Differential effects of acute total water deprivation on voluntary exercise behavior and body mass in laboratory house mice.

Various studies have demonstrated adverse effects of dehydration on human athletic and cognitive performance, but most are limited in scope. Moreover, few have studied such effects on voluntary exercise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of 24 h of water deprivation on voluntary wheel-running behavior (a model for human voluntary exercise) and body mass in laboratory house mice. To increase the probability of detecting the effects of water deprivation, we studied mice from four replicate High Runner (HR) lines that have been bred for high levels of wheel running. Both sexes

Effects of hydration and water deprivation on blood viscosity during a soccer game in sickle cell trait carriers.

The present study compared the changes in blood viscosity, hydration status, body temperature and heart rate between a group of sickle cell trait (SCT) carriers and a control (Cont) group before and after a soccer game performed in two conditions: one with water offered ad libitum (hydration condition; Hyd) and the other one without water (dehydration condition; Dehyd). Blood viscosity and haematocrit per blood viscosity ratio (HVR; an index of red blood cell oxygen transport effectiveness) were measured before and at the end of each game. Resting blood viscosity was greater in the SCT carrier

A short water deprivation test incorporating urinary arginine vasopressin estimations for the investigation of posterior pituitary function in children.

The value of a 7-h water deprivation test incorporating urinary osmolality and urinary arginine vasopressin (AVP) measurements was investigated in 20 children with suspected anterior or posterior pituitary dysfunction (group A) and 11 presenting with polyuria and polydipsia (group B). A control group of 16 healthy children was also studied. Urinary osmolalities in the control subjects after 7 h of water deprivation were 827-1136 mosmol/kg and urinary AVP 114-320 pmol/l. Of the group A patients, 5 had symptomatic diabetes insipidus with urinary osmolalities less than 300 mosmol/kg, and urinary

ANG II and Aldosterone Acting Centrally Participate in the Enhanced Sodium Intake in Water-Deprived Renovascular Hypertensive Rats.

Renovascular hypertension is a type of secondary hypertension caused by renal artery stenosis, leading to an increase in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Two-kidney, 1-clip (2K1C) is a model of renovascular hypertension in which rats have an increased sodium intake induced by water deprivation (WD), a common situation found in the nature. In addition, a high-sodium diet in 2K1C rats induces glomerular lesion. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether angiotensin II (ANG II) and/or aldosterone participates in the increased sodium intake in 2K1C rats under W

Indicators of dehydration in healthy 4- to 5-day-old dairy calves deprived of feed and water for 24 hours.

Our objective was to identify practical indicators of calf dehydration that could be used in an industry context. Eleven healthy 4-d-old commercial dairy calves were fed 2 L of mixed colostrum, then deprived of food and water for 24 h. Total body water was determined in the fed state using the deuterium dilution method. Body weight, along with a range of behavioral and physiological variables, was recorded 1 h after feeding, then at 90-min intervals through to 24 h. Blood samples were collected at every second sampling to assess changes in plasma hemoglobin, hematocrit, and osmolality. Linear

Homeostatic response to sleep/rest deprivation by constant water flow in larval zebrafish in both dark and light conditions.

Sleep-or sleep-like states-have been reported in adult and larval zebrafish using behavioural criteria. These reversible quiescent periods, displaying circadian rhythmicity, have been used in pharmacological, genetic and neuroanatomical studies of sleep-wake regulation. However, one of the important criteria for sleep, namely sleep homeostasis, has not been demonstrated unequivocally. To study rest homeostasis in zebrafish larvae, we rest-deprived 1-week-old larvae with a novel, ecologically relevant method: flow of water. Stereotyped startle responses to sensory stimuli were recorded after th

Enhanced expression of heme oxygenase-1 and carbon monoxide excitatory effects in oxytocin and vasopressin neurones during water deprivation.

A growing body of evidence indiates that carbon monoxide (CO) acts as a gas neurotransmitter within the central nervous system. Although CO has been shown to affect neurohypophyseal hormone release in response to osmotic stimuli, the precise sources, targets and mechanisms underlying the actions of CO within the magnocellular neurosecretory system remain largely unknown. In the present study, we combined immunohistochemistry and patch-clamp electrophysiology to study the cellular distribution of the CO-synthase enzyme heme oxygenase type 1 (HO-1), as well as the actions of CO on oxytocin (OT)

Water deprivation affects serotoninergic system and glycoprotein secretion in the sub-commissural organ of a desert rodent Meriones shawi.

Water deprivation is a stress that has been associated with activation of several endocrine systems, including circumventricular organs of the central nervous system. The sub-comissural organ (SCO), characterized by its glycoprotein secretion called Reissner's fiber has been suggested to play a role in the regulation of body water balance. Meriones shawi, a semi-desertic rodent characterized by its resistance to long periods of thirst was subjected to water deprivation for 1 and 3 months. Effect of water deprivation was evaluated immunohistochemically on 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT; serotonin) s

A COMBINED OUTPATIENT AND INPATIENT OVERNIGHT WATER DEPRIVATION TEST IS EFFECTIVE AND SAFE IN DIAGNOSING PATIENTS WITH POLYURIA-POLYDIPSIA SYNDROME.

