Dandy-Walker syndrome and chromosomal abnormalities.

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a brain malformation of unknown etiology, but several reports have been published indicating that there is a causal relationship to various types of chromosomal abnormalities and malformation syndromes. In the present article, we present a bibliographical survey of several previously issued reports on chromosomal abnormalities associated with DWS, including our case of DWS found in trisomy 18. There are various types of chromosomal abnormalities associated with DWS; most of them are reported in chromosome 3, 9, 13 and 18. We also summarize some other chromosomal

Treatment options for Dandy-Walker malformation.

OBJECT: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of various treatment options available for children with Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) and to evaluate the role of endoscopic procedures in the treatment of this disorder. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective review of 72 children who underwent surgical treatment for DWM during a 16-year period. All patients underwent computed tomography scanning, and 26 underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The initial surgical treatment included ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placement in 21 patients, cystoperitoneal (CP) shunt place

Intussusception following a baby walker injury.

Serious abdominal injury as a result of a fall in a baby walker has not been previously reported. We present the case of a 13-month-old boy who developed intussusception following a fall down five stairs in a baby walker. Attempted hydrostatic reduction was unsuccessful. At operation, a bowel wall hematoma, serving as a lead point, was identified. This case adds another type of injury to the list of those previously associated with baby walker use.

Familial Dandy-Walker malformation and leukodystrophy.

We report the first familial cases with two different types of posterior fossa cystic malformation and a leukodystrophic-like aspect on cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The girl and her brother had severe encephalopathy, marked hypotonia, absent deep tendon reflexes, macrocrania, gigantism, and dysmorphic face and extremities. The girl had generalized seizures. The boy had unilateral cataract and bilateral optic atrophy. The parents were first cousins, suggesting autosomal recessive transmission. MRI showed Dandy-Walker variant in the girl, with cerebellar vermis hypoplasia and expan

Adult onset of the Dandy-Walker syndrome.

We describe a case of adult onset Dandy-Walker syndrome. A 35-year-old woman presented with symptoms of increased intracranial pressure and cerebellar signs. After excision of the cyst wall of the posterior fossa. The patient recovered completely. The role of magnetic resonance imaging in establishing the diagnosis and following the course of operation are emphasized. Possible pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the late appearance of the clinical symptoms and the treatment of this anomaly are discussed.

Three siblings with Walker-Warburg Syndrome.

The Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS) is an autosomal recessive disease entity within the framework of "cerebro-ocular-muscular syndromes". The gene locus is still undetected. Its diagnostic criteria have been firmly established in the literature on newborns or infants affected with the disease. However, a diagnosis of severe pathologic conditions must often be made on the basis of ultrasound examination at a fetal age. It is therefore necessary to examined whether the diagnostic criteria are sufficient to warrant a diagnosis at the fetal stage. We here report on a new family affected with WWS. Tw

Dandy-Walker malformation in the Meckel syndrome.

The Meckel syndrome (MS) is an autosomal recessive disorder classically defined by the triad of occipital encephalocele, multicystic kidneys, and polydactyly. Here we describe 3 sibs with varying manifestations of MS. The propositus had isolated cystic renal disease. The other sibs were both prenatally diagnosed with renal disease, polydactyly, and the Dandy-Walker malformation, an unusual central nervous system defect in MS. These findings are discussed in the context of the phenotypic expression of MS and the nosology of this disorder and the cerebro-reno-digital (Meckel-like) syndromes.

Ocular findings in Walker-Warburg syndrome.

Ocular symptoms are frequently observed in Walker-Warburg (WWS) and associated syndromes. The majority of patients present with malformations of the anterior segment and severe retinal dysplasia. We report on the findings in a female patient with WWS who died at the age of 9 months. Major ocular findings were: severe iridocorneal malformation, a membrane-like structure of the lens and funnel-shaped retinal dysplasia. The retina presented various grades of differentiation with rosettes and atypical sequences of cells, e.g. ganglion cells intermingled between granular layers. The anterior part o

Marden-Walker syndrome in two siblings.

