Identification of Acantamoeba isolated from water resources located in the northwest of Iran by using the high-resolution melting analysis assay.

BACKGROUND: Free-living amoebae (FLA), such as Acanthamoeba, are protozoan parasites that take advantage of opportunities with a widespread distribution in various environmental sources, such as a wide range of water sources. The amoeba can accidentally infect individuals and cause a variety of diseases, including amoebic encephalitis and keratitis, in both immunocompetent and immune-deficient individuals. The amoeba can act as reservoirs and carriers for pathogenic microorganisms, increasing the risk of pathogenicity in humans. The objective of this research was to identify the genotypes, bes

Optimization of Water-Nitrogen-Salinity Management for Improving Yield, Quality, and Resource Use Efficiency of Pigment Pepper Under Brackish Water Irrigation in Arid Regions.

Brackish water utilization provides an alternative strategy for alleviating freshwater scarcity in arid agricultural regions; however, the synergistic regulation of salinity, irrigation, and nitrogen management remains unclear. A two-year field experiment was conducted in 2025 and 2026 to investigate the effects of water-nitrogen-salinity interactions on growth, yield formation, resource use efficiency, and fruit quality of pigment pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) under arid conditions in Xinjiang, China. An L9(33) orthogonal experimental design was adopted with three levels of brackish water salin

Prospective Water Supply Mix for Life Cycle Assessment and Resource Policy Support-Assessment of Forecasting Scenarios Accounting for Future Changes in Water Demand and Availability.

Freshwater comes from different sources unevenly distributed over time and space around the world and plays a key role in the planning of all social and economic sectors on a regional scale. In this context, a consistent framework for modeling regional water supply mix (WSmix) at a worldwide scale has already been developed for use in life cycle assessment (LCA). However, changes in water sources, driven by climate and socio-economic changes, will occur, affecting WSmix. This study aims to assess the need for a Prospective WSmix (P-WSmix) for implementation in LCA and water footprint studies a

Peritoneal dialysis effluent as a non-potable water resource: Biochemical and microbiological characterization compared to treated wastewater.

BackgroundThe global water crisis poses challenges for water-intensive sectors, such as healthcare. In Mexico, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is used by almost half of patients on renal replacement therapy, generating significant volumes of peritoneal dialysis effluent (PDE) that are discarded without reuse. Unlike haemodialysis effluents, whose reuse has already been demonstrated, PDE lacks technical evidence regarding its biochemical and microbiological safety for potential non-potable applications. The objective of this study was to biochemically and microbiologically char

Turning waste into a resource: coal fly ash as a sustainable approach for heavy metal removal in contaminated waters.

Effective, low-cost water treatment approaches are needed to address increasing heavy metal contamination, particularly in the developing world. This study evaluates the use of fly ash, a waste byproduct from coal combustion, as a sustainable adsorbent to remove cadmium (Cd2+), cobalt (Co2+), and lead (Pb2+) from aqueous solutions. Two types of fly ash sourced from different power plants in the southeastern United States were evaluated in this study: Belews Creek fly ash (BFA), which was untreated, and Wateree Station fly ash (WFA), which was processed using a proprietary carbon burnout method

Estuarine salinity prediction using empirical mode decomposition and random forest for supporting water resource management.

Seawater intrusion during dry seasons presents significant challenges to water supply security and estuarine ecosystem management, highlighting the need for accurate salinity forecasting. However, the non-stationary nature of estuarine salinity time series complicates its prediction. This study employs Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) to decompose inputs (runoff, tide level, wind) and outputs (salinity) into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and integrates them with Random Forest (RF) for forecasting in the Pearl River Estuary. Seven hybrid models under the three EMD decomposition frameworks (

Nutritional Profiles of Ruditapes philippinarum and the Complementary Food-Resource Potential of the Warm-Water Clam Ruditapes variegatus.

The sustained decline in Japanese Manila clam landings has increased interest in complementary bivalve food resources. This descriptive study compared one pooled soft-tissue analytical sample from each of four sources: Ruditapes philippinarum from Akkeshi, Mangoku-ura, and a commercial Chinese-origin source, and the warm-water clam Ruditapes variegatus from Ishigaki Island. Each pooled sample comprised approximately 250 g of soft tissue from at least 40 individuals; independent lot-level biological replication was not available, so no inferential statistical comparisons were made. Exploring the use of water resource recovery facility instrument data to visualise dynamic resilience to environmental stressors.

