Ensuring microbial water quality for on-site water reuse: Importance of online sensors for reliable operation.

A growing number of cities and regions are promoting or mandating on-site treatment and reuse of wastewater, which has resulted in the implementation of several thousand on-site water reuse systems on a global scale. However, there is only limited information on the (microbial) water quality from implemented systems. The focus of this study was on two best-in-class on-site water reuse systems in Bengaluru, India, which typically met the local water quality requirements during monthly compliance testing. This study aimed to (i) assess the microbial quality of the reclaimed water at a high tempo

Insight into mixed chlorine/chloramines conversion and associated water quality variability in drinking water distribution systems.

Mixed chlorine/chloramines are common in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs); however, their transformation and impact on chemical and microbial characteristics are not well understood. We systematically investigated water quality parameters associated with mixed chlorine/chloramine species conversion in 192 samples (including raw, finished, and tap water) collected throughout the year in a city in East China. Various chlorine/chloramine species (free chlorine, monochloramine [NH2Cl], dichloramine [NHCl2], and organic chloramines [OC]) were detected in both chlorinated and chloraminate

Four buildings and a flush: Lessons from degraded water quality and recommendations on building water management.

A reduction in building occupancy can lead to stagnant water in plumbing, and the potential consequences for water quality have gained increasing attention. To investigate this, a study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on water quality in four institutional buildings. Two of these buildings were old (>58 years) and large (>19,000 m2), while the other two were new (>13 years) and small (<11,000 m2). The study revealed significant decreases in water usage in the small buildings, whereas usage remained unchanged in the large buildings. Initial analysis found that residual chlo

Emerging contaminants of public health significance as water quality indicator compounds in the urban water cycle.

The contamination of the urban water cycle (UWC) with a wide array of emerging organic compounds (EOCs) increases with urbanization and population density. To produce drinking water from the UWC requires close examination of their sources, occurrence, pathways, and health effects and the efficacy of wastewater treatment and natural attenuation processes that may occur in surface water bodies and groundwater. This paper researches in details the structure of the UWC and investigates the routes by which the water cycle is increasingly contaminated with compounds generated from various anthropoge

Health gains from solar water disinfection (SODIS): evaluation of a water quality intervention in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

In developing countries, the burden of diarrhoea is still enormous. One way to reduce transmission of pathogens is by water quality interventions. Solar water disinfection (SODIS) is a low-cost and simple method to improve drinking water quality on household level. This paper evaluates the implementation of SODIS in slum areas of Yaoundé, Cameroon. Promoters trained 2,911 households in the use of SODIS. Two surveys with randomly selected households were conducted before (N=2,193) and after (N=783) the intervention. Using a questionnaire, interviewers collected information on the health status

In Situ Water Quality Monitoring for the Assessment of Algae and Harmful Substances in Water Bodies with Consideration of Uncertainties.

Harmful algal blooms, particularly those caused by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and green algae, pose an increasing risk to aquatic ecosystems and public health. This risk is intensified by climate change and nutrient pollution. This study presents a methodology for in situ monitoring and assessment of algal contamination in surface waters, combining UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy with a fuzzy pattern classifier for consideration of uncertainties. The system incorporates detailed data pre-processing to minimise measurement uncertainty and uses full-spectrum feature extraction to enha

Assessment of water quality and microbial contamination in institutional water resources: a necessity to understand health risks.

Lack of regular monitoring of water sources may lead to undetected contamination, posing serious health risks and necessitating regular water quality assessments. Sampling for physicochemical, microbial analyses, and online surveys across three higher education institutions was done to evaluate water quality. Spatiotemporal variations among physicochemical parameters showed that the pH, EC, and TDS decreased during the wet season, reflecting the dilution effect of rain. However, DO increased from 0.67 to 4.83 ppm, indicating better aeration. PCA showed seasonal variability, whereas the correla

Importance of water level management for peatland outflow water quality in the face of climate change and drought.

The impact of different climate scenarios, drought, and water level management on the outflow water quality of peatlands has been investigated. A mesocosm experiment has been conducted within climate control chambers to simulate current (2016-2019 real-time) and future representative concentration pathway (RCP) climate scenarios (RCP 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5). To assess the efficiency of a management strategy for improving peatland water quality, water level adjustment was applied to half of the system at the same time for each climate scenario. Furthermore, the mesocosm experienced the 2018 European

Water and soil pollution as determinant of water and food quality/contamination and its impact on male fertility.

