Distribution, characterization and chemical management of noxious shrub weed (Dichapetalum stuhlmannii Engl) in cashew in southeastern Tanzania.

Weeds are among the limiting factors that influence low production of economically important crops including cashew (Anacardium occidental L.). Shrub weeds attribute to inter-competition for resources, hinder harvesting and ultimately reduce cashew yields in Tanzania. The current study determined the distribution, characteristics and chemical control option of Dichapetalum Engl in Lindi and Mtwara regions, Southeastern Tanzania. The distribution study involved a survey for weed presence along the areas of Lindi and Mtwara regions. The characterization included distilling, and assessing the gro

Evolution of multiple resistance under long-term herbicide exposure reshapes Mediterranean perennial agroecosystems.

Decades of intensive herbicide use in perennial cropping systems have imposed substantial environmental pressures and accelerated the evolution of herbicide-resistant weed populations. In Andalusia (southern Spain), citrus and olive orchards rely heavily on glyphosate and other herbicide modes of action, resulting in chronic ecosystem exposure, declining herbicide efficacy, and increasing chemical inputs. We surveyed ten dominant weed species across eleven orchards to characterize resistance patterns and investigate underlying physiological mechanisms relevant to environmental persistence and

Influence of mowing on dynamics of native phytoseiid mites and Tetranychus urticae in apple orchards in northern Japan.

To support practical integrated pest management in commercial apple orchards, I investigated the influence of mowing on the occurrence of Tetranychus urticae and native phytoseiid mites in apple orchards sprayed with selective insecticides in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan, from 2013 to 2015. The orchards were not mown in 2013, and unmown and mown plots were compared in 2014 and 2015. There were significantly fewer Typhlodromus vulgaris on apple leaves and Amblyseius tsugawai in the undergrowth in mown plots than in unmown plots in both years. Conversely, there were significantly more T. urt

Design and synthesis of novel PPO-inhibiting pyrimidinedione derivatives safed towards cotton.

Developing innovative and effective herbicides is of utmost importance since weed management has become a worldwide agricultural production concern, resulting in severe economic losses every year. In this study, a series of new pyrimidinedione compounds were developed via combination of pyrimidinediones with N-phenylacetamide moiety. The herbicidal activity test (37.5-150 g of ai/ha) indicated that most of the new derivatives exhibited excellent herbicidal activity against dicotyledonous weeds, but less against grasses. Among them, compound 34 was identified as the best postemergence herbicida

RNAi spray-induced gene silencing of EPSPS by topical application of dsRNA in the weed Digitaria insularis.

The expanding cultivation of grains to meet agro-industry demands, the implementation of more efficient, sustainable, and integrative management practices capable of mitigating the selection of resistant pests and weeds becomes necessary. Due to the intensive application of chemical herbicides, in addition to environmental impacts, led to the development of resistance mechanisms in weed populations, such as sourgrass (Digitaria insularis). These mechanisms complicate management efforts, escalate production costs, and diminish productivity. In this context, RNA interference (RNAi) technology ha

TomatoweedDet: a real-field multi-class weed detection dataset and YOLO benchmark for tomato production systems.

This study presents an approach for the object detection of multiple weeds in tomato production systems based on deep learning. A comprehensive dataset has been collected in three provinces of Türkiye (Balıkesir, Ankara, and Aksaray) under real-world field conditions. The data set has 32,607 images and 44,165 bounding boxes annotations. The two weed species included in the dataset are, to our knowledge, underrepresented in the current deep learning-based agricultural object detection literature. Drone and smartphone cameras took pictures at different times of the day (morning, noon, and aftern

S-Aryl Butenolide Thioacetates as Strigolactone Agonists: Mechanism-Guided Design for Weed Management and Crop Growth Regulation.

Strigolactones (SLs) act as plant hormones regulating shoot architecture and as rhizospheric signals inducing parasitic weed germination. Herein, sulfur-containing SL agonists were designed and synthesized to explore their potential in weed management and crop growth regulation. A series of S-aryl butenolide thioacetates were prepared through a modular two-step synthetic route. Their biological activities were evaluated using Orobanche cumana seed germination assays, winter wheat tillering tests, and strawberry fruit development studies. Several compounds exhibited pronounced SL-like activity,

Con-specific neighbours may enhance compensation capacity in an invasive plant.

Facilitation, both by inter- and intra-specific neighbours, is known to be an important process in structuring plant communities. However, only a small number of experiments have been reported on facilitation in plant invasions, especially between invasive con-specific individuals. Here, we focus on how con-specific neighbours of the invasive alien plant alligator weed affect the tolerance of alligator weed to herbivory by the introduced biological control agent, Agasicles hygrophila. We conducted greenhouse and garden experiments in which invasive plant density and herbivory intensity (artifi

Genome-Guided Analysis of Seven Weed Species Reveals Conserved Sequence and Structural Features of Key Gene Targets for Herbicide Development.

Herbicides are commonly deployed as the front-line treatment to control infestations of weeds in native ecosystems and among crop plants in agriculture. However, the prevalence of herbicide resistance in many species is a major global challenge. The specificity and effectiveness of herbicides acting on diverse weed species are tightly linked to targeted proteins. The conservation and variance at these sites among different weed species remain largely unexplored. Using novel genome data in a genome-guided approach, 12 common herbicide-target genes and their coded proteins were identified from s

The history and current status of glyphosate.

