A common effort for both military and civil healthcare is to achieve knowledge-based health care in cold weather injuries and fatal accidents in harsh arctic environment. The Cold Weather Operations Conference in November 2021, having more than 300 participants from 20 countries, was addressing the prevention and treatment of injuries and trauma care in cold weather conditions and the challenges for military prehospital casualty care. The intention of the programme was to stimulate further research and systematic knowledge-based clinical work. The abstracts from the conference present cold wea

Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample and US weather data, we estimated the probability of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) being diagnosed as Legionnaires' disease (LD). LD risk increases when weather is warm and humid. With warm weather, we found a dose-response relationship between relative humidity and the odds for LD. When the mean temperature was 60°-80°F with high humidity (>80.0%), the odds for CAP being diagnosed with LD were 3.1 times higher than with lower levels of humidity (<50.0%). Thus, in some regions (e.g., the Southwest), LD is rarely the cause of hospitalizations. In other

Exercise in cold environments exerts a unique physiologic stress on the human body, which, under certain conditions, may result in a cold-related injury. Environmental factors are the most important risk factors for the development of hypothermia in athletes. Frostbite occurs as a result of direct cold injury to peripheral tissues. The biggest risk for frostbite is temperature. Trench foot is a result of repeated and constant immersion in cold water. Chilblains are local erythematous or cyanotic skin lesions that develop at ambient air temperatures of 32°F to 60°F after an exposure time of abo

A study of monthly mortality in Palermo by the Serfling's method showed a peak of excess deaths in winter 80-81 and two unexpected peaks in June-July 82 and July 83. Extramortality in the summer period could be attributed to hot weather, since in the two periods several consecutive days of high (greater than = 37 degrees C) maximum temperature were recorded. The possibility of summer temperatures monitoring for a public health action is discussed.

Thirst is not a very accurate measure of water need; optimal fluid replacement may lag 2 to 3 days behind actual needs, particularly for persons unaccustomed to a hot climate. If an older person begins an exercise program during warm weather or travels to a warmer climate, the intensity and duration of exercise should be restrained initially, then gradually increased over 10 to 14 days to allow for acclimatization.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever occurs primarily in the warm weather months of April through September in the southeastern and south central United States. It is transmitted by the bite of ticks infected with the etiologic Rickettsia. This article reviews the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and therapy of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Emphasis is placed on the dilemmas of early diagnosis and the necessity of early and often empirical antibiotic treatment of suspected cases.

BACKGROUND: The optimization of enhanced mineral weathering as a carbon dioxide removal technology requires a comprehensive understanding of what drives mineral weathering. These drivers can be abiotic and biotic and can interact with each other. Therefore, in this study, an extensive 8-week column experiment was set up to investigate 30 potential drivers of mineral weathering simultaneously.
METHODS: The setup included various combinations of rock types and surface areas, irrigation settings, biochar and organic amendments, along with various biota and biotic products such as earthworms, fun

OBJECTIVES: With contemporary, human-induced climate change at a crisis point, extreme weather events (e.g., cyclones, heatwaves, floods) are becoming more frequent, intense, and difficult to predict. These events can wreak rapid and significant changes on ecosystems; thus, it is imperative to understand how wildlife communities respond to these disruptions. Primates are perceived as being a largely adaptable order, but we often lack the quantitative data to rigorously assess how they are impacted by extreme environmental change. Leveraging detections from a long-term camera trap survey, this

Distributions of landslide size are hypothesized to reflect hillslope strength, and consequently weathering patterns. However, the association of weathering and critical zone architecture with mechanical strength properties of parent rock and soil are poorly-constrained. Here we use three-dimensional stability to analyze 7330 landslides in western Oregon to infer combinations of strength - friction angles and cohesion - through analysis of both failed and reconstructed landslide terrain. Under a range of conditions, our results demonstrate that the failure envelope that relates shear strength

It is important for the dermatopathologist to be adept in differentiating tissue artifacts from normal tissue variants and pathologies. Numerous tissue artifacts have been described to date; however, once we are familiar with the common artifacts that appear in our practice, we may not immediately recognize other confounders. For example, dermatopathologists in more temperate regions of the country may not be familiar with freezing artifact. In this case series, we present three common diagnoses in dermatopathology that were obscured by the extreme winter weather that severely impacted the Sou

HYPOTHESIS: Changes in the weather influence symptom severity in Ménière's disease (MD).
BACKGROUND: MD is an unpredictable condition that significantly impacts on quality of life. It is suggested that fluctuations in the weather, especially atmospheric pressure may influence the symptoms of MD. However, to date, limited research has investigated the impact of the weather on MD.
METHODS: In a longitudinal study, a mobile phone application collected data from 397 individuals (277 females and 120 males with an average age of 50 yr) from the UK reporting consultant-diagnosed MD. Daily symptoms

Local trends in ozone concentration may differ by meteorological conditions. Furthermore, the trends occurring at the extremes of the Ozone distribution are often not reported even though these may be very different than the trend observed at the mean or median and they may be more relevant to health outcomes. Classify days of observation over a 16-year period into broad categories that capture salient daily local weather characteristics. Determine the rate of change in mean and median O3 concentrations within these different categories to assess how concentration trends are impacted by daily

This research assesses how weather conditions, such as temperature and rainfall, affect the fragmentation of burnt bone. The recovery of human remains from fatal fire scenes is often hampered by the fragmentary nature of the material, and through understanding how weather factors affect this fragmentation, it may be possible to adjust recovery timelines and protocols to maximise the quantity and quality of condition of the material recovered. These data are also valuable as a baseline for expected fragmentation, and expected differences in fragmentation, under different weather conditions. Sus

Plants in association with soil microorganisms play an important role in mineral weathering. Studies have shown that plants in symbiosis with ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi have the potential to increase the uptake of mineral-derived nutrients. However, it is usually difficult to study many of the different factors that influence ectomycorrhizal weathering in a single experiment. In the present study, we carried out a pot experiment where Pinus patula seedlings were grown with or without ECM fungi in the presence of iron ore minerals. The ECM fungi used included Pisolithus tinctorius, Paxillus in

Physical weathering is usually responsible for the degradation of maxillofacial prosthetic elastomers and the replacement of prostheses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of outdoor weathering on the physical properties of four nonpigmented facial prosthetics after 1 year of exposure. In addition, simple mathematical models were developed to correlate the measured properties with irradiation time, including parameters with physical meaning. Three different medical-grade polydimethyl siloxanes (PDMSs) and an experimental chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) were examined in thi
