interactions; limiting the potential of services and assistive technologies for people with low vision. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 low vision participants and examined the relationships between challenges and coping strategies overarching three facets of life - functional, psychological, and social.

The effect of serifs and stroke contrast on low vision reading.

PURPOSE: Patients with low vision are generally recommended to use the same fonts as individuals with normal vision. However, we are yet to fully understand whether stroke width and serifs (small ornamentations at stroke endings) can increase readability. This study's purpose was to characterize the interaction between two factors (end-of-stroke and stroke width) in a well-defined and homogenous group of patients with low vision. METHODS: Font legibility was assessed by measuring word identification performance of 19 patients with low vision (autosomal dominant optic atrophy [ADOA] with a bes

Profile of the Australian College of Optometry low vision clinic.

BACKGROUND: The number of Australians living with vision impairment or blindness is expected to increase substantially due to the ageing population and prevalence of age-related eye disease. In response, the Australian College of Optometry (ACO) commenced a low vision clinic in 2013. The ACO is a not-for-profit organisation providing eye-care services to more than 60,000 Victorians per year experiencing economic or social disadvantage. Consultation fees are bulk-billed to the Australian national health care scheme - Medicare - while spectacles and visual aids are subsidised through the state g

Modification of the UniVision lens for a low-vision bifocal user.

BACKGROUND: A 5-year-old Hispanic male with an ocular history of retinopathy of prematurity was seen for an evaluation of his functional abilities and a determination of the possible treatment options for rehabilitation. The greatest concern was to provide the boy with the tools necessary to ensure success in the educational system. METHODS: A low-vision evaluation was performed and baseline information was obtained, including distance visual acuities, near visual acuities, visual fields and refractive error. This data was then used to determine if, in a classroom setting, the child would enc

National survey of blindness and low vision in The Gambia: results.

A population based survey of blindness and eye disease has been conducted throughout the whole country of The Gambia, and 8174 people were examined. The prevalence of blindness (best acuity less than 3/60) was 0.7% and low vision (6/24-3/60) 1.4%. The causes of blindness were cataract (55%), non-trachomatous corneal opacity/phthisis (20%), and trachoma (17%). An estimated 5500 people in The Gambia require cataract surgery, 4600 eyelid surgery for entropion, and 4600 people spectacles to correct a refractive error which causes a visual acuity of less than 6/18. More than half the current burden

Towards Enhancing Low Vision Usability of Data Charts on Smartphones.

The importance of data charts is self-evident, given their ability to express complex data in a simple format that facilitates quick and easy comparisons, analysis, and consumption. However, the inherent visual nature of the charts creates barriers for people with visual impairments to reap the associated benefits to the same extent as their sighted peers. While extant research has predominantly focused on understanding and addressing these barriers for blind screen reader users, the needs of low-vision screen magnifier users have been largely overlooked. In an interview study, almost all low-
