Holistic approach to odour impact assessment on the basis of three waste management plants.

Odour pollution is a significant challenge associated with Waste Management Plants (WMPs) and is related to the emissions of diverse odorants from organic waste decomposition processes. Assessing odorous emissions requires a comprehensive approach that combines analytical and sensory methods. This study showcases such a holistic approach to odour impact assessment at three WMPs in Poland. Sensory investigations included field olfactometry and measurements of odour intensity, frequency, and hedonic quality, while gas sensors and a photoionization detector monitored ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, an

Intracellular and extracellular antimicrobial resistance genes in the sludge of livestock waste management structures.

The sludge compartment in livestock waste management structures is a potential hotbed for the emergence and proliferation of antimicrobial resistance among bacteria. Little is known about the distribution of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) between the intracellular and extracellular DNA pools in the sludge. The overall objective of this study was to assess the significance of extracellular ARGs to the total ARGs in the sludge of livestock waste management structures. In this study, sludge samples were collected from four cattle manure storage ponds and three swine waste treatment lagoons

Life cycle assessment of solid waste management strategies in a chlor-alkali production facility.

The waste management of a chlor-alkali and calcium chloride industrial facility from southern Chile was the object of this study. The main solid waste materials generated in these processes are brine sediments and calcium chloride sediments, respectively. Both residues are mixed in the liquid phase and filtered in a press filter, obtaining a final low humidity solid waste, called 'mixed sediments', which is disposed of in an industrial landfill as non-hazardous waste. The aim of the present study was to compare by means of LCA, the current waste management option of the studied chlor-alkali fa

6D Building information modelling (BIM) for demolition waste management of semi-submersible wind turbines.

The rapid global expansion of offshore wind is matched by an emerging wave of decommissioning. By the 2030s, over 30 GW of Europe's capacity will reach end-of-life (EoL), rising to 40 million tonnes of material waste globally by 2050, with blades alone contributing approximately 325,000 tonnes of waste per year in Europe if not effectively recovered. This shift presents a risk of waste accumulation and an opportunity to embed circular economy (CE) practices into infrastructure renewal. To address this challenge, this study develops a BIM-based framework for dismantling a semi-submersible float

Challenges and strategies for effective plastic waste management during and post COVID-19 pandemic.

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has enhanced the complexities of plastic waste management. Our improved, hyper-hygienic way of life in the fear of transmission has conveniently shifted our behavioral patterns like the use of PPE (Personal protective equipment), increased demand for plastic-packaged food and groceries, and the use of disposable utensils. The inadequacies and inefficiencies of our current waste management system to deal with the increased dependence on plastic could aggravate its mismanagement and leakage into the environment, thus triggering a new environmental crisis.
