Vision screening of older drivers for preventing road traffic injuries and fatalities.

BACKGROUND: Demographic data in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand suggest a rapid growth in the number of persons over the age of 65 years as the baby boomer generation passes retirement age. As older adults make up an increasing proportion of the population, they are an important consideration when designing future evidence-based traffic safety policies, particularly those that lead to restrictions or cessation of driving. Research has shown that cessation of driving among older drivers can lead to negative emotional consequences such as depression and loss of independenc

Guidelines for automated preschool vision screening: a 10-year, evidence-based update.

In 2003 the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Vision Screening Committee proposed criteria for automated preschool vision screening. Recent literature from epidemiologic and natural history studies, randomized controlled trials of amblyopia treatment, and field studies of screening technologies have been reviewed for the purpose of updating these criteria. The prevalence of amblyopia risk factors (ARF) is greater than previously suspected; many young children with low-magnitude ARFs do not develop amblyopia, and those who do often respond to spectacles alone. Vision screening outcomes of 4-5 year-olds reflect the social gradient.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Children in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities often do not access follow-up eye care services when referred from vision screenings; whether this is due to lack of availability is not known. This paper highlights the need for vision and eye care for vulnerable children with practicing clinical optometrists well placed to provide vision care. BACKGROUND: Vision impairments develop from a young age and may inhibit learning experiences and impact life outcomes. Vision screening to detect and refer vision abnormalities supports children in their education and prevents

Effectiveness of computerized oculomotor vision screening in a military population: pilot study.

The prevalence of oculomotor dysfunctions associated with blast-induced mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in warfighters has increased as a consequence of recent conflicts. This study evaluated the effectiveness of computerized oculomotor vision screening (COVS) in a military population. Oculomotor functions were assessed with COVS and by conventional methods in 20 U.S. military personnel with and 20 without mTBI. The validity of COVS was determined by Pearson correlation and Bland-Altman method or the kappa coefficient. The repeatability of the COVS was assessed with the coefficient of repea

Outcomes of an elementary school-based vision screening program in North Carolina.

School nurses can play a key role in the detection of significant refractive error. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a statewide school nurse vision screening program by evaluating the outcomes of screening among first, third, and fifth graders in 10 schools in North Carolina during the 2009-2010 school year. Of the 2,726 children who were screened, 7.7% (n = 209) were abnormal, of which 89% (n = 186) were placed into a comprehensive database for follow-up. No documentation of any follow-up was available for 35% (n = 65) of these children. Of the 106 with complete eye exam

Colour vision screening in glaucoma: the Tritan Album and other simple tests.

Results from simple colour vision tests used for the detection of the Type III colour vision deficiency in glaucoma and ocular hypertension are presented. We assessed 49 patients with primary open angle glaucoma, 16 ocular hypertensives, 54 age matched normals and 50 young normal observers using six established tests and the recently introduced Tritan Album. This test was introduced specifically for acquired colour vision deficiencies. Results show in general that individual tests have low sensitivity and poor screening efficiency. The best screening efficiency was achieved by the City Univers

Retrospective evaluation of alternative vision screening criteria for older and younger drivers.

Visual examinations of 12,400 drivers in Pennsylvania were conducted at the time of their license renewal. Static binocular tests of visual acuity, horizontal visual field, and contrast sensitivity at varying spatial frequencies were given to license renewal operators who were unaware that their vision would be tested when they arrived at a facility where license photographs are processed. Examination results were correlated with involvement in selected crash categories over a 3.67-year period, taking (self-reported) mileage into account. Neither visual acuity nor horizontal visual field measu
