The vitamin E status among glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficient patients and effectiveness of oral vitamin E.

The effect of oral vitamin E therapy (800 IU/day) on correcting haematologic variables and on raising the plasma vitamin E level among glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficient subjects with history of hemolysis was studied. After 16 week period there was a positive response to vitamin E administration presented by sustained improvement in blood hemoglobin and plasma vitamin E concentrations. In the meanwhile, the vitamin E supplementation led to reduced reticulocytosis and control % hemolysis.

Ataxia With Vitamin E Deficiency: Case Series, Vitamin E Therapy Response, Founder Effect, and In Silico Analysis.

Ataxia with Vitamin E Deficiency (AVED) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder, that caused by pathogenic variants in the TTPA gene, which encodes the alpha-tocopherol transfer protein. This study investigates eight patients from three consanguineous Iranian families, using exome sequencing (ES) and Sanger sequencing to identify novel pathogenic variants in the TTPA gene. Two variants were identified: c.219T>A (p.Tyr73*) and c.205-1G>C. the first one (c.219T>A) related to potentially founder effects within regions of homozygosity. Clinical outcomes varied among patients based on vitami…

The relationship between Vitamin A and Vitamin E levels and neonatal morbidities.

OBJECTIVE: In the neonatal period, diseases such as respiratory distress syndrome, necrotizing enterocolitis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity, intraventricular hemorrhage, patent ductus arteriosus hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and hyperbilirubinemia are frequently seen, despite being differently affected by the gestational age. This study aims to examine the relationship between morbidities in the neonatal period and serum vitamin A and vitamin E levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, patients who were treated and followed up in the Neonatal …

The Role of Vitamin E in the Treatment of NAFLD.

There has been a growing interest in the role of vitamin E supplementation in the treatment and/or prevention of nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD). We performed a systematic review of the medical literature from inception through 15 June 2018 by utilizing PubMed and searching for key terms such as NAFLD, vitamin E, alpha-tocopherol, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Data from studies and medical literature focusing on the role of vitamin E therapy in patients with NAFLD and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) were reviewed. Most studies assessing the impact of vitamin E in NAFLD were des…

Vitamin E status of infants at birth.

Preterm infants may be susceptible to chronic lung disease and retinopathy of prematurity because of deficient antioxidant mechanisms including deficiency of vitamin E. The aim of this study was to evaluate the status of the antioxidant vitamin E among preterm and term livebirths. Umbilical cord blood samples collected from 40 preterm and 180 term babies were analyzed for vitamin E levels using high performance liquid chromatography. Linear regression analysis was used to examine the relationship of vitamin E with gestational age, birth weight and appropriateness of weight for gestational age.…

Vitamin E and the hypercoagulability of neonatal blood.

This study examines whether vitamin E deficiency has any role in the hypercoagulability of neonatal blood. Blood was collected from mothers and their full-term placental cords. Vitamin E was measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography and whole blood clotting time was measured by recalcification. Cord plasma had significantly lower vitamin E (P < 0.0001) compared with maternal plasma. Whole blood clotting time of cord blood was significantly (P < 0.002) shorter compared with the clotting time of maternal blood. There was a significant correlation between plasma vitamin E and whole blood cl…

Absorption, transport and metabolism of vitamin E.

Vitamin E includes eight naturally occurring fat-soluble nutrients called tocopherols and dietary intake of vitamin E activity is essential in many species. alpha-Tocopherol has the highest biological activity and the highest molar concentration of lipid soluble antioxidant in man. Deficiency of vitamin E may cause neurological dysfunction, myopathies and diminished erythrocyte life span. alpha-Tocopherol is absorbed via the lymphatic pathway and transported in association with chylomicrons. In plasma alpha-tocopherol is found in all lipoprotein fractions, but mostly associated with apo B-cont…

Vitamin E and neurologic function in man.

Despite the well-known detrimental effect of vitamin E deficiency on the nervous system of many experimental animal models for decades, only over the past decade has vitamin E become recognized as essential for the maintenance of the structure and function of the human nervous system. This discovery of the neurologic role of vitamin E in man is due primarily to the identification of a degenerative neurologic syndrome in children and adults with chronic vitamin E deficiency caused by gastrointestinal diseases impairing fat and vitamin E absorption. A compelling body of clinical, neuropathologic…

[Clinical use of vitamin A and E in gynecology].

Dysplasia is an alteration of organ and tissues cellular composition. It means quantitative and qualitative variations (differentiation) of the cells. More recently many Authors have investigated about epithelial neoplasia (breast, cervix, lung, respiratory tract, bladder, colon) and dysplastic epithelial processes and about their medical treatment and prevention of potentially transformative lesions. The view that certain vitamins such as vitamin A (in the form of retinol or its precursor beta-carotene) and vitamin E may protect against the risk of cancer has recently attracted much scientifi…

Status of vitamin E as an erythropoietic factor.

There is now convincing evidence that vitamin E is a specific erythropoietic factor for nonhuman primates and swine. There is no evidence, however, that vitamin E is normally required as an erythropoietic factor for humans and many species of animals. We propose that the lack of a requirement for vitamin E in erythropoiesis in humans is due to a metabolic adaptation that circumvents the need for the role that the vitamin otherwise would serve. There is reason to believe that this metabolic adaptation is deranged in patients with protein-calorie malnutrition. These patients respond with reticul…

Vitamin E: Not only a single stereoisomer.

The recent publication by Azzi and colleagues puts forth the argument that only RRR-α-tocopherol should be considered as vitamin E from a physiological point of view. They base their argument primarily on the assertion that only this form has been used to treat stark vitamin E deficiency in humans (known as AVED, or Ataxia with Vitamin E Deficiency). Azzi et al. also argue that other chemically similar molecules, such as tocopherols other than α-tocopherol and tocotrienols do not provide vitamin E activity. Azzi and colleagues are correct on this second point. An investigation into the biologi…

Liposoluble vitamins A and E in kidney disease.

Kidney disease (KD) is characterized by the presence of elevated oxidative stress, and this is postulated as contributing to the high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in these individuals. Chronic KD (CKD) is related to high grade inflammatory condition and pro-oxidative state that aggravates the progression of the disease by damaging primary podocytes. Liposoluble vitamins (vitamin A and E) are potent dietary antioxidants that have also anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic functions. Vitamin deficits in CKD patients are a common issue, and multiple causes are related to them: Anorexia, d
