Head Start children's lifestyle behaviors, parental perceptions of weight, and body mass index.

This study examined lifestyle behaviors (food intake, active play, and screen time), parental perception of children's weight, and body mass index (BMI) of children enrolled in Head Start. Ninety-six parent-child dyads participated. Obesity prevalence (15.6%) was higher than the national average (10.4%); however, most parents (86.5%) of obese children did not perceive their children as obese. Regardless of BMI, food intake and active play levels generally did not meet recommended guidelines. Further, children who were less active were more likely to eat snacks (chi(2) = 6.24, p < or = .04). Th

The contributions of weight problem perception, BMI, gender, mood, and smoking status to binge eating among college students.

College student participants (N=1063; 77.8% response rate) completed a web-based survey assessing demographics, depression, anxiety, body image, cigarette smoking, and weight history. Among overweight participants, 42.6% of those who believed they were overweight admitted to binge eating, while only 30.1% who did not feel overweight did so (p<.05). Among non-overweight participants, 43.2% of those who believed they were overweight admitted to binge eating, while only 32.9% of those who did not feel overweight did so (p<.05). Weight Problem Perception (WPP) mediated the contribution of BMI on b

Self-Perception of Weight Status in Chinese Nurses and Its Influencing Factors: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

Misperceptions of weight status among nurses might distort expectations for weight control, leading to potentially misleading guidance. This study aimed to assess the agreement between self-perceived weight status and BMI-based classification among Chinese nurses, and to evaluate factors associated with perception bias. A convenience sample of 5786 registered nurses from 25 institutions was surveyed between May and September 2021. The mean BMI of nurses in this study was 21.59 ± 3.02 kg/m2, overweight and obesity accounted for 16.10% and 3.30%, respectively. The self-perceived overweight and o

What's Weight Got to Do With It? Mental Health Trainees' Perceptions of a Client With Anorexia Nervosa Symptoms.

This study examined the effect of client body mass index (BMI) on diagnostic impressions and perceptions of mental health trainees. Participants read a vignette of a mock female client presenting for treatment with symptoms of anorexia nervosa. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions in which the client was described as "underweight," "normal weight," or "overweight." Results revealed that participants assigned to the "underweight" condition diagnosed the client with anorexia nervosa or atypical anorexia nervosa more frequently than participants assigned to the "overweig

Perceptions of gestational weight gain in Turkish women: a qualitative study guided by a socio-ecological model.

BACKGROUND: Maternal body weight, nutrition, and lifestyle are critical indicators of both maternal and fetal health. Gestational weight gain (GWG) that deviates from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) guidelines is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Despite the rising prevalence of overweight and obesity among Turkish women of reproductive age, qualitative evidence regarding their GWG experiences remains limited. Using a qualitative approach guided by the Socio-Ecological Model (SEM), this study aimed to explore women’s perceptions, experiences, and behaviors regarding weight gain durin

Children with developmental dyslexia have equivalent audiovisual speech perception performance but their perceptual weights differ.

As reading is inherently a multisensory, audiovisual (AV) process where visual symbols (i.e., letters) are connected to speech sounds, the question has been raised whether individuals with reading difficulties, like children with developmental dyslexia (DD), have broader impairments in multisensory processing. This question has been posed before, yet it remains unanswered due to (a) the complexity and contentious etiology of DD along with (b) lack of consensus on developmentally appropriate AV processing tasks. We created an ecologically valid task for measuring multisensory AV processing by l

Pregnant women's perceptions of gestational weight gain: A systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative research.

Excess gestational weight gain has numerous negative health outcomes for women and children, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and cesarean section (maternal) and high birth weight, trauma at birth, and asphyxia (infants). Excess weight gain in pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of long-term obesity in both mothers and children. Despite a concerted public health effort, the proportion of pregnant women gaining weight in excess of national guidelines continues to increase. To understand this phenomenon and offer suggestions for improving interventions, we conducted a systematic r

Screen-based sedentary behavior and BMI among Chinese adolescents: weight concern as a mediator moderated by body image perception.

OBJECTIVE: Screen-based sedentary behavior (SB) is associated with elevated BMI; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigates the mediating role of weight concern in the SB-BMI relationship and examines how body image perception and gender moderate this mediation. By focusing on body image as a critical contextual factor, the study aims to inform targeted interventions for adolescent obesity and overweight. METHODS: In 2016, self-report questionnaires assessing screen-based SB, weight concern, and body image perception were collected from 508 Chinese ad

Association between weight perception and perceived stress among Korean adults from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Although several studies showed a correlation between weight perception and depression, the association between weight perception and perceived stress is unclear. This study explored this association using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with 37,022 participants. Participants were grouped based on how they perceived their body versus real body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference: accurate, underperception, or overperception. Stress was assessed through a questionnaire. The logistic regression analysis was performed, and odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interv

Perceptions of weight status and energy balance behaviors among patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Weight loss through behavioral modification is central to treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). To achieve this, patients need to accurately self-perceive their health behaviors. We aimed to identify predictors of concordance between self-perception and objective measures of body weight, physical activity (PA) and dietary behaviors. We used data from the Harris County NAFLD Cohort, an ongoing prospective study in a regional safety-net healthcare system. Patients completed self-administered baseline questionnaires on demographics, diet, PA, and self-perceptions. We assessed concor
