Hideo Fukumi: Medical research in the shadow of biological warfare.

Hideo Fukumi (1914-1998) is renowned for his position as the director of Japan's National Institute of Health and his scientific contributions to the fields of bacteriology, virology and epidemiology. This article introduces Fukumi's career cultivated over decades in the Japanese national medical system and focuses on his research on Shigella, Salmonella and influenza. Yet any assessment of his career also has to take into account the considerable controversy and scandal it engendered. This necessary reassessment situates Fukumi's contribution within what has been revealed of Japan's biologica

Current Trends in the Biosensors for Biological Warfare Agents Assay.

Biosensors are analytical devices combining a physical sensor with a part of biological origin providing sensitivity and selectivity toward analyte. Biological warfare agents are infectious microorganisms or toxins with the capability to harm or kill humans. They can be produced and spread by a military or misused by a terrorist group. For example, Bacillus anthracis, Francisella tularensis, Brucella sp., Yersinia pestis, staphylococcal enterotoxin B, botulinum toxin and orthopoxviruses are typical biological warfare agents. Biosensors for biological warfare agents serve as simple but reliable

Unique complications of foot and ankle injuries secondary to warfare.

This article discusses the common complications associated with lower extremity trauma and amputations secondary to combat injuries. The complications include retained fragments, soft tissue adhesions, poor wound healing, painful bursae, neuroma formation, heterotopic ossification, and depleted uranium. Although there is some literature on these topics, most is based on noncombat injuries, indicating a need for further research into the management of these devastating injuries.

Anthrax vaccine. Model of a response to the biologic warfare threat.

Anthrax vaccine is being administered to all 2.4 million active duty, reserve, and National Guard troops, as prophylaxis against biologic warfare. The vaccine's effectiveness in this setting may be limited. This article discusses unresolved issues of safety, with an emphasis on the need for careful surveillance of vaccines used by the military, which has sidestepped the commercial process. Also considered are ethical issues related to the development and use of military biologics, as the United States Army advances its Joint Vaccine Acquisition Program, a plan to produce more than ten vaccines

Toxicology and pharmacology of the chemical warfare agent sulfur mustard.

There have been reports of chemical attacks in which sulfur mustard might have been used (a) on Iranian soldiers and civilians during the Gulf War in 1984 and 1985 and (b) in an Iraqi chemical attack on the Iranian-occupied village of Halbja in 1988, resulting in many civilian casualties. Heavy use of chemical warfare in Afghanistan by the Soviet military is a recent innovation in military tactics that has been highly successful and may ensure further use of chemical agents in future military conflicts and terrorist attacks as a profitable adjunct to conventional military arms. Mustard is a po

Follicular pathway role in chemical warfare simulants percutaneous penetration.

Chemical warfare (CW) exposure could be fatal to military and civilians through skin contamination. Our work and others focus on investigating stratum corneum reservoir with less regards to skin appendageal routes including hair follicles. Here, C-14 CW simulants (CWS) with specific activity of 0.1 mCi/ml were tested on abdominal and scalp human cadaver skin using flow-through diffusion system. Quantitative analysis of simulants in skin compartments were performed using scintillation counter. Assessment and outcome of 496 penetrating gastrointestinal warfare injuries.

AIM: The abdominal viscera are among the most vulnerable organs of the body to penetrating trauma. Proper management of such trauma in war victims at the first-line hospital where these victims are first seen is of paramount importance. We reviewed medical records of war victims suffering small bowel and colorectal injuries treated at first, second and third-line hospitals during the Iraq-Iran War (1980-88) to assess surgical outcomes. METHODS: The medical records of 496 Iranian war victims suffering penetrating gastrointestinal (GI) injuries treated at first, second and third-line (tertiary)

The role of insect-brain-inspired technology in drone warfare.

