Acute and chronic liver toxicity resulting from exposure to chlorinated naphthalenes at a cable manufacturing plant during World War II.

Historical records were used to reconstruct an outbreak of chlorance and acute liver toxicity due to chlorinated naphthalene exposure at a New York State plant which manufactured "Navy cables" during World War II. A cohort mortality study was conducted of the population (n = 9,028) employed at the plant from 1940 to 1944. Vital status was followed through December 31, 1985. The study found an excess of deaths from cirrhosis of the liver [observed (OBS) = 150; standardized mortality ratio (SMR) = 1.84; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.56-2.16]; cirrhosis deaths were elevated to a similar degree

Gender differences in the long-term impact of early-life exposure to war on physical and mental health: Evidence from China.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have examined the impact of exposure to war in early life on long-term health outcomes. However, few studies have examined differences in these effects by gender and type of war. This study examines the impact of exposure to multiple war events before the age of 10 on the long-term physical and mental health of adults aged 65 years and older in China, as well as differences these effects between wars of aggression and civil wars. DATA AND METHODS: This study employed an Ordinary Least Squares model with year and household fixed effects, using data from six waves (2

The impact of social media exposure to war content on emotional exhaustion, anxiety, and work performance: The moderating role of organizational support.

The increasing accessibility of social media has heightened individuals' exposure to war-related content, raising concerns about its psychological and professional consequences. This study examines the impact of frequent exposure to such content on employees' mental health and work performance through the lens of the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection through validated measures of interest War Media Exposure Scale (WarMES), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Perceived Organizational Support

New Zealand Malayan war veterans' exposure to dibutylphthalate is associated with an increased incidence of cryptorchidism, hypospadias and breast cancer in their children.

It is well known that the endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) dibutylphthalate (DBP) inhibits testosterone synthesis and can lead to feminisation in male laboratory animals. Moreover, it has long been speculated that human exposure would result in the similar effects, but this is difficult to study because specific human exposure cohorts are rare. We report increases in the incidences of hypospadias (p<0.05), cryptorchidism (p<0.05) and breast cancer (p<0.05) in the children of New Zealand soldiers who served in Malaya (1948-1960) and were exposed to DBP applied daily to their clothing as an a

Deployment-related toxic exposures, mental health problems, and suicide outcomes among Gulf War era U.S. veterans.

Exposure to toxins, such as pesticides, smoke from burning oil fields, and nerve gas, during military operations have been linked to poor physical health among veterans. However, less is known about how these exposures may affect mental health outcomes, especially those relevant to military populations (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], depression, alcohol use disorder, suicide). The goal of the present study was to examine how any toxic exposure and total toxic exposures were associated with probable current diagnoses of PTSD, major depressive disorder, and alcohol use disorder as w

War across the life course: examining the impact of exposure to conflict on a comprehensive inventory of health measures in an aging Vietnamese population.

BACKGROUND: The majority of evidence indicates that exposure to war and other traumatic events continue to have negative impacts on health across the life course. However, existing research on health effects of war exposure primarily concentrates on short-term impacts among veterans in high-income countries sent elsewhere to battle. Yet, most wars situate in lower- and middle-income countries, where many are now or will soon be entering old age. Consequently, the current burden of exposure to war has ignored an important global population. METHODS: The Vietnam Health and Aging Study (VHAS) is

War-related trauma exposure and multiple risk behaviors among school-going adolescents in Northern Uganda: the mediating role of depression symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between war-related trauma exposure, depressive symptoms and multiple risk behaviors among adolescents is less clear in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We analyzed data collected from a sample of school-going adolescents four years postwar. Participants completed interviews assessing various risk behaviors defined by the Youth Self Report (YSR) and a sexual risk behavior survey, and were screened for post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression symptoms based on the Impact of Events Scale Revised (IESR) and Hopkins Symptom Checklist for Adolescents (HSCL-37A) respec

Childhood trauma exposure in Iraq and Afghanistan war era veterans: implications for posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and adult functional social support.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship among childhood trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and adult social support in a large sample of veterans who served in the military after 09/11/2001, with a specific focus on the potential role of the PTSD avoidance and numbing cluster as intervening in the association between childhood abuse and adult functional social support. METHOD: Participants were 1,301 veterans and active duty soldiers who have served in the military since 09/11/2001; a subsample of these participants (n=482) completed an inventory of current functio

The stigma of widowhood in war and disaster affected communities of Sri Lanka: Contextual paths between trauma exposure and mental health distress.

To add to the dialogue regarding the long-term recovery and wellbeing of war and tsunami-affected women in Sri Lanka, we utilised the Conservation of Resources Theory (COR, Hobfoll, 2009) to inform an investigation of direct and indirect effects. The study was specifically designed to assess how traumatic exposure may represent a form of loss which may associate with related losses in the form of external and internal stigma which may then associate with poor mental health outcomes. The data for this study were collected in 2016 from a sample of 379 widowed women in Eastern Sri Lanka; particip

The social transmission of risk: Maternal stress physiology, synchronous parenting, and well-being mediate the effects of war exposure on child psychopathology.

