Weil's Disease with Multi-Organ Dysfunction: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by spirochetes from the species Leptospira Weil's disease, the more severe manifestation of leptospirosis, is characterized by a combination of jaundice, renal injury, and hemorrhages. Diagnosing severe leptospirosis in patients with acute life-threatening multi-organ dysfunction at presentation can be challenging because of the non-specific clinical manifestations. This report describes a case of severe leptospirosis with jaundice, acute renal dysfunction, severe thrombocytopenia, pulmonary hemorrhage, and unusual manifestations, including rhabdomyol

A case of Weil's disease presenting as Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Leptospirosis presents in a biphasic manner: an early leptospiraemic phase and a late immune phase. In its severe form, it presents with multi-organ failure, also known as Weil's disease. Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is an autoimmune hypersensitive reaction leading to diffuse fluid filled vesicle formation with detachment of skin and mucous membrane. Though SJS is triggered by different infections and drugs, its association with leptospirosis is not frequently reported. Here we present such a case.

Leptospirosis-induced purpura: An atypical manifestation of Weil's disease.

Purpura is a rare but documented presenting feature of severe leptospirosis. We describe a case of Weil's disease characterized by predominating coagulopathy and hepato-nephritis. We illustrate dynamic changes in cutaneous lesions.

Weil's disease with haemoptysis and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

A 35-year-old male patient reached the emergency department after an episode of massive haemoptysis a few hours ago. Fever and dyspnea were mentioned to be present the last 5 days. His medical history included only malaria, successfully treated 2 years ago. Clinical examination revealed high fever, jaundice, cyanosis, tachypnea and bilateral rales on pulmonary auscultation. Laboratory investigation showed high erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C reactive protein, leucocytosis, anaemia, mild thrombocytopaenia, renal impairment, hyperbilirubinaemia and abnormal liver function tests; arterial bl

Weil's Disease from a Local New Orleans Bar.

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infection that typically presents with fever, myalgias, nausea, and vomiting after contact with contaminated waters or infected animals (typically rodents); and their excrements. Conditions favorable to the transmission of leptospirosis are common in LA and, without treatment, leptospirosis can lead to both liver and renal failure, meningitis, pulmonary hemorrhage and ultimately death. CASE: A 56 year old woman with no past medical history presented to the Emergency Department with weakness, myalgias, jaundice and decreased urine output for one week.

Discovery of the causative organism of Weil's disease: historical view.

On January 20, 1915, Inada and Ido announced the discovery of the causative agent of Weil's disease. Subsequently, on February 13, 1915, they published the first paper on the discovery of the causative organism (a new species of Spirochaeta) of Weil's disease. Besides discovering the causative organism of the disease, Inada and colleagues clarified the pure culture in medium, and determined the source and route of the infection, its pathology and morbid anatomy; the distribution of the organism in various organs and tissues; the excretion of the spirochete, and its division, filterability, and

Cotton-wool spots as a sign in leptospirosis (Weil's disease).

A 44-year-old black male presented with fever, myalgia and weakness. He had elevated blood urea nitrogen, creatine phosphokinase and serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase. During the first 6 days of this undiagnosed illness azotemia increased, a pericardial friction rub occurred, and hematuria was present. On the 7th day bilateral subconjunctival hemorrhages, anterior uveitis, and peripapillary cotton-wool spots were noted. This combination of findings suggested leptospirosis, which was subsequently confirmed by specific antibody titers. Therapeutic response was achieved with high-dose syste
