Pregestational body mass index, trimester-specific weight gain and total gestational weight gain: how do they influence perinatal outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between pre-gestational body mass index (BMI), total gestational weight gain (GWG), and/or trimester-specific weight gain (GWGT) with adverse maternal or perinatal outcomes (AMPOs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maternal clinical characteristics and pregnancy and perinatal outcomes were used to predict AMPOs. The predictive ability of BMI, GWG, or GWGT for AMPOs was analyzed using the area under the curve (AUC). Logistic regression models in a univariate and multivariate analysis were performed to estimate the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (C

A prospective analysis of optimal total weight gain ranges and trimester-specific weight gain rates for Chinese pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Gestational weight gain (GWG) criteria recommended by the Institute of Medicine may not be appropriate for Asians. Our aims are to investigate the association between GWG and adverse pregnancy outcomes, and to propose optimal total GWG and rates of GWG for Chinese women. METHODS: Prospective data of 51,125 mother-child pairs from 27 hospitals and community health care centers from Guizhou, Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in China between 2014 and 2018 were analyzed. Generalized Additive Models were performed to determine the associations of GWG with the risk of aggregated adverse out

Early weight gain after stopping smoking: a predictor of overall large weight gain? A single-site retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Most people gain weight on stopping smoking but the extent of weight gain varies greatly. Interventions aimed at all quitters to prevent weight gain on cessation have proven unpopular but targeting people who have gained excess weight immediately after quitting may improve uptake and cost-effectiveness. We examined whether early large postcessation weight gain predicts overall large weight gain. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Primary care setting-smoking cessation centre in Prague, Czech Republic. PARTICIPANTS: Out of 3537 patients treated between 2005 and 2013, 10

Weight gain after orthotopic liver transplantation: is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease cirrhosis a risk factor for greater weight gain?

Posttransplant weight gain is common after orthotopic liver transplantation. We sought to determine the extent of weight gain at 5 years after transplantation in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) cirrhosis versus patients with other types of cirrhosis (non-NAFLD). We studied 126 liver transplants performed between 2005 and 2007 at Saint Luc Hospital, University of Montreal. Seventeen of the 126 patients (13.5%) had NAFLD cirrhosis. Ascites volume was difficult to assess, so we used the body mass index (BMI) at 3 months as the reference BMI. All patients gained weight after

Early weaning is related to weight and rate of weight gain in infancy.

BACKGROUND: Evidence relating to the effect of early weaning on infant weight and weight gain is conflicting. The aim of this paper is to compare weight and weight gain in two groups of infants; one group weaned before 4 months (early weaned), the other weaned at 4 months or after. METHODS: Feeding practices were assessed through semistructured interviews with mothers of 1-year-old infants. Weight at birth, 8 weeks and 7 months were taken from an administrative database (Child Health System), and an additional measure of weight was taken at 14 months. RESULTS: Infants weaned early were heavi

Maternal weight gain during pregnancy and child weight at age 3 years.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the importance of pregnancy weight gain as a predictor of overweight (Body Mass Index [BMI] >85th percentile) in offspring at age 3 years and if its influence varies by maternal BMI. METHODS: Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were conducted on a sample of 208 mother-child pairs from an earlier observational cohort study on postpartum weight retention. RESULTS: In the final reduced regression model, maternal early pregnancy BMI was positively and significantly associated with overweight in offspring, as were birth weight above the sample median of 3,600 g an

Gestational weight gain and weight loss among women with gestational diabetes mellitus.

AIMS: To assess the association of gestational weight gain or loss with adverse pregnancy outcome among women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS: Retrospective study of all women diagnosed with GDM, from July 2012 to December 2016, stratified by gestational weight change according to the institute of medicine recommendations. Primary maternal outcome was glycemic control and primary neonatal outcome was large or small for gestational age (LGA or SGA). RESULTS: 451 women were enrolled. Total weight change was associated with poor glycemic control, cesarean delivery, polyhydramn

Maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain influence birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain have impact on pregnancy and birth weight, yet whether maternal gestational weight gain has a differential effect on the rates of adverse birth weight among women with different pre-pregnancy body mass index categories are unknown. METHODS: We selected 1617 children matched with their mothers as study subjects. The subjects were divided into three categories: weight gain below the American Institute of Medicine guidelines, weight gain within the American Institute of Medicine guidelines and weight gai

Maternal weight, gestational weight gain and preschool wheezing: the Generation R Study.

We studied the associations of maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain with risks of preschool wheezing in offspring and explored the role of growth, infectious and atopic mechanisms. This substudy of 4656 children was embedded in a population-based birth cohort. Information about maternal pre-pregnancy weight, gestational weight gain and wheezing at the ages of 1-4 years was obtained by either physical measurements or questionnaires. Among mothers with a history of asthma or atopy, maternal pre-pregnancy obesity was associated with an overall increased risk of presc

Long-term weight gain in children with craniopharyngioma.

OBJECTIVE: Adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma mainly affects children. Excessive weight gain is a major long-term complication. The primary objective of this study was to assess long-term weight changes in children treated for craniopharyngioma. The secondary objectives were to identify risk factors for excessive weight gain and to look for associations with hypothalamic damage by the tumour or treatment. DESIGN: Single-centre retrospective cohort study. METHOD: Children managed for craniopharyngioma at our centre between 1990 and 2019 were included. The body mass index (BMI) standard deviat

Gestational Weight Gain During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Healthy gestational weight gain (GWG) is associated with improved pregnancy and delivery outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic changed eating behaviours and physical activity, and thus may have impacted GWG. This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on GWG. METHODS: Participants (N = 371, 86% of the larger study) were part of a study focused on GWG among TRICARE beneficiaries (i.e., active-duty military personnel and other beneficiaries). Participants were randomized to two treatment groups (GWG intervention (n = 149 pre-COVID and n = 98 during COVID), and usual care con

Gestational weight gain charts for Latin American adolescents.

Monitoring gestational weight gain (GWG) throughout pregnancy among adolescents is important for detecting individuals at risk and timely intervention. However, there are no specific tools or guidelines for GWG monitoring of this group. We aimed to construct GWG charts for pregnant adolescents (10-19 years old) according to pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) using a pooled dataset from nine Latin American countries. Datasets from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay collected between 2003 and 2021 were combined after data cleaning and harmonization.

Gestational Weight Gain: Update on Outcomes and Interventions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gestational weight gain is a modifiable risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes. After the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released updated recommendations for gestational weight gain in 2009, a multitude of studies were released examining the recommendations, particularly for women with obesity. As the obesity epidemic continues, many physicians are interested in minimizing gestational weight gain for all women. Our aim was to review the evidence for the association of gestational weight gain and perinatal outcomes, particularly for weight gain outside the IOM guidelines. R
