PURPOSE: Ewing's sarcoma (ES) and primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) are closely related malignant neoplasms, usually affecting the skeletal system. Extraosseous ES/PNETs are uncommon, with occasional reports of tumors affecting the genitourinary tract. Only few cases of primary vulvar Ewing's sarcoma/PNET have previously been reported.
METHODS: We present a patient with primary vulvar Ewing's sarcoma with pulmonary metastasis who presented at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University of Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Luebeck.
RESULTS: The present report is the third case of a

Frequency of precancerous and malignant neoplasms in young (under 45 y.) women in last 20 years has been analysed in the work. There have been analysed VIN and invasive carcinoma progression, localization, coexistence of HPV infection together with intraepithelial neoplasia within uterine cervix and vaginal mucosa. 50% increase of VIN and vulvar cancer, especially in young women during last 10 years has been found. Earlier clinical stadium of vulvar carcinoma is usually found in this group of women compared with older ones. There has been found high percent of multi-focal localization of the v

BACKGROUND: Vulvar basal cell carcinoma is a rare neoplasm that often displays aggressive biologic behavior. Recurrence after simple excision is common, and metastases have been reported. Early diagnosis is essential and rests upon histopathologic examination of biopsy specimens, since the clinical appearance of these neoplasms may be deceptively innocent.
CASE: A 65-year-old woman was seen with a nonhealing skin lesion on the right vulva. Physical examination revealed a 0.3 X 0.3 cm crusted papule on the right labium majus. A saucerization biopsy was performed. Histopathologic examination of

CONTEXT: Because the skin and modified mucosal surfaces of the vulvar region contain dense apocrine glands and anogenital mammary-like glands, in addition to eccrine glands and folliculosebaceous units, benign as well as malignant lesions derived from these adnexal structures are, not surprisingly, found in the vulva. However, their incidence occurring in the vulva has not been reported, to our knowledge.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of various vulvar adnexal lesions.
DESIGN: We performed a retrospective review (1978-2010) of the cases at our institution.
RESULTS: A total of 189 vu

Primary vulvar adenocarcinomas are rare tumors, and their histogenesis is not fully understood. They are classified into extramammary Paget's disease, sweat gland carcinomas, and "breast-like" adenocarcinomas of the vulva. The latter resemble adenocarcinomas arising in the breast morphologically and immunophenotypically. Rare cases of adenocarcinoma with apocrine features have been reported, and whether these neoplasms originate from the "native apocrine" sweat glands or from "anogenital mammary-like" glands are still debatable. The presence of normal mammary-like glands in the vicinity of the

Vulvar cancer is a rare oncologic pathology, accounting for only 3%-5% of all gynecologic neoplasms, with squamous cell carcinoma responsible for more than 90% of these cases; the remaining 10% includes Paget disease, lichen sclerosus, and vulvar melanoma. Radical vulvectomy has become the gold standard treatment due to the high recurrence rate and effective local control in patients with squamous cell carcinoma stages IB to IVA. To address these needs, various reconstructive options have been reported in the literature, each potentially offering different results due to their diverse nature.

Vulvar angioleiomyoma is a very rare neoplasm. We describe the case of a 49-year-old woman who presented with a small, firm, tender labial mass. Intraoperatively, the lesion appeared hypervascular and was excised using sharp dissection. Histological and immunohistochemical analyses were necessary to make the diagnosis. The report of this extremely uncommon gynecologic lesion is important to make clinicians aware of the possibility of vulvar angioleiomyoma.

BACKGROUND: Encapsulated papillary carcinoma (EPC) is a rare breast neoplasm, typically seen in postmenopausal women, and is exceedingly uncommon in ectopic breast tissue. We report one such case of EPC arising in ectopic breast tissue of the vulva, highlighting diagnostic and management challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old female patient presented with a slowly enlarging, painful cystic vulvar mass. Clinical examination revealed a firm, mobile nodule on the right labia majora. Imaging studies were inconclusive, and differential diagnoses included Bartholin gland cyst, epidermal inclu

Vulvar melanoma is considered rare, but it is the second most frequent vulvar neoplasm; 2% of melanomas in women arise in the vulvar area. It is important to highlight how the characteristics of vulvar melanoma differentiate it from classic cutaneous melanoma. Vulvar melanoma has different risk factors and clinical and dermoscopic characteristics; moreover, it has a higher recurrence rate and a greater likelihood of multifocality. Here, we present a case of a 44-year-old patient with two primary vulvar melanomas located on opposite sides of her vulva. The lesions were both flat, but they had d

BACKGROUND: Primary cutaneous Paget's disease of the vulva is an intraepithelial adenocarcinoma most likely arising from a cutaneous stem cell with sweat gland epithelial differentiation or can be of sweat gland origin. Primary vulvar Paget's disease, however, can be mimicked by an internal noncutaneous neoplasm htat has extended to secondarily involve the vulva. Most commonly, this is due to an anal or rectal adenocarcinoma or a urothelial carcinoma. These malignancies may be detected in a vaginal or vulvar cytologic smear.
CASE: An 81-year-old woman with a past history of urothelial carcino