While chronic early stress increases child susceptibility to psychopathology, risk and resilience trajectories are shaped by maternal social influences whose role requires much further research in longitudinal studies. We examined the social transmission of risk by assessing paths leading from war-exposure to child symptoms as mediated by 3 sources of maternal social influence; stress physiology, synchronous parenting, and psychiatric disorder. Mothers and children living in a zone of continuous war were assessed in early childhood (1.5-5 years) and the current study revisited families in late

A pilot reverse virtual screening study suggests toxic exposures caused long-term epigenetic changes in Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic illness that affects upward of 32% of deployed Veterans to the 1991 Gulf War (GW). The symptoms are medically unexplained, ranging across cognitive deficits, fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, and musculoskeletal pain. Research indicates that chemical warfare agents play a key role in the onset and progression of GWI. The Khamisiyah ammunition storage that housed chemical warfare agents such as sarin, an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, was demolished during the GW, releasing toxicants into the atmosphere affecting deployed troops. Exposure to other c

A Decade of War: Prospective Trajectories of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Among Deployed US Military Personnel and the Influence of Combat Exposure.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common psychiatric disorder among service members and veterans. The clinical course of PTSD varies between individuals, and patterns of symptom development have yet to be clearly delineated. Previous studies have been limited by convenience sampling, short follow-up periods, and the inability to account for combat-related trauma. To determine the trajectories of PTSD symptoms among deployed military personnel with and without combat exposure, we used data from a population-based representative sample of 8,178 US service members who participated in the

Repeated low-dose organophosphate DFP exposure leads to the development of depression and cognitive impairment in a rat model of Gulf War Illness.

Approximately 175,000-250,000 of the returning veterans from the 1991 Persian Gulf War exhibit chronic multi-symptom illnesses that includes neurologic co-morbidities such as depression, anxiety and cognitive impairments. Amongst a host of causative factors, exposure to low levels of the nerve agent Sarin has been strongly implicated for expression of Gulf War Illness (GWI). Nerve agents similar to pesticides are organophosphate (OP) compounds. There is evidence from civilian population that exposure to OPs such as in agricultural workers and nerve agents such as the survivors and first-respon

The impact of frequency and intensity of physical exercise on long-term PTSD symptoms following war zone stressor exposure among military veterans.

Military veterans exposed to war zone stressors are at heightened risk for developing long-term posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Conventional therapeutic interventions often face challenges such as high drop-out rates and limited efficacy, underscoring the need to identify alternative protective factors. Prior research has suggested that physical exercise may buffer trauma-related mental health outcomes. This study examined the longitudinal, bidirectional relationship between war zone stressor exposure and long-term PTSD symptoms among Norwegian Afghanistan veterans, focusing on the moder

Permethrin exposure primes neuroinflammatory stress response to drive depression-like behavior through microglial activation in a mouse model of Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic multisymptom disorder that affects approximately 25-32% of Gulf War veterans and is characterized by a number of symptoms such as cognitive impairment, psychiatric disturbances, chronic fatigue and gastrointestinal distress, among others. While the exact etiology of GWI is unknown, it is believed to have been caused by toxic exposures encountered during deployment in combination with other factors such as stress. In the present study we sought to evaluate the hypothesis that exposure to the toxin permethrin could prime neuroinflammatory stress response and e

Consequences of Exposure to War Violence: Discriminating Those with Heightened Risk for Aggression from Those with Heightened Risk for Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms.

Chronic exposure to ethnic-political and war violence has deleterious effects throughout childhood. Some youths exposed to war violence are more likely to act aggressively afterwards, and some are more likely to experience post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTS symptoms). However, the concordance of these two outcomes is not strong, and it is unclear what discriminates between those who are at more risk for one or the other. Drawing on prior research on desensitization and arousal and on recent social-cognitive theorizing about how high anxious arousal to violence can inhibit aggression, we hypot

Alterations in high-order diffusion imaging in veterans with Gulf War Illness is associated with chemical weapons exposure and mild traumatic brain injury.

The complex etiology behind Gulf War Illness (GWI) has been attributed to the combined exposure to neurotoxicant chemicals, brain injuries, and some combat experiences. Chronic GWI symptoms have been shown to be associated with intensified neuroinflammatory responses in animal and human studies. To investigate the neuroinflammatory responses and potential causes in Gulf War (GW) veterans, we focused on the effects of chemical/biological weapons (CBW) exposure and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) during the war. We applied a novel MRI diffusion processing method, Neurite density imaging (NDI)

The contribution of combat exposure; depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms; and psychological strengths to posttraumatic growth in the Israel-Hamas War among reserve veterans.

OBJECTIVE: While extensive research has documented the negative psychological consequences of military service, less is known about the factors that support posttraumatic growth (PTG) among reserve combatants during active war. This study examined the relative contribution of combat exposure, psychological distress (posttraumatic stress, depression, and anxiety symptoms), and psychological resources (self-compassion, psychological flexibility, unit support, sense of purpose, hope, meaning prioritizing, and nature-self connection) to PTG among Israeli reserve combatants during the "Iron Swords"

"The war within": psychological mediators of the relationship between cumulative stress exposure and self-reported changes in gynecological symptoms among women during wartime.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have tied stress exposure and psychological response, including posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), to changes in gynecological symptoms (pain, urogenital symptoms and menstruation), however the multipartite relationship between these variables has been underexplored. METHODS: An online, cross sectional, survey was completed by 527 Israeli women during Israel-Gaza war. The questionnaires included demographics, gynecological symptoms before and after war onset, and validated scales for exposure to war-related stressors, exposure impact and PTSS. Serial mediation
