Vitreous findings in cases of optic nerve pits and serous macular detachment.

We examined biomicroscopically the relationship between the optic nerve and the vitreous in 17 eyes of 16 consecutive patients with pits of the optic nerve that demonstrated an associated serous detachment of the macula. The posterior vitreous was attached in 15 eyes (88%); the posterior vitreous was partially detached with a vitreous strand terminating at the optic pit in two eyes (12%). Of the 15 eyes without posterior vitreous detachment, 11 (73%) had an anomalous Cloquet's canal that was markedly condensed and terminated at the margin of the pit. During ocular movement, we observed a back-

The BElfast Retinal Tear and detachment Score (BERT Score) in vitreous haemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: To establish if the BElfast Retinal Tear and detachment Score (BERT Score) can be used in triaging patients presenting with vitreous haemorrhage to allow safe differentiation between those with retinal tears and detachments, versus haemorrhagic posterior vitreous detachments. METHODS: Retrospective audit of 122 patients presenting to eye casualty with vitreous haemorrhage excluding trauma and vascular causes. Twenty-two patients were excluded from the study as they had no follow-up. The BERT Score was applied to the remaining 100 patients. RESULTS: Vitreous haemorrhages with a BER

Incidence of posterior vitreous detachment after congenital cataract surgery: an ultrasound evaluation.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the incidence of developing posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) in children after congenital cataract surgery. METHODS: This is a prospective study which recruited 131 children with congenital cataracts who underwent cataract surgery between June 1, 2015, and September 1, 2018. The patients were divided into two groups depending on their post-operation phakic status (with or without IOL implantation). Infants aged from 6 to 12 months from two groups were analyzed as subgroups, respectively. B-scan ultrasonography was performed before the procedure and at 1, 3, 6, 9,

Vitreous inflammatory factors and serous macular detachment in branch retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether vascular endothelial growth factor, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), and pigment epithelium-derived factor are associated with serous retinal detachment (SRD) secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion. METHODS: The subjects were 44 branch retinal vein occlusion patients with macular edema and 16 controls. Patients were divided into 2 groups by optical coherence tomography findings, that is, 18 patients with SRD and 26 with cystoid macular edema. The area of capillary nonperfusion was measured with fluorescein angiography and Scion Image sof

Complications of endodrainage retinotomies created during vitreous surgery for complicated retinal detachment.

The authors report nine cases of endodrainage retinotomy site complications that occurred after vitreous surgery for complicated retinal detachments (RDs). Postoperative subretinal neovascularization developed in four eyes at the retinotomy drainage site. In two eyes, postoperative proliferation at a posteriorly placed endodrainage site created traction macular detachments. Redetachment due to retinotomy opening caused by postoperative drainage site proliferation developed in three eyes. The retinas of all nine eyes were eventually reattached, and vision improved from the preoperative level. T

Efficacy and safety of enzymatic posterior vitreous detachment by intravitreal injection of hyaluronidase.

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of intravitreal injection of hyaluronidase in producing liquefaction resulting in a posterior vitreous detachment. METHODS: Fifteen young pigmented rabbits were randomized into 3 groups that received 5 (group 1), 10 (group 2), or 20 (group 3) IU of hyaluronidase. The fellow eyes were injected with a volumetric equivalent dose of balanced salt solution as control. The rabbits were followed for 9 weeks and examined for signs of ocular and retinal toxicity. The animals were then euthanized and their eyes were examined histologically. RESULTS: Biom

Optical explanation of the gradual disappearance of flying dots in posterior vitreous detachment.

It is well-known that flying dots (muscae volitantes) in posterior vitreous detachment gradually disappear. An analogy for this phenomenon is the optical effect of planets casting conic shadows as they are lighted by the sun (in this case the pupil serves as the light source) and these shadows shrink as the planets near the sun. When the opacities move forward in the vitreous cavity, their shadows are not long enough to reach the retina, so the flying dots disappear. They can also disappear when their shadows fall on the optic disk or when they are mixed with the random pattern of bright and d

Intraoperative observation of the vitreous base in patients with atopic dermatitis and retinal detachment.

PURPOSE: Patients with atopic dermatitis often develop tears around the vitreous base. An attempt was made to determine whether these patients had any abnormalities of the vitreous base that would lead to formation of such tears. METHODS: The medical records and intraoperative videotape recordings of 12 patients with atopic dermatitis and retinal detachment who underwent vitrectomy were reviewed. RESULTS: Tears were located at the ora serrata or in the nonpigmented epithelium of the pars plana or plicata of the ciliary body. The vitreous gel at its base was condensed like fluffy cotton in al

The development of vitreous membranes and retinal detachment induced by intravitreal carbon microparticles.

We induced intravitreal cellular proliferation by injection of carbon microparticles (size 20-70 nm) into the vitreous of 21 eyes of 11 cynomolgus monkeys. Pathological changes were evaluated by light and electron microscopy. At 1 week, there was conspicuous cyclitis showing exudative separation of the nonpigmented and pigmented ciliary epithelium, inflammatory cells, mononuclear phagocytes, and premacular vitreous detachment. At 3 weeks, continued macrophagic response was accompanied by fibrovascular proliferation with ingrowth of vessels from the ciliary body into the vitreous. At 4-5 weeks,

BILATERAL SPONTANEOUS VITREOUS BASE DETACHMENT IN A FEMALE PATIENT WITH NEUROFIBROMATOSIS TYPE 1.

PURPOSE: We describe a unique case of bilateral spontaneous vitreous base detachment in a female patient with neurofibromatosis Type 1 and no known history of ocular injury. This serves to add further to the medical literature. DISCUSSION: Vitreous base detachments usually occur after significant ocular trauma. There is only one other published case of this occurring spontaneously also in a female patient with neurofibromatosis Type 1. CONCLUSION: This suggests a rare association between neurofibromatosis Type 1 and spontaneous detachment of the vitreous base.

[Posterior vitreous detachment and cystoid macular oedema post-cataract surgery: a case report].

The posterior vitreous detachment consists in the separation between the posterior vitreal cortex and internal limiting membrane of the retina. This is the peak of the vitreal para-physiological age-related modifications. This problem occurs in 6% of normal people of age between 45 and 65 years and in 65% of individuals between 65 and 85 years. Several elements can be responsible for vitreous modifications, such as senility, myopia, aphakia, pseudophakia, diabetes, degeneration vitreous retinal hereditary, traumatisms, inflammation.