Glyphosate is the only herbicide to target the enzyme 5-enolpyruvyl-3-shikimate phosphate synthase (EPSPS). It is a high use rate, non-selective herbicide that translocates primarily to metabolic sinks, killing meristematic tissues away from the application site. Its phloem-mobile properties and slow action in killing weeds allow the herbicide to move throughout the plant to kill all meristems, making it effective for perennial weed control. Since commercialization in 1974, its use has grown to dominate the herbicide market. Much of its use is on transgenic, glyphosate-resistant crops (GRCs),

Lignin-based nanoencapsulation for sustainable herbicide delivery: controlled release and bioactivity of 2,4-D and MCPA compared to commercial formulations.

Herbicides are the extensively used class of pesticides, which beside the active ingredient, in their formulation accompanying substances such as emulsifiers, surfactants and others is needed. The potential toxicity of these synthetic chemicals could pose serious risks to the human health, nontarget organism and environment. In this work we developed biodegradable lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) as environmentally friendly and controlled release carriers of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid 2,4-D and 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid MCPA. LNPs were synthesized via solvent-free nanoprecipitation, a

The effect of climate change on glyphosate control of Avena fatua, Brassica napus, and Echinochloa crus-galli.

Atmospheric CO2 concentrations and temperatures have significantly increased, accompanied by substantial changes in precipitation patterns. These changes are anticipated to intensify in the future. In Nordic regions, increasing temperatures can improve growing conditions for some crops by extending the growing season and expanding cultivation northward. Climate changes may also favour some weed species, potentially reducing crop yield and affecting herbicide efficacy. To assess glyphosate efficacy under future climate conditions, we conducted two dose-response experiments on barnyard grass (Ec

Effects of elevated CO2 and temperature on cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.) and its herbicide response.

BACKGROUND: Climate change, characterized by rising atmospheric CO2 and temperature fluctuations, significantly alters crop-weed interactions and weed management efficacy. This study evaluated the interactive effects of elevated CO2 (400, 600, 800, and 1000 ppm) and temperature regimes (26/16°C and 29/19°C) on the biomass accumulation of Xanthium strumarium and the efficacy of two herbicides with distinct modes of action: trifloxysulfuron-sodium (systemic, ALS inhibitor) and fluometuron (soil-active, PSII inhibitor). RESULTS: Elevated CO2 concentration up to 1000 ppm at the optimal temperatur

The inhibitory potential of green manure return on the germination and seedling growth of Eleusine indica L.

Trifolium repens L. (white clover) and Lolium perenne L. (ryegrass) are green manures widely used in conservation tillage systems worldwide. Eleusine indica L. (goosegrass) is a globally recognized noxious weed. Herein, we investigated the effects of aqueous extracts, decomposed liquids, and different straw-to-soil ratios on the germination and growth of goosegrass. The results showed that high concentrations (≥ 30%) of aqueous extracts or decomposed liquids of both green manures significantly inhibited germination-related parameters of goosegrass. The strongest inhibitory effect was observed

Pharmacophore-Oriented Discovery of Novel 1,2,3-Benzotriazine-4-one Derivatives as Potent 4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate Dioxygenase Inhibitors.

4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) is a functional protein existing in almost all aerobic organisms. In the field of agricultural chemicals, HPPD is acknowledged to be one of the crucial targets for herbicides at present due to its unique bio-function in plants. In the Auto Core Fragment in silico Screening (ACFIS) web server, a potential HPPD inhibitor featuring 1,2,3-benzotriazine-4-one was screened out via a pharmacophore-linked fragment virtual screening (PFVS) method. Molecular simulation studies drove the process of "hit-to-lead" optimization, and a family of 1,2,3-benzotriazine-

Design, synthesis and screening of herbicidal activity for new phenyl pyrazole-based protoporphyrinogen oxidase-inhibitors (PPO) overcoming resistance issues.

BACKGROUND: Whilst there are several methods to control weeds, which continuously plague farmers around the globe, the application of small molecular compounds is still the most effective technology to date. Plants can evolve to become resistant to PPO-inhibitors, a class of herbicides in commercial use since the 1960s. It is therefore essential to continuously develop new herbicides based on this mode-of-action with enhanced intrinsic activity, an improved resistance profile and favourable physicochemical properties. Based on an Amaranthus PPO crystal structure and subsequent modelling studie

YOLOv12-BDA: A Dynamic Multi-Scale Architecture for Small Weed Detection in Sesame Fields.

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the most important oilseed crops globally, valued for its high content of unsaturated fatty acids, proteins, and essential nutrients. However, weed infestation represents a major constraint on sesame productivity, competing for resources and releasing allelopathic compounds that can significantly reduce both yield and quality without timely control. To address the challenge of low detection accuracy in complex agricultural environments with dense weed distributions, this study proposes YOLOv12-BDA, a dynamic multi-scale architecture for small weed detectio

Discovery of Pyrazole-Benzimidazolin-2-One Derivatives as 4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate Dioxygenase Inhibitors.

4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) has become an attractive target for herbicide development owing to the slow development and low risk of resistance to its inhibitors. However, most available HPPD inhibitors exhibit limited crop selectivity and poor efficacy against grasses. Therefore, the exploration of novel molecular scaffolds is of great research value. In this study, we adopted a ring-fusion strategy to enhance π-π stacking interactions and developed a structurally novel pyrazole-4-chloro-benzimidazolin-2-one scaffold. Through systematic structural optimization, compound II-19 sh
