How much do universal anthropometric standards bias the global monitoring of obesity and undernutrition?

Each year, hundreds of articles in population health and nutrition, many in high-profile journals, use standard cutoffs based on weight and height as assessments of obesity and undernutrition. These global efforts to monitor overweight and underweight often rest on the assumption that ethnic differences in underlying body form are sufficiently small to permit universal anthropometric cutoffs for comparing excess and insufficient body fat across populations. However, a century of work in human biological variation suggests that human populations can vary dramatically in underlying body form in

Psychological Effects of Nasogastric Tube (NGT) in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa: A Systematic Review.

AIM: After the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for intensive nutritional care in patients affected with anorexia nervosa (AN) increased. The use of NGT was often used to overcome renutrition difficulties. This systematic review explores the evidence concerning the psychological effects of an enteral nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding on patients with AN. METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted on electronic databases, including papers from January 2010 to December 2023. The keywords used combined anorexia nervosa, NGT, nasogastric tube, and tube feeding, with MeSH terms

Transgender-related stigma and gender minority stress-related health disparities in Aotearoa New Zealand: hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes, and general health.

BACKGROUND: Research has found that transgender-related enacted stigma-including discrimination, harassment, violence, cyberbullying, community rejection, and conversion efforts-is associated with negative mental health among transgender people. Transgender people also experience physical health disparities that could be due to chronic gender minority stress caused by stigma and prejudice. METHODS: We compared a large New Zealand national survey of transgender participants with the New Zealand Health Survey (NZHS) with age and ethnicity weightings on stress-related health conditions and indic

Obesity: preventing and managing the global epidemic. Report of a WHO consultation.

Overweight and obesity represent a rapidly growing threat to the health of populations in an increasing number of countries. Indeed they are now so common that they are replacing more traditional problems such as undernutrition and infectious diseases as the most significant causes of ill-health. Obesity comorbidities include coronary heart disease, hypertension and stroke, certain types of cancer, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, gallbladder disease, dyslipidaemia, osteoarthritis and gout, and pulmonary diseases, including sleep apnoea. In addition, the obese suffer from social bias,

Nutrition and reproduction.

Adequate nutrition is essential for normal reproductive function in man. Menarche occurs at a critical level of 'fatness' and it appears that the hypothalamic events leading to pubertal development and the achievement of reproductive competence may be triggered by metabolic/endocrinological changes due to an increase in fat. The attainment and maintenance of ovulatory cycles demands a minimum degree of body fat (about 22%). Undernutrition results in weight loss and a reduction in fat tissue. This alteration in body composition in turn precipitates the hypothalamic changes that cause impaired g

Perceptions of obesity across the lifespan.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research on obesity stereotyping has almost extensively involved looking at the perceptions that 5-21-year-old individuals have toward members of their own age in-group. Very little research has examined how people perceive obesity across the lifespan. The current research begins to address this gap by examining the extent to which individuals between 18 and 77 years of age stereotype obesity in 20, 40, and 60-year-old targets. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A total of 106 male and 102 female white participants viewed nine standardized Adobe- cropped photos that depicted 20, 40,

Obesity surgery and the management of excess: exploring the body multiple.

Drawing on ethnographic data gathered through observations and interviews at a surgical weight management clinic in a large hospital, this article argues that while the core values governing the provision of obesity surgery (obesity = ill health; obesity surgery = weight loss; weight loss = improved health and cost savings) can be seen as governing the clinical encounter, the singularity of these collective equations reflects neither the complexity of the patient experience of obesity surgery nor the extent to which the 'war on obesity' itself does not adhere strictly to those principles. Draw

Implicit and explicit anti-fat bias: The role of weight-related attitudes and beliefs.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing prevalence of anti-fat bias in American society comes at a great cost to the health and well-being of people who are overweight or obese. A better understanding of the correlates of anti-fat bias would inform development of interventions for reducing anti-fat bias. Based on three theoretical perspectives, this study tested the relation between attitudes and beliefs about weight and anti-fat bias (implicit and explicit): (1) The belief that one is like people who are fat (social identity theory). (2) The belief that one can control her/his weight (attribution theory

Stressful life events, social health issues and low birthweight in an Australian population-based birth cohort: challenges and opportunities in antenatal care.

BACKGROUND: Investment in strategies to promote 'a healthy start to life' has been identified as having the greatest potential to reduce health inequalities across the life course. The aim of this study was to examine social determinants of low birthweight in an Australian population-based birth cohort and consider implications for health policy and health care systems. METHODS: Population-based survey distributed by hospitals and home birth practitioners to >8000 women six months after childbirth in two states of Australia. Participants were women who gave birth to a liveborn infant in Victo

Beyond Perceived Discrimination: Weight Discrimination in College Social Networks Is Associated With Poorer Mental and Behavioral Health.

BACKGROUND: Weight discrimination is associated with poorer health but has not been studied using social network analysis. This is surprising, as discrimination is a highly social phenomenon, and peer relationships are associated with health, discrimination, and behavior. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze relationships between freshman health and weight discrimination in college social networks during October through December 2021. DESIGN: This study used a cross-sectional design to analyze data from the Freshman Life and Student Health project. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Participa

[Stereotypical thinking about food in the context of promoting weight gain].

