Analysis of squat and stoop dynamic liftings: muscle forces and internal spinal loads.

Despite the well-recognized role of lifting in back injuries, the relative biomechanical merits of squat versus stoop lifting remain controversial. In vivo kinematics measurements and model studies are combined to estimate trunk muscle forces and internal spinal loads under dynamic squat and stoop lifts with and without load in hands. Measurements were performed on healthy subjects to collect segmental rotations during lifts needed as input data in subsequent model studies. The model accounted for nonlinear properties of the ligamentous spine, wrapping of thoracic extensor muscles to take curv

Task-specific pain-related fear influences lifting biomechanics differently in individuals with and without occupations involving repetitive lifting tasks.

Higher task-specific pain-related fear has been linked to restricted lumbar spine range of motion (ROM) during lightweight object lifting in chronic low back pain (LBP) patients and reduced lumbar spine flexion angles in healthy individuals, suggesting protective movement strategies. However, it remains unclear whether these findings apply to individuals who repetitively lift heavier objects at work. This study aimed to determine whether the effect of task-specific pain-related fear on lifting kinematics differs between individuals with (LIFTER) and without (NON-LIFTER) occupations involving r

Grip forces isolated from knowledge about object properties following a left parietal lesion.

When lifting two objects with equal weight but different size, we judge the smaller object to be heavier. This size-weight illusion has been intensively tested by the recruitment of fingertip grip forces during precision lifting. Previous findings have suggested that perceptual (object size) prediction can influence sensorimotor prediction (anticipatory grip force scaling to the object size) but these predictions could be processed independently. This study investigates whether the anticipatory scaling of the grip forces according to object properties critically depends on the integrity of the

A comparative study of methods for establishing load handling capabilities.

There has been much effort in recent years to quantify manual handling capabilities. Four main techniques have been used to this end; biomechanical modelling; the measurement of intra-abdominal pressure; psychophysics; and metabolic/physiological criteria. The aim of this study was to compare quantitatively the data produced from the first three techniques. The comparisons were limited to bimanual, sagittal plane lifting, which of all manual handling activities has been studied the most comprehensively, except that pushing and pulling data were compared from the psychophysics and intra-abdomin

Effect of instruction, surface stability, and load intensity on trunk muscle activity.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of verbal instruction, surface stability, and load intensity on trunk muscle activity levels during the free weight squat exercise. Twelve trained males performed a free weight squat under four conditions: (1) standing on stable ground lifting 50% of their 1-repetition maximum (RM), (2) standing on a BOSU balance trainer lifting 50% of their 1-RM, (3) standing on stable ground lifting 75% of their 1-RM, and (4) receiving verbal instructions to activate the trunk muscles followed by lifting 50% of their 1-RM. Surface EMG activity from muscles rectu

The Changes of Trunk Motion Rhythm and Spinal Loading During Trunk Flexion and Extension Motions Caused by Lumbar Muscle Fatigue.

Previous studies indicated that lumbar extensor muscle fatigue could potentially affect lumbar-pelvic rhythm and influence spinal loading during trunk motions. In this study, the effects of lumbar extensor muscle fatigue on the normalized lumbar-pelvic rotation rhythm and the associated L5/S1 joint loading during weight lifting and lowering tasks were investigated. Thirteen volunteers performed lifting and lowering of a 20-lbs box both before and after lumbar extensor muscle fatigue, which was generated through a static weight holding task. The normalized lumbar-pelvic motion ratio (L/P ratio)

The effect of isolating the paretic limb on weight-bearing distribution and EMG activity during squats in hemiplegic and healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Neural reorganization for movement therapy after a stroke is thought to be an important mechanism that facilitates motor recovery. However, there is a lack of evidence for the effectiveness of exercise programs in improving the lower limbs. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the immediate effect of isolating the paretic limb using different foot positions ((i) foot parallel; both feet parallel, (ii) foot asymmetry; paretic foot backward by 10 cm, and (iii) foot lifting; nonparetic foot lifting by normalization to 25% of knee height) on weight-bearing distribution and electromyography (EMG

The influence of external load configuration on trunk biomechanics and spinal loading during sudden loading.

Sudden loading is a major risk factor for work-related lower back injuries among occupations involving manual material handling (MMH). The current study explored the effects of external weight configuration on trunk biomechanics and trunk rotational stiffness in the sagittal plane during sudden loading. Fifteen asymptomatic volunteers experienced sudden loadings using the same magnitude of weight (9 kg) with two different configurations (medially- or laterally-distributed) at three levels of height (low, middle and high). Results of this study showed that the medially distributed weight result

A study of lifting tasks performed on laterally slanted ground surfaces.

