Modern sockets for lower limb amputees utilize total contact and distribute some weight on the stump end. Its tolerance to bear weight varies but is better after joint disarticulation, however, systematic measures have been missing. Different levels, indications, shapes etc. were analysed with 102 measurements in 69 patients. The maximal-end-weight-bearing of the stump measured on a scale was much lower after transmedullar amputations than after disarticulations. Men had a mean tolerance more than 15 kg but women less than 10 kg. There was a positive correlation to body weight. Diabetics toler

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to explore the changes in ground reaction force (GRF) produced by custom-made weight-bearing and nonweight-bearing foot orthoses and by a prefabricated foot orthosis, in the control of the pronated foot.
METHODS: Thirty-nine participants were recruited. All were in good health, aged 18 to 25 years, and presented pronated foot. Three different types of foot orthosis were studied: prefabricated, weight-bearing, and nonweight-bearing.
RESULTS: No significant differences were observed in the phases of the gait cycle between the prefabricated, the weight-beari

INTRODUCTION: Lower extremity fractures are common orthopaedic injuries and often require surgical intervention, which has been shown to significantly impact both the physical recovery and psychological well-being of patients. Given the high prevalence of psychiatric disorders following lower extremity injuries, understanding the relationship between postoperative weight bearing restrictions and psychiatric outcomes is important for improving patient recovery. It was hypothesized that patients with lower extremity fractures who were allowed early weight bearing postoperatively would have lower

This study compares two methods for evaluating pain-related behavior in an animal model with carrageenan-induced monoarthritis. Rats injected with lambda-carrageenan into the right tibio-tarsal joint were videofilmed at various times after injection and later scored regarding their stance. Immediately after each videorecording session the animals were tested in a box constructed to register the weight load exerted by the hindpaws by means of force plates inserted in the floor. Following carrageenan injection (300 micrograms in 50 microL) the load on the injected paw fell from a control value o

Whether for functional or cosmetic reasons in oncologic patients, following amputation or severe crush injuries of the lower limbs with complete severance of vessels and nerves, microsurgery enables a weight-bearing lower limb or femoral stump to be created if such a result cannot be achieved by transplanting plantar skin with an intact vessel-nerve bundle. When first fitting a prosthesis in a patient with a weight-bearing lower leg stump created by autologous grafting of plantar skin employing the microsurgical method, it is advisable initially to partially relieve the grafted covering tissue

BACKGROUND: After ankle arthrodesis (AA), a postoperative non-weight-bearing period is generally required. A patellar tendon-bearing (PTB) brace allows ambulation while reducing load transmission to the ankle joint; however, its role in supporting early postoperative weight-bearing (within 6 weeks) after AA remains unclear.
PURPOSE: To determine whether early weight-bearing after AA using a PTB brace is feasible in patients with end-stage ankle osteoarthritis by comparing clinical outcomes and bone union between 6-week and 8-week non-weight-bearing protocols.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the author's personal experiences in using the Patella Tendon Bearing Cast (P.T.B.) as described by Sarmiento (6), in the management of tibial shaft fractures. In all patients weight-bearing was instituted in a P.T.B. cast 4 weeks from the date of the fracture. The results obtained were compared with those of conventional methods used in the treatment of tibial shaft fractures. Analysis revealed that when the P.T.B. cast was used for treatment of tibial shaft fractures, the time taken for fracture healing was significantly reduced and the functional res

BACKGROUND: Ankle arthrodesis is a standard surgical treatment for end-stage ankle arthritis. The optimal timing of postoperative weight-bearing remains controversial, as traditional protocols recommend prolonged non-weight-bearing. Early weight-bearing may improve functional recovery without compromising fusion. This study aimed to evaluate radiographic union and clinical outcomes following early weight-bearing after open ankle arthrodesis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 20 patients with end-stage ankle osteoarthritis who underwent open ankle arthrodesis between

The neuropathic compression of the tibial nerve and/or its branches on the medial side of the ankle is called tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). Patients with TTS presents pain, paresthesia, hypoesthesia, hyperesthesia, muscle cramps or numbness which affects the sole of the foot, the heel, or both. The clinical diagnosis is challenging because of the fairly non-specific and several symptomatology. We demonstrate a case of TTS caused by medial dislocation of the talar bone on the calcaneus bone impacting the tibial nerve diagnosed only by ultrasound with the patient in the standing position.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to present and evaluate methods of measuring toe joint angels using joint-surface based and inertial axes approaches.
METHODS: Nine scans of one frozen human cadaveric foot were obtained using weight-bearing CT. Two observers independently segmented bones in the forefoot and measured metatarsalphalangeal joint (MTPJ) angles, proximal and distal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ and DIPJ) angles and interphalangeal angles of the hallux (IPJ) using 1) inertial axes, representing the long anatomical axes, of the bones and 2) axes determined using centroids of arti

The incidence of distal femur fractures increases in the geriatric patient. The primary treatment goal in these fractures is early mobilisation to prevent secondary injuries associated with immobility. In light of the increasing spectrum of therapeutic options for postoperative fracture treatment, including double plating, nail-plate combination and distal femur replacement as postoperative treatments, weight-bearing recommendations are becoming increasingly important. The aim of this study was thus to analyse the weight-bearing recommendations and associated therapy results within the literat

PURPOSE: The fixation of comminuted distal radius fractures using wrist-spanning dorsal bridge plates has been shown to have good postoperative results. We hypothesized that using a stiffer bridge plate construct results in less fracture deformation with loads required for immediate crutch weight bearing.
METHODS: We created a comminuted, extra-articular fracture in 7 cadaveric radii, which were fixed using dorsal bridge plates. The specimens were positioned to simulate crutch/walker weight bearing and axially loaded to failure. The axial load and mode of failure were measured using 2- and 5-

In syndesmosis injury, whether the syndesmosis screw should be removed prior to weight-bearing remains controversial. The aim of this study was to compare the functional outcome between removed screw and retained groups and between recurrence of diastasis and no diastasis groups.Fifty-six patients who had undergone open reduction and internal fixation due to syndesmosis injury were retrospectively evaluated and divided into four groups: (A) removed syndesmotic screw before weight-bearing (postoperative 3 months, n = 28), (B)retained (n = 28), (C) recurrence of diastasis (n = 9), and (D) no dia

Ankle fractures are common orthopedic injuries. Although operative indications and subsequent stabilization of these fractures have not significantly changed, postoperative protocols remain highly variable. Effects of early weight bearing (EWB) on fracture characteristics in operatively stabilized bimalleolar and bimalleolar equivalent ankle fractures remain poorly publicized. This study seeks to clarify postoperative fracture union rates, rates of hardware loosening or failure, and radiographic medial clear space changes when comparing EWB to late weight bearing (LWB) following open reduction