The aim of the study was to define the respondents' skills to assess certain food as the source of energy which can promote weight gain. Questionnaire survey was carried out in autumn 2006 among 149 women ranging in age from 26 to 53. In this study the participants rated the weight-enhancing characteristics of food that possesses positive health reputations along with food that is more disreputable in terms of wholesomeness. The respondents' rates were resulted from the knowledge of food, but also from stereotypical thinking about selected products (e.g. chocolate as high-calorie food, yoghurt

Perinatal outcomes in singleton live births after fresh blastocyst-stage embryo transfer: a retrospective analysis of 67 147 IVF/ICSI cycles.

STUDY QUESTION: Are perinatal outcomes different between singleton live births conceived from fresh blastocyst transfer and those following the transfer of fresh cleavage-stage embryos? SUMMARY ANSWER: Fresh blastocyst transfer does not increase risks of preterm birth (PTB), low/high birth weight or congenital anomaly and does not alter the sex ratio at birth or prejudice the chance of having a healthy baby. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Extended embryo culture is currently considered the best option for embryo selection, but concerns have been raised about increased risks of preterm delivery and l

Weight discrimination and cardiometabolic health in underrepresented US adults.

This study investigated the association between perceived weight discrimination and cardiometabolic health. A demographically diverse sample of 2632 US adults (36% Black/African American; 36% Hispanic/Latino; 29% sexual minority) completed a cross-sectional online survey. Linear regression was used to assess the association between perceived weight discrimination (assessed with the Stigmatizing Situations Survey-Brief) and cardiometabolic risk (indicated by the number of cardiometabolic conditions reported: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, or diabet

Early manifestations in a cohort of children prenatally diagnosed with 47,XYY. Role of multidisciplinary counseling for parental guidance and prevention of aggressive behavior.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of foetuses are recognized as having double Y because of the widespread use of prenatal screening using chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis. 47, XYY karyotype occurs in about one out of 1,000 newborn males, but it is not often detected unless it is diagnosed during prenatal testing. Despite the fact that unbiased follow-up studies demonstrate largely normal post-natal development of young men with 47, XYY, there is a scarcity of controlled studies about the neurological, cognitive and behavioural phenotype which remains the main reason for anxiety and a

[Epidemiological investigation on epilepsy in children of school age (author's transl)].

An epidemiological investigation was carried out in 1976-77 on all children attending the fourth year of primary education (9-10 years old) in Venice. The method of analysis was a questionnaire similar to that proposed by Rose (Epilepsy 1973) and by Meighan (Epilepsy 1976). Out of 1838, 1350 answered the questionnaire. The questionnaire synthesises various symptoms of epilepsy in 30 questions starting from the most severe ones. In a second phase the answers were divided into 8 groups: the hypothesis was that the percentage of children with epilepsy in groups 1-3 (high probability to have epile

Controlled, double-blind, multicenter clinical trial of iron protein succinylate in the treatment of iron deficiency in children.

A total of 502 children up to the age of 14 years were treated for iron deficiency or overt anemia. ITF 282 was prescribed to 256 children, and a commercially available ferrous polystyrene sulphonate preparation to 246, in a randomized double-blind, double-dummy, ten-center trial. One oral vial of ITF 282 (60 mg iron) was administered once a day to children weighing up to 40 kg; and twice a day to children with body weight equal or superior to 40 kg. In the reference group, oral vials of polystyrene sulphonate (52.5 mg iron) were administered once a day to children weighing up to 40 kg, and tw

Race, Gender, and Primary Language Were Not Associated With Changes in Opioid Prescribing in Children: Results From a Single Institution, 2010 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Patients should be prescribed medication based on their medical condition, without prejudice because of their race, gender, or primary language. However, previous research has shown that men are prescribed more medication than women, patients who are White are prescribed more medications than patients who are non-White, and English-speaking people are prescribed more medications than non-English-speaking patients. However, it is unclear whether these differences also occur in pediatric orthopaedic populations. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked: (1) Was the amount of opiates prescribed

Video Teaching Leads to Improved Attitudes Towards Obesity-a Randomized Study with 949 Participants.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a rising social and economic burden. Patients with obesity often suffer from stigmatization and discrimination. Underrecognition of obesity as a disease could be a contributing factor. The present study aimed to compare attitudes towards obesity with other chronic diseases and to evaluate the recognition of need of professional treatment. METHODS: Nine hundred and forty-nine participants (subgroups: general population, patients with obesity, nurses in training, nurses, medical students, physicians) were randomized to video teaching on obesity and control. Access to physical health care for people with serious mental illness: a nursing perspective and a human rights perspective-common ground?

Relative to the general population, people with serious mental illness (SMI) experience elevated risks of physical disease and illness and live shorter lives. A human rights perspective argues that people with serious mental illness have a right to equal access to physical health care. Nurses in mental health services can contribute to improving the availability and accessibility of physical health care. This study, involving focus group interviews with nurses in a large regional and rural mental health care district of Queensland, Australia, revealed significant problems in access to physical

A Study of Anti-Fat Bias among Danish General Practitioners and Whether This Bias and General Practitioners' Lifestyle Can Affect Treatment of Tension Headache in Patients with Obesity.

OBJECTIVES: The study investigated whether treatment options for episodic tension-type headache vary among general practitioners (GPs) in Denmark depending on the patients' weight status and gender, and whether these decisions can be explained by the GPs' own anti-fat bias and lifestyle. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire study with responses from 240 GPs on measures of anti-fat bias, healthiness of GPs' lifestyles, and reported patient treatment decisions. RESULTS: GPs tended to exhibit negative explicit and implicit anti-fat bias. There were no differences in choice of medical treatm