Over the past two decades, public health has focused on the identification of environmental chemical factors that are able to adversely affect hormonal function, known as endocrine disruptors (EDs). EDs mimic naturally occurring hormones like estrogens and androgens which can in turn interfere with the endocrine system. As a consequence, EDs affect human reproduction as well as post and pre-natal development. In fact, infants can be affected already at prenatal level due to maternal exposure to EDs. In particular, great attention has been given to those chemicals, or their metabolites, that ha

Spatial patterning of water quality in Biscayne Bay, Florida as a function of land use and water management.

An objective classification analysis was performed on a water quality data set from 25 sites collected monthly during 1994-2003. The water quality parameters measured included: TN, TON, DIN, NH4+, NO3-, NO2-, TP, SRP, TN:TP ratio, TOC, DO, CHL A, turbidity, salinity and temperature. Based on this spatial analysis, Biscayne Bay was divided into five zones having similar water quality characteristics. A robust nutrient gradient, driven mostly by dissolved inorganic nitrogen, from alongshore to offshore in the main Bay, was a large determinant in the spatial clustering. Two of these zones (Alongs

Freshwater salinization syndrome limits management efforts to improve water quality.

Freshwater Salinization Syndrome (FSS) refers to groups of biological, physical, and chemical impacts which commonly occur together in response to salinization. FSS can be assessed by the mobilization of chemical mixtures, termed "chemical cocktails", in watersheds. Currently, we do not know if salinization and mobilization of chemical cocktails along streams can be mitigated or reversed using restoration and conservation strategies. We investigated 1) the formation of chemical cocktails temporally and spatially along streams experiencing different levels of restoration and riparian forest con

Success factors for citizen science projects in water quality monitoring.

Attempts to monitor the quality of freshwater resources on a global scale unveil huge data lacks. Involving citizens in data collection has potential to resolve this lack of water quality data. However, it is widely unclear which factors drive the success of citizen science activities. Based on a systematic literature review of 56 peer-reviewed research articles, we identify three sets of factors for successful citizen science projects in water quality monitoring: (i) attributes of citizens (knowledge and experience in collecting data, awareness of environmental problems, motivation, and socio

Development of Miniaturized Water Quality Monitoring System Using Wireless Communication.

Recently, environmental pollution resulting from industrial waste has been emerging in an endless stream. The industrial waste contains chemical materials, heavy metal ions, and other toxic materials. Once the industrial waste is discharged without standards, it might lead to water or environmental pollution. Hence, it has become more important to provide evidence-based water quality monitoring. The use of a multifunctional miniaturized water quality monitoring system (WQMS), that contains continuous monitoring, water quality monitoring, and wireless communication applications, simultaneously,

Measuring Phosphorus Release in Laboratory Microcosms for Water Quality Assessment.

Phosphorus (P) is a critical limiting nutrient in agroecosystems requiring careful management to reduce transport risk to aquatic environments. Routine laboratory measures of P bioavailability are based on chemical extractions performed on dried samples under oxidizing conditions. While useful, these tests are limited with respect to characterizing P release under prolonged water saturation. Labile orthophosphate bound to oxidized iron and other metals can rapidly desorb to solution in reducing environments, increasing P mobilization risk to surface runoff and groundwater. To better quantify P

Integrating molecular biomarkers and ectoparasitic infestation to assess water quality.

Fish and their ectoparasites serve as model organisms for evaluating aquatic ecosystem health and can thus function as bioindicators of environmental pollution. This study, therefore, investigates the gene expression of biomarkers of effect in Clarias gariepinus inhabiting a polluted drain called the Kitchener Drain and the Nile River (a reference habitat). Ectoparasites and metacercariae of digenean endoparasites on the collected fish were examined to further clarify the impact of pollution. Compared with the Nile River, the Kitchener Drain contained significantly elevated concentrations of h

Highly sensitive standardized toxicity biosensors for rapid water quality warning.

Microbial electrochemical sensor (MES) using electroactive biofilm (EAB) as the sensing element represents a broad-spectrum technology for early warning of biotoxicity of water samples. However, its commercial application is impeded by limited sensitivity and repeatability. Here, we proposed a layered standardized EAB (SEAB) with enriched Geobacter anodireducens SD-1 in the inner layer and self-matched outer layer. The SEAB sensors showed a 2.3 times higher sensitivity than conventional EAB acclimated directly from wastewater (WEAB). A highly repeatable response sensitivity was concentrated at