Two siblings are reported who have features of the Marden-Walker syndrome. They have congenital joint contractures, camptodactyly, talipes equinovarus, abnormal facies, global delay in developmental milestones, hypotonia and failure to thrive. About 20 cases have been reported in the world literature. A summary of some of the cases is presented. This syndrome appears to be an autosomal recessive trait in some families.

A case of Dandy Walker cyst with porencephaly.

A 27-year-old gravida two para one mother delivered a term male baby by caesarean section. The baby was referred for enlarged head. This neonate with large head was found to have Porencephalic cyst with dilated Triventricular system. There was a posterior fossa cyst communicating with fourth ventricle. A diagnosis of Dandy Walker Cyst with Porencephaly was made. Ventriculo-Peritoneal shunt was done on the ninth day of life. The baby had an uneventful postoperative period and was subsequently discharged.

Dandy-Walker malformation in the Meckel syndrome.

The Meckel syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition and includes a heterogeneous group of CNS malformations, most frequently occipital encephalocele. We report on 2 sibs and one other unrelated case with Meckel syndrome in whom the CNS anomaly was the Dandy-Walker malformation, an association not previously described. The criteria used to diagnose the Meckel syndrome are also reviewed.

Dandy-Walker malformation in two calves.

Two calves with unusual malformations of the skull and brain are described. Both calves showed doming of the posterior skull due to enlargement of the posterior fossa and cyst-like dilatation of the fourth ventricle. The cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle formed a meningocoele in one calf. Aplasia of the cerebellar vermis was present in both calves. One calf showed agenesis of the corpus callosum. These features are consistent with the Dandy-Walker malformation of man.

Ultrasound diagnosis of Dandy-Walker cyst.

A variety of congenital malformations of the brain can be diagnosed by cranial sonography. Those which alter macroscopic morphology can be recognized and their findings are similar to those seen on computed tomography and pneumoencephalography. The ultrasonic findings in Dandy-Walker cyst are described in this report.

Dandy-Walker syndrome and associated anomalies.

This is a retrospective study of 28 infants and children with Dandy-Walker syndrome: 16 had a complete postmortem examination and 12 are currently being followed clinically. Eleven of sixteen in the first category had hydrocephalus; 10 of those 11 had other central nervous system malformations, and 6 also had visceral anomalies. Four of the five without hydrocephalus had complex cardiac malformations and other visceral anomalies whereas 1 died as a consequence of acute myelogenous leukemia. The 12 children still under surveillance manifest no clinical evidence of significant visceral or centra

The prenatal diagnosis of the Walker-Warburg syndrome.

On the basis of physical features and autopsy findings, a child with congenital hydrocephalus, bilateral microphthalmia, myopathy, severe developmental retardation and multiple brain malformations was diagnosed to have the Walker-Warburg Syndrome (WWS). During a subsequent pregnancy in this family, a fetus at risk for this autosomal recessive condition was evaluated with serial ultrasound examinations. At 15 weeks of gestation an encephalocele was noted. Disproportionately slow growth of the head compared to the body was noted at 36 weeks. At birth, the diagnosis of WWS was confirmed in the ch

Dandy-Walker syndrome: recognition by sonography.

The sonographic appearance of the Dandy-Walker malformation is not well known. Experience with sonography in the recognition of the Dandy-Walker syndrome in four neonates is presented. Three cases were discovered serendipitously: one during obstetric evaluation for uncertain gestational age and two in asymptomatic neonates. The typical sonographic features are a triangular posterior fossa cyst, a dilated aqueduct of Sylvius in communication with the cyst, elevation and hypoplasia of the cerebellum, and variable dilatation of the third and lateral ventricles. Sonography is often the first diagn

Ultrasonic evaluation of the Dandy-Walker syndrome.

Antenatal and postnatal ultrasonic findings of a case of cystic dilatation of the fourth cerebral ventricle (the Dandy-Walker syndrome) are presented. The triangular enlargement of the ventricle visualized ultrasonically was associated with mild widening of the lateral ventricles, and the finding was established postnatally by computer-assisted x-ray tomography.