Water resource recovery facilities (WRRF) face increasingly dynamic stressors, such as higher rainfall intensity and extended dry periods, which can exert stress on ageing water infrastructure and processes. These events can generate process stresses, which lead to wastewater process failures which result in pollution events that could be identified from instrument data used for operational/compliance monitoring. This extraction can be performed on two levels (1) for discrete processes that generate data to monitor process control variables and (2) at the WRRF process boundary (global), which

Geochemistry of some fluoride and nitrate enriched water resources from the Oriental Basin: a prospective health risk hotspot from eastern-central Mexico.

In attention to the Sustainable Development Goal 6, the quality evaluation of water resources in Mexico is limited compared to other regions. This study provided new data from Oriental Basin, an important socio-economic region with up to 20% population growth over the last decade by assessing groundwater from the Libres-Oriental aquifer (Ca-Mg-HCO3 facies; F-: 2.5-9.9 mg/L; NO3-: up to 75.3 mg/L) and water from the Totolcingo Lake (Na-Cl facies; F-: 12.7-13.2 mg/L; NO3-: < 0.75 mg/L). Fluoride content grouped about 80% groundwater samples as promotor of dental and skeletal fluorosis. Nitrate P

Evaluation of coupled SWAT-MODFLOW-NWT model for conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater resources in the Mahabad plain of Iran.

The Urmia Lake Basin has been severely affected by the unbalanced exploitation of water resources. To better manage the use of integrated water resources, the coupled SWAT-MODFLOW-NWT was adopted for the Mahabad Plain in the Urmia Lake Basin, N.W. Iran. The results indicated that a multifunctional calibration of SWAT and MODFLOW-NWT hydrological models in a large-scale irrigated area was necessary, using parameters such as evapotranspiration and crop yield in addition to the usual surface runoff and water table measures. The coupled model was then used to evaluate several water allocation scen

From nuisance to resource: a global review of water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes (Mart.)) valorisation for sustainable development.

Water hyacinth (WH), one of the world's most invasive aquatic plants, is increasingly being recognised as a valuable biomass resource for energy, agriculture, environmental remediation, and industrial applications. However, existing studies have largely examined these utilisation pathways in isolation, limiting understanding of their combined potential within sustainable development frameworks. This review presents a novel, integrated global synthesis of WH valorisation by simultaneously evaluating technological advances, ecological implications, and socio-economic dimensions. It maps emerging

Copper immobilization and resource recovery from acidic copper mine water based on algae and bioelectrochemical system.

Acidic copper mine water, characterized by its organic matter scarcity, low pH, and high Cu2+ pollution, presents major challenges due to limitations in traditional biological treatment and the high costs of physicochemical methods. There is an urgent need for an efficient treatment and resource recovery process. Algae could adsorb and immobilize Cu2+, and the secondary metabolic organics could be metabolized by bacteria, which compensates for the shortcomings of algae. Enhanced by the metabolic advantages of algae and bacteria, coupled with efficient electron transfer and ion migration, the a

Risk assessment of water resource shortages in the Aksu River basin of northwest China under climate change.

As most of the runoff resulting from snow-ice melt is related to climate change factors in the arid region of northwest China, the risk to water resource systems threatens the socio-economic and ecological environment and is becoming increasingly prevalent. Therefore, we explored the risks of water resource shortages for different periods (2010, 2020, and 2030) in the Aksu River basin (ARB) in the northwest arid region of China by reconstructing a risk model based on the framework proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with an improved vulnerability (V) module and a m

Investigating the dynamics of volatile sulfur compound emission from primary systems at a water resource recovery facility.

This study quantifies volatile sulfur compound (VSC) emissions from primary settling tanks and investigates their mechanisms of generation. Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and methyl mercaptan (MM) concentrations in the off-gas were dominant among the VSCs analyzed, while dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) were under their odor threshold for most sampling dates. H2 S emission in primary settling tanks was mainly the result of the stripping of dissolved sulfide (64%) generated in the sewers. Results indicate that MM emission was more dependent on the conditions in the primary clarifie

Correlation between Legionella pneumophila serogroups isolated from patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia and water resources: a study of four hospitals in Tehran, Iran.

Legionella pneumophila (L. pneumophila) is one of the main pathogens, causing pneumonia and respiratory tract infections, especially in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). This study aimed to approve the hypothesis that the serogroup distribution of L. pneumophila isolates from patients is correlated with Legionella strains in the environment. A total of 280 bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples from VAP patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) as well as 116 water samples from different sources in four hospitals in Tehran, Iran, were evaluated for the presence of L.