OBJECTIVE: The water deprivation test (WDT) is widely used for the differential diagnosis of the polyuria-polydipsia syndrome (PPS). However, it is inconvenient and may not always be precise in differentiating partial forms of diabetes insipidus (DI) from primary polydipsia (PP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of a combined outpatient and inpatient overnight WDT protocol that included an overnight unsupervised period concerning its feasibility and safety. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of clinical data and laboratory results of 52 patients with PPS undergoin

Comparative Diagnostic Performance of Copeptin After Hypertonic Saline Infusion Versus Water Deprivation Test in Pediatric Patients with Polyuria-Polydipsia Syndrome.

Differentiating central diabetes insipidus (CDI), nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI), and primary polydipsia (PP) in pediatric patients with polyuria-polydipsia syndrome (PPS) remains a clinical challenge. The water deprivation test (WDT) is the traditional gold standard; however, it is time-consuming, burdensome, and prone to equivocal results. Stimulated copeptin, a surrogate marker of vasopressin, has emerged as a promising diagnostic alternative. We conducted a prospective, observational, cross-sectional study involving 27 pediatric patients (ages 2-17) presenting with PPS. Each patient

Mineral and glycerol concentrations in drinking water on body weight loss and acid-base balance in feed-deprived Holstein bulls.

Situations in which cattle are feed-deprived over extensive periods of time are common in the context of transport and is an animal welfare concern which may also compromise growth and carcass yield grade. This study investigated how the main components of an oral rehydration solution would affect BW loss and blood parameters in feed-deprived bulls. Three dose-response experiments were performed with 24 bulls each (n = 6 per treatment) to study the effect of mineral concentration in Study I (0, 100, 200 and 300 mOsm/kg), the K+ to Na+ ratio in Study II (25:75, 40:60, 60:40 and 75:25), and glyc

The effect of food and water deprivation on post-stress analgesia in mice and levels of beta-endorphin and dynorphin in blood plasma and hypothalamus.

Pain sensitivity of food and/or water-deprived male mice was tested on a hotplate. The most pronounced analgesia ensued in animals given no food and water, and no food but water ad libitum, the least one in water-deprived mice. The magnitude of the rise in pain threshold depended on the duration of deprivation and was correlated with the increase in the blood plasma beta-endorphin level. In the hypothalamus beta-endorphin level increased after 72-h food deprivation only. The level of dynorphin remained unchanged. Naloxone (10 mg/kg) almost completely reversed food or water-deprivation induced

Water deprivation does not augment sympathetic or pressor responses to sciatic afferent nerve stimulation in rats or to static exercise in humans.

Excess dietary salt intake excites central sympathetic networks, which may be related to plasma hypernatremia. Plasma hypernatremia also occurs following water deprivation (WD). The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that WD induces hypernatremia and consequently augments sympathetic and pressor responses to sympathoexcitatory stimuli in rats and humans. Sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) and arterial blood pressure (ABP) responses to sciatic afferent nerve stimulation (2-20 Hz) and chemical stimulation of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) were assessed in rats after 48 h of

Recurrent 3-day cycles of water deprivation for over a month depress mating behaviour but not semen characteristics of adult rams.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of water deprivation (WD) on reproductive traits of rams. Ten mature rams were used and allocated to two groups balanced for body weight. Control (C) rams had free access to drinking water, while water-restricted rams (WD) were deprived from water for 3 consecutive days and early on the morning of day 4, they had ad libitum access to water for 24 h, similar to C animals. The experiment lasted 32 days, that is eight 4-day cycles of water deprivation and subsequent watering. Feed and water intake were significantly affected by water deprivation; in comp

The water deprivation test and a potential role for the arginine vasopressin precursor copeptin to differentiate diabetes insipidus from primary polydipsia.

The water deprivation test is the gold standard test to differentiate central or nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (DI) from primary polydipsia (PP) in patients with polyuria and polydipsia. Few studies have addressed the diagnostic performance of this test. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the standard water deprivation test, including plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) measurements, in 40 consecutive patients with polyuria. We compared initial test results with the final clinical diagnosis, i.e., no DI, central DI, or nephrogenic DI. The me

Little or no response to 24-hr water-deprivation of Fos-like immunoreactivity in vasopressinergic magnocellular neurons in the hypothalamus of hereditary microphthalmic rats.

In normal rats, 24-hr water-deprivation was found to cause a significant increase in the plasma concentration of arginine vasopressin (AVP), and marked induction of Fos in the AVP-positive magnocellular neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and the supraoptic nucleus (SON) of the hypothalamus. On the other hand, 24-hr water-deprivation also caused a significant increase in the plasma AVP concentration in hereditary microphthalmic rats, but much less than in normal rats. Consistent with this, the extent of induction of Fos in the nuclei of the PVN and SON of these rats was lesser than in

Comparative quantitative ultrastructural studies of the choroidal epithelium of hydrocephalic (hpy/hpy) and normal mice, and the effect of stress induced by water deprivation.

Animals homozygous for the recessive, pleiotropic, mutation hpy(hydrocephalic-polydactyl) develop hydrocephalus early in the postnatal period. The condition develops in the apparent absence of any overt indications of obstruction in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage system suggesting a continued, inappropriate, secretion of CSF. Electron microscope investigations were undertaken to both characterize and quantify the cell types present in the choroidal epithelium of mutants and their wild-type littermates and to gauge their response to a prolonged (24 h) deprivation of water, which has sev