Lifting in most industrial environments is performed on a smooth, level ground surface. There are, however, many outdoor work environments (e.g. agriculture and construction) that require manual material handling activities on variable grade ground surfaces. Quantifying the biomechanical response while lifting under these conditions may provide insight into the aetiology of lifting-related injury. The aim of the current study was to quantify the effect of laterally slanted ground surfaces on the biomechanical response. Ten subjects performed both isometric weight-holding tasks and dynamic lift

The effect on wear of lift-off in total knee arthroplasty.

Femoral lift-off has been reported in total knee arthroplasty using dynamic fluoroscopic analysis. However, the effect of femoral lift-off on ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is not clear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of lift-off movement on the wear of UHMWPE using a pin-on-disc testing machine. Using oxidised UHMWPE, delamination was observed in 70% of the discs with lift-off movement, as against none in without lift-off movement (p=0.0603). In non-oxidised UHMWPE the depth of the wear track was increased in the impact area after lift-off, but there

From Stoop to Squat: A Comprehensive Analysis of Lumbar Loading Among Different Lifting Styles.

Lifting up objects from the floor has been identified as a risk factor for low back pain, whereby a flexed spine during lifting is often associated with producing higher loads in the lumbar spine. Even though recent biomechanical studies challenge these assumptions, conclusive evidence is still lacking. This study therefore aimed at comparing lumbar loads among different lifting styles using a comprehensive state-of-the-art motion capture-driven musculoskeletal modeling approach. Thirty healthy pain-free individuals were enrolled in this study and asked to repetitively lift a 15 kg-box by appl

An Ergonomic Assessment of Hospital Linen Bag Handling.

The Joint Commission provides accreditation standards for staging hospital waste, but there are no federal lifting safety standards for linen bags. We evaluated hospital laundry bag lifting using the Revised National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lifting Equation. We hypothesized that the permitted 32-gallon linen container capacity might allow filling to weights above our calculated Recommended Weight Limit (RWL) for some lifting positions and contents. We found that 30- and 40-gallon bags filled with loose dry linen had predicted weights within estimated RWLs only for

Is it important to know the load mass in lifting tasks to prevent falls?

BACKGROUND: Lifting objects without knowing its weight may result in postural imbalances and be a risk factor for falls. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the load knowledge in postural balance when lifting different weight loads. METHODS: Thirteen male subjects (23.8 ± 3.1 years; 73.5 ± 7.8 kg; 179.1 ± 7.5 cm; foot length, 25.7 ± 1.2 cm) participated in the study. The effect of the weight overestimation on the postural stability was measured by the Index of Proximity to Stability Boundary (IPSB) and through the anterior-posterior and medio-lateral lengths disp

Effect of elbow flexion contractures on the ability of people with C5 and C6 tetraplegia to lift.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It is commonly assumed that minor elbow flexion contractures prevent people with C5-C6 tetraplegia and paralysis of the triceps brachii muscles from bearing full body weight through their upper limbs. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of simulated bilateral elbow flexion contractures on the ability of these individuals to bear weight through their upper limbs and to determine whether full passive elbow extension is truly critical for lifting body weight. METHOD: A biomechanical study was performed. Body weight lifted was measured under conditions

Return to Sport and Long-term Performance Levels in Weight Lifters Treated for Advanced Glenohumeral Arthritis With Inlay Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is challenging in weight lifters due to their relatively young age and desire for sport continuation. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to assess return to weight lifting and long-term outcomes after inlay-TSA (iTSA). It was hypothesized that iTSA would lead to high return to sport and performance. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: This study included weight lifters (<65 years of age) with advanced osteoarthritis (OA) treated with iTSA (2011-2023). Radiographic analysis established glenoid morphology (Walch classificat

Influences of the position of the head on posture while lifting.

In clinical training of some lower back pain patients, teaching them to control their lumbar lordosis during lifting may be difficult. Therefore, another effective method for lifting technique is required. In standing, head cannot move without some compensating postural adjustment. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of head position on lifting posture. Fourteen healthy male volunteers (22.6 +/- 4.4 years old) lifted a case while maintaining two different head positions; a downward position and an upright position. In the upright position, activities of the latissimus dorsi

Lack of predictive control in lifting series of virtual objects by individuals with diplegic cerebral palsy.

To date, research on the motor control of hand function in cerebral palsy has focused on children with hemiplegia, although many persons with diplegic cerebral palsy (dCP) have asymmetrically decreased hand function. We explored the predictive capabilities of the motor system in a simple motor task of lifting a series of virtual objects for five persons with spastic dCP and five age-matched controls. When a person lifts an object, s/he uses an expectation of the weight of the object to generate a motor command. We asked the study subjects to lift a series of increasing weights and determined w