For many years, the potential for insect-like robots to be deployed in a military context has been explored in fiction, but also supported by research funding from defence agencies around the world. Recent conflicts have seen a rapid increase in the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones); but is this at all related to new insights in insect science? In fact, the key advances behind this expansion are largely the result of hardware improvements, communication infrastructure and mainstream engineering solutions, combining to substantially lower the cost and increase the reliabil

Bioethics and Warfare: Social Responsibility and the Recognition of Shared Humanity.

This paper responds to calls to expand bioethics' engagement with the public health consequences of war. It argues that bioethics can offer more than normative evaluation of conduct in armed conflict; it can contribute to a deeper understanding of human vulnerability and interdependence in conditions of extreme crisis. Such an approach has the potential to reframe state political objectives around the protection of civilians and essential infrastructures. War frequently leads to the collapse or transformation of healthcare systems, exposing profound ethical dynamics that extend beyond battlefi

Wetlands and warfare - implications for hydrologic and biogeochemical ecosystem functions.

Wetlands deliver unique hydrologic and biogeochemical functions, including floodwater detention, wave energy attenuation, and the retention and transformation of elements and compounds. The concept of warfare ecology provides a framework to evaluate ecosystem functions throughout wars three cyclical phases (i.e., preparation, active conflict, and rebuilding). Little research focuses on warfare's implications for wetland functions, and most available literature targets wildlife habitat effects. In response, this synthesis examines wetland hydrologic and biogeochemical functional responses to wa

A review of skin conditions in modern warfare and peacekeeping operations.

Skin is the most exposed organ of the body, and military personnel face many external skin threats. As a result, skin disease is an important source of morbidity among military personnel deployed on combat or peacekeeping operations. This article reviews the most common conditions seen by deployed military dermatologists. A PubMed search was used to identify articles in English, written between 1965 and 2014, using medical subject headings "military medicine" AND "skin disease" or "military personnel" AND "skin disease." The five most common reasons for physician consultation for skin conditio

[Diseases caused by bacteria and rickettsia in biological warfare and bioterrorism].

INTRODUCTION: Until recently, the use of biological weapons was considered more from an academic than practical point of view. The list of agents and/or toxins that can be used as biological weapons is long. Some of them are highly lethal, while others cause morbidity and disability. BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS: Bacteria, rickettsia, viruses, fungi, protozoa and toxins can all be used as biological weapons. The infection may be acquired by inhalation of aerosols, ingestion of contaminated water or food or direct contact with infectious agents. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of these patien

[Analytical and on-site detection methods for chemical warfare agents].

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are fast acting and sometimes lethal, even at low levels, and can be classified into nerve gases, blister agents, choking agents, blood agents, vomit agents, tear gases, and incapacitating agents. As countermeasures against CWA terrorism, detection and identification are important. In crisis management, monitoring of CWAs in public places and security checks at territorial borders, big event venues, and executive facilities are performed for protection against terrorism. In consequence management, on-site detection by first responders and laboratory analysis afte

The anti-plague system and the Soviet biological warfare program.

The USSR possessed a unique national public health system that included an agency named "anti-plague system." Its mission was to protect the country from highly dangerous diseases of either natural or laboratory etiology. During the 1960s, the anti-plague system became the lead agency of a program to defend against biological warfare, codenamed Project 5. This responsibility grew and by the middle 1970s came to include undertaking tasks for the offensive biological warfare program, codenamed Ferment. This article describes the anti-plague system's activities relevant to both aspects of the Sov

[Glanders--a potential disease for biological warfare in humans and animals].

Infection with Burkholderia mallei (formerly Pseudomonas mallei) can cause a subcutaneous infection known as "farcy" or can disseminate to condition known as Glanders. It is primarily a disease affecting horses, donkeys and mules. In humans, Glanders can produce four types of disease: localized form, pulmonary form, septicemia, and chronic form. Necrosis of the tracheobronchial tree and pustular skin lesions characterize acute infection with B. mallei. Other symptoms include febrile pneumonia, if the organism was inhaled, or signs of sepsis and multiple abscesses, if the skin was the port of e