PURPOSE: Paget's disease (PD) of the breast as well as the vulva is a rare condition that accounts for about 4% of breast neoplasms and 1% of vulvar malignancies. Recurrent disease after breast and vulvar surgery might be a challenge. To evaluate relevant molecules therapeutically, tissue from mammary and vulvar PD lesions was investigated immunohistochemically.
METHODS: Histopathologic samples from 11 patients with mammary PD and eight patients with vulvar PD were stained with antibodies against estrogen and progesterone receptors, HER-2/neu and COX-2 followed by semiquantitative evaluation

Vulvar basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is rare, accounting for less than 5% of all vulvar neoplasms and less than 1% of all BCCs. Vulvar BCCs are usually diagnosed late because they are often asymptomatic and tend to grow at slow rates. They may be invasive and destructive if neglected or improperly treated. Nevertheless, they have a very low propensity for metastatic spread, but frequently recur after simple excision. We report a 78 year-old woman presenting with the complaint of painful vulvar ulceration and vaginal bleeding. The physical examination revealed a 3 x 2 cm indurated nodulo-ulcerativ

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a successful surgical treatment and reconstruction in a case of malignant mucosal vulvar melanoma.
CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old woman had stage II bulky malignant mucosal vulvar melanoma and received wide surgical excision with partial vulvectomy. She underwent 2-steps reconstructive vulvoplasty and vaginoplasty with skin grafting 1 year after initial surgical treatment. There was no evidence of recurrence after 3 years of follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Vulvar melanoma is a rare malignant neoplasm. Wide local excision with reconstruction can relieve pelvic discomfort and rest

The two main precursors of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma, usual and differentiated vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), have distinctive etiology, pathogenesis, and natural history. Usual type VIN is often associated with high-risk HPV and differentiated VIN has de novo p53 genetic alterations that are unrelated to HPV infection. GATA-binding protein 3 (GATA3) is a tumor suppressor that shows increased expression in several types of human malignancies including breast and bladder carcinomas. Little is known regarding the expression of GATA3 in vulvar squamous neoplasms. We have systematica

Fifty-seven female residents of King and Pierce Counties (Washington State) with a new diagnosis of in situ or invasive vulvar carcinoma during 1976-79 were interviewed concerning their menstrual, reproductive, and medical histories. A random sample of women residing in the same area was interviewed for comparison. A greater proportion of women with in situ vulvar tumors than control subjects were of low educational level, reported a history of oral contraceptive use, experienced early age at first birth, late age at menopause, and were current or former cigarette smokers. Menstrual and reprod

Schwannoma is a benign, solitary, slow-growing neoplasm of the peripheral nerve sheath. These tumors are rarely found in the external genital system, and only a few cases of vulvar schwannoma have been reported. Herein, we report a case of a vulvar schwannoma. A 37-year-old woman presented with a 3-cm-sized painless mass of the vulva which had been present for 3 years. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pelvis showed an isolated finding of a 4.6-cm-sized round mass with a well-defined margin in the midline vulvar area. Simple excision of the tumor was undertaken, and histological examinat

Malignant tumors of the female reproductive system are a serious health and social problem, as they are the second most common cause of death among women, after breast cancer. Vulvar tumors represent only 4% of all gynecological neoplasms, and they are fourth in frequency after tumors of the cervix, uterus, and ovary. Ninety-eight percent of all vulvar tumors are benign and only 2% are malignant. Sarcomas of the vulva comprise approximately 1-3% of all vulvar cancers. They are characterized by rapid growth, high metastatic potential, frequent recurrences, aggressive behavior, and high mortalit

Red patches and plaques of the vulva may be manifestations of neoplasms, infections, or inflammatory skin diseases. These diseases can mimic one another clinically; features that generally allow the diseases to be identified on most cutaneous surfaces can be altered in the moist, occluded vulvar environment, making clinical diagnosis difficult. A detailed history and thorough physical examination can point to the likely diagnosis, but biopsy and culture may be needed for diagnosis especially in refractory disease. It is not uncommon for several of these processes to be present concomitantly or

INTRODUCTION: Extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that originate outside the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and share histologic and immunohistochemical features with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Occurrence in the vulva is exceptionally uncommon, with limited reports describing their clinical course and management. Recognition is critical due to potential for local recurrence and malignant behavior.
METHODS: We present the case of a 53-year-old woman with a history of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast who developed a recurrent vulvar mas

Trichofolliculoma is an uncommon, benign cutaneous adnexal neoplasm most commonly occurring on the head and neck. Trichofolliculoma of the vulva has not been previously reported. The juxtaposition of a trichofolliculoma in an excisional biopsy specimen performed for vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN III) created a diagnostic dilemma and prompted a review of our files from 1989 to 2000 for additional cases. A search for benign hair follicle tumors of the vulva identified two additional trichofolliculomas. All three vulvar trichofolliculomas were associated with VIN III. During this same per
